With this opening do you see Gintama crossing New Interpretation movie Corpse? Seems difficult with the current situation.

Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (01/08-09); Charts Update
No, no. That was never a target or anything. It will be aiming for ¥2 billion, which would be great.
The first Gintama animated movie grossed ¥1.07 billion. The Final earned half of that just over its first four days, and could end up grossing close to double. It didn't match the openings of the two live-action films, nor will it outgross them, but they were given a much wide release and the live-action novelty helped them out.
The opening might look average, but it's pretty impressive. Shonen (or Weekly Shonen Jump in particular) films tend to only appeal to the fanbase of the same manga/anime series, and hardly anyone else, so they have a limited audience that will turn out. As far as all the animated WSJ films go, this opening is good, and either on par with or better than a lot of other more popular series'.
I'll work on a Weekly Shonen Jump Box Office History list at some point this week. I'll begin it by ONLY including the animated films based on WSJ titles, and then expand it or either add a separate live-action section afterwards.

You're totally right, I posted this a few weeks ago : Peak weekly sales for a volume #01 during an anime run (link : https://tieba.baidu.com/p/7166908063?pi ... 7189204320) 01. The promised neverland #01 : 19 509 Technically, this isn't an anime run but we can add : - Chainsaw-man #01 which sold 33 124 this last week. - Spy×Family #01 which sold 28 287 this last week. The two biggest weekly boost in Oricon's history are running together, and now, we even have some manga without anime having boosts on par with the best anime runs. For the biggest yearly sales boost, excluding Demon Slayer, the record to beat is Attack on Titan #01 which sold almost 1 300 000 in 2013, the year season #01 aired. And now Jujutsu Kaisen has exceeded 20 million copies in circulation. Just announced today by Shueisha, so expect a huge week in sales for the series with Vol. 14's debut (really curious on this one) and the backlog likely being restocked again. Here is its reported circulation number timeline: 600,000 - Dec. 2018 1.1 million - Feb. 2019 2.0 million - June 2019 2.5 million - Nov. 2019 4.5 million - May 2020 6.8 million - Sept. 2020 10.0 million - Oct. 2020 15.0 million - Dec. 2020 20.0 million - Jan. 2021 This is a major exponential increase in sales. Over 15 million in just 8 months (May 2020-Jan. 2021), and 13.2 million in just 4 months (Sept. 2020-Jan. 2021). And a 5 million month (Dec. 2020-Jan. 2021) might only be the second time a manga has achieved this since Oricon's sales chart began. Unless One Piece achieved some 5 million months back in 2009-2012, Demon Slayer is the only other series to have achieved this feat to my knowledge. It's very reminiscent of what started to happen with Demon Slayer in late-2019.

Well, while at least Gintama is in peace here, in other sites, mostly MAL, it's a war zone right now lmao I still have hope that Gintama will cross more than that *thinking positive*

Jujutsu Kaisen sold 671,651 units last week. Considering there is only one other volume on top of volume 14 in the Shoseki top 500 (vol. 13 at #443), most of these sales probably belong to the newly released volume 14. Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (01/08-09); Charts Update
Shueisha is struggling with the reprints a lot lately. And in Jujutsu's case, doesn't seem they were able to give Vol. 14 a significant first print run (crazy that it's moved 5 million in a month despite this).
But this is good news, as it's an indication of strong sales for the industry.

Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (01/08-09); Charts Update
The State of Emergency is going to expand to 7 more prefectures, so more theaters will be closing early at 8PM each day while also resuming 50% capacity. The 50% capacity isn't much of a concern for the box office, but the last showings beginning at 5/6PM in order to finish before 8PM will continue to deflate the numbers while in effect since students and working people don't really have a chance to go during the weekdays with this measure.
The measures are currently in place until Feb. 7th.

Yeah I've read that the Midnight premiere of Evangelion was cancelled.
Let's hope that even with the 50% capacity the movie can perform well. Last year From Today, It's My Turn!! proved it is possible after all.

Yeah. The 50% capacity isn't much of a negative factor. Lots of films last Summer did perfectly well with it in effect.
It's the 8PM early closing that's the issue since it eliminates all showings after 6PM. Evangelion's midnights were canceled due to this, as you mentioned. I don't think they're going to delay the film, but I would understand if they do. It's one of those rare films in the market that's dependent on the first day or two worth of business. And most of its audience would normally come out in the evening and night, but they won't be able to do that now. We'll see. If it's delayed, it shouldn't be very long this time.

I don't think any product in the near future (like Jujutsu Kaisen) will surpass Demon Slayer.
But in box office business, never say never. There might be a new pandemic that let Jujutsu Kaisen the movie be the only movie in the cinema for a whole year.

Honestly, hoping for a new pandemic just for a new movie to surpass the new number 1 is pretty mess up lmao And for that to happen, that's basically hoping for another pandemic in 3-5 years range which sucks for a lot of people xD

JjK has sold 12M~ right now I guess and with the reprint will sell millions of copies for the next weeks ! I wonder if it can becomes the second best seller in term of ratio copies/volume... now that One Piece is more like 2M/volume. For 2021 Kimetsu should stay at the top but for 2022 the "battle" will be very exciting. ^^ But seriously... KnY is just a incredible ! Manga, movie, light novel, music... It was in all top and mostly at the 1st rank. Still curious about video-games now. Edit : JjK #14 sold 637 000 copies. And here the start of each volumes... sources : https://biz-m.oricon.co.jp/article/1233/ and @manganiMY on Twitter

There are lots of factors (external and internal) contributing in the movie box office success tho, pandemic alone can make more people stay at home rather than go to cinema.

Is KnY game gonna be gacha based? Since popular titles like FGO, AK, AL, PCRD, GI, HI3, etch. are all popular because they are gacha. And being a gacha, they can milk out more money from their fans lol

That decision is because of the restrictions. This series is heavily dependent on opening day audience and specially evening shows.

Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Actuals (01/08-09); Charts Update
It's the best decision. I haven't read of any others films being delayed between now and Feb. 7th (restrictions in place until then, currently), but Evangelion is just one of those films that will be too negatively impacted by theaters closing at 8PM in the busiest prefectures.
And assuming the restrictions are lifted on Feb. 7th, I expect they'll announce the new date for early Spring, possibly as early as mid/late-February, not several months away or anything.
But this movie is certainly going down in history as one of the unluckiest productions of all time. Remember, it was supposed to come out a year after 3.0, meaning a 2012 release date was originally planned. Then that was scrapped, and it's had various release frames (even landing actual dates over the past year) over the last 9 years.
