Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Forecast (12/26-27)
So after MANY years, a long-standing and often thought impossible to break record fell today. ...Oh yes! Toho is nearing a monopoly on the Top 10, and will have the Top 6 films this weekend. This is the first time a single distributor has had six of their films occupy the Top 6 spots in the Top 10. Thanks to everyone who joined over the past couple of months, partaking in the discussions and everything, so we can all witness this monumental accomplishment together. KIDDING! Sort of. Toho is achieving a major accomplishment mentioned above.
But Demon Slayer has surpassed Spirited Away, and is now the new #1 film of all-time! I'm waiting until the day officially concludes to update everything, so stay tuned.

Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Forecast (12/26-27)
About the news about DS surpassed SA to become new no.1, some foreign butthurts on the internet said it did that only bacause kids nowadays love watching good animation visual stuffs. Lol, they really didnt know what is going on in Japan now or how much impact/influence the movie did on the society by saying only "kids watched it for good animation stuffs".

There will always be defenders on both sides so that's pretty standard whole on internet. I personally love One Piece more than DS BUT to enjoy a box office phenomenon and it's run has its own fun and pleasure abd the fact is that DS won it fair and square so it does not matter how or why it did so much.

Thanks Corpse for running such an amazing thread and specifically for those patient and detailed responses. I know it's tiring and frustrating at times but I'm sure you had the most fun out of this thread in years

Though it kinda reminds me of Avengers Endgame where it debut $109 million more than Force Awakens, yet it failed to be top domestic film, let along breaking one billion domestic barrier which everyone think will be easy around the opening week. Was Endgame's second weekend 35% higher than The Force Awakens' opening weekend? Or was its 10-day total 119% higher than the previous 10-day record? Not a fair comparison due to the markets being much different, but equivocally speaking, Demon Slayer just earned a second weekend of $347 million and is up to $1.18 billion (+119% versus The Force Awakens' 10-day total) after 10-days in comparison. That look like a challenge which I'll gladly accept! I'll be team Spirited Away>Demon Slayer, but since the odd is against me, Demon Slayer has to win in both money and admissions. Corpse wrote: Sounds good. And I'll finally get to post a Showdown with Spirited Away for the first time ever. I've included it in some showdowns in the past including multiple films, and only just for fun as the target film was mostly competing against something else. 2 months later, look like I lost a bet. I was so sure there'll be a significant rise in coronavirus case that big enough to trigger a cinema lockdown as I plan to add another condition to the bet that'll benefit me like first run vs first run. Turns out that the coronavirus rises much higher than I thought, almost 4,000 daily nationwide, almost 1,000 daily in Tokyo alone. But it didn't trigger any lockdown, or even trigger anything under the new Prime Minister administration.

Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Forecast (12/26-27)
It's all fun in the end.
And there have been measures taken against restaurants, bars, and such (and the Government is assisting all of them with lost revenue), and the Travel Program has been restricted now, but theaters are going to be immune unless it gets REALLY out of hand. Theaters have yet to have any clusters reported, and continue to be a relatively safe activity for people. That could change if things would continue to get out of hand, but measures would occur (such as resuming 50% capacity) before any actual lockdown.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Becomes New #1 All-Time!!
Also, aside from Wonder Woman 1984 and Kamen Rider continuing to under-perform, the rest of the Top 10 performed well on Saturday, too.
Pokemon more or less performing as expected (similar to the Doraemon films this year). There's just a limit on how much younger-skewing films can earn at the moment (especially in one day) from cautious families, so it's good enough since legs should be solid as family films have been extra-leggy this year. Poupelle of Chimney Town came in below its Friday take, which is really rare, but its Friday was also unusually strong in my opinion, so need to wait and see how Sunday behaves. (Thanks for telling me about this movie, ultimatemegax.) Three Kingdoms holding solid as expected. Promised Neverland managing a solid 40% drop or so. This is a good result as a lot of live-action Shonen adaptations can drop-off rather quickly. Stand By Me, Doraemon 2 perhaps holding better than expected.
Great weekend to begin the holiday period, that's for sure.

Is there a list of the box office box office grossing films of the Japanese box office, adjusted for inflation?

Knifer775 wrote: Is there a list of the box office box office grossing films of the Japanese box office, adjusted for inflation? No, there hasn't really been any (or much) inflation in the market since the early 1990s. Ticket prices are only 4-5% higher in 2020 than they were back in 1993. The last 27 years at the box office can be compared with almost no need to adjust for anything, especially 1993-2014. Japan is very stagnant. Welcome to the forum, by the way. I think I missed welcoming you.

It always feels a little weird seeing charts like this get a new #1 after so long of seeing the same thing.
Only question now is how high it'll go. I believe it has enough left to get to the 40 billion mark at this point.

Thank you for all your work, Corpse and everyone else, the number of pages in this thread got quite a boost too^^. It's weird to think the run isn't over yet, now, I'm looking forwards the following weeks, I'm on the 40 billion mark train too.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Becomes New #1 All-Time!!
I went back and reviewed 2015 (last year that Christmas and New Year were on a Friday) to get some of idea of how everything will perform this upcoming week.
I've said many times that New Year Week (first week of January) will be stronger than Christmas Week (last week of December), but I don't think that'll be the case this time. It is in every other scenario, EXCEPT for when Christmas and New Year land on Fridays (like in 2015).
Instead, this Christmas Week is likely to be exceptionally stronger than normal, meaning the upcoming weekdays are going to be huge. Very huge. ymblcza reported that Monday reservations are ~75% of Sunday's, which is evidence that the week is going to be huge. Pretty much everything back in 2015 either doubled or tripled their weekend (Dec. 26-27) gross over the weekdays (Dec. 28-01/01). Demon Slayer is unlikely to do this since it's increasing over 100% this weekend (...), but it'll probably at least match this weekend's gross over the weekdays, and likely come in a bit higher. But everything else looks likely to double/triple this weekend's gross.
The first week of January in 2016 (01/04-08), except for that Monday, saw big drop-offs since the holidays had ended, but unlike 2016, 2021's New Year week has been extended until Jan. 11th to avoid travel congestion. So that week, two weeks away, will still be strong, definitely stronger than 2015 (or 2016, technically), but will still likely see everything dropping versus this upcoming week.

Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Becomes New #1 All-Time!!
Thanks for the good job Corpse. "Les records sont faits pour être battus" Demon slayer is really a social phenomenon... Your posts about all the records from the movie are veerrrryyy loooong (and without the records from the manga). Just a little sad that two of my favourite movies (Spirited Away and Your Name) are both one place behind than before But Demon Slayer is on my "plan to watch" list! I guess I have time to see the first season before the movie will be on screens in France (Theaters are still close in France but the movie has a french release planned).
