Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
Looking at the 2pm update, Violet Evergarden is the only wide release included in the Top 25. This tells me that the program is only counting the mini theater system (filled with a bunch of very small films in very limited release) right now, excluding ALL other chains. Japan releases so many films, there's a mini theater system in place to play them.

I haven't seen this happen before, so it'll be interesting to see how, or even IF, it gets corrected later today. I'm about to turn in, so IF it gets corrected before I'm back on, just remember this:

-Stand By Me, Doraemon 2 is underperforming, and pretty badly. Again, it's a weekday Friday, it's not expected to do very well today because of its target audience. Unless it's a truly awful number, it could still recover some over the weekend frame. There are many reasons for an underperformance, if it does happen, but I'll wait to go over them until later in case it recovers.

Jokes aside, it seems they're starting to apply corrections so it may be fixed by the end of the day.

The Blog finished correction and those Doraemon numbers are bad, it is weird how this team managed an incredible success with the first Stand by me movie but their projects after that(Lupin and Dragon Quest) had a disappointing results.

Kimetsu is still holding great 22% drop.

Back just in time I see. :P

Yes, bad first day for Stand By Me, Doraemon 2. Again though, it wasn't suppose to do well today (off-season weekday), but this is below what was expected to be an already lower result. Can it recover over the weekend? Perhaps, but even a significant jump over the next three days (which is likely to happen for it) can't really get it to a satisfactory level. I want to wait until Saturday is over before going into detail for its underperformance.

And Demon Slayer is indeed holding very well again. Easy #1 today, and it's going to easily remain #1 over the weekend frame. It's still going to experience a large (~35/40% probably) Saturday drop versus last week, which I've explained why, but the expected strong Sunday (probably matching its weekday drops of 15/20% or so) will give it a strong weekend.

Thanks for the weekly update! Broke 80 million physical copies for the year. And with digital, it must be pretty close to/over 100 million for the year alone.

Volume 23's first-print run almost needs to be 4.5 million, minimum, I feel. But I wonder if the immediate second-print run a week later is because they couldn't physically produce more than ~4 million for the first week.

Can't wait to see Shueisha's announcment on the lifetime circulation figure here soon either. Over 100 million back in September. I feel like it must be over 120 million, or 130 million+ by now.

Quick COVID update: Cases the last three days have been pretty consistent above 2,000 (~500 in Tokyo), the three biggest single-days on record, but the meetings on Thursday and Friday didn't result in the government requesting any restrictions of any kind on any businesses. And they also still plan to promote their Go To domestic tourism campaign (50% of travel expenses are paid by the program) without any exclusions (heavier hit prefectures were being discussed as possible exclusions) for the time being.

We're in a three-day holiday weekend now, so I wouldn't expect any further updates until next week regarding this. Hopefully cases begin to gradually drop a bit, or at a minimum, don't climb much/any higher.

Corpse, doraemon 39 made similar numbers on Friday and the went on to make 696 million over the weekend frame. Is something similar to 696 million possible?

It's not impossible for it to recover similarly, which is why I'm not writing it off as a complete disappointment yet. Saturday presales are quite low though, so I wouldn't anticipate that much of a bounce back.

I'll go ahead and list the reasons on why it may disappoint though to better understand it:

-Takashi Yamazaki: Once acclaimed, award-winning director who has earned a bad reputation with several poorly received films in recent years, including failed adaptations of iconic properties like Lupin III and Dragon Quest.
-Wedding story: Not appealing to its young audience, just to their parents/grandparents.
-COVID: Family films have shown to be the most impacted (almost only impacted) by the pandemic. They're just a lot more cautious about going out.
-Doraemon fatigue: This may sound strange since there have been so many films and Japan has several annual franchises, but we just had one back in August that just wrapped up last month.
-Demon Slayer: Competition doesn't typically hurt films in this market, since each film kind of carves out its own audience, but any casual moviegoers are definitely still going to see Demon Slayer versus another Doraemon film.

I think we are approaching more of a weekend around $9M- $10M than a weekend around $11M- $12M now, but it's obviously already very good enough for Demon Slayer to make his 6th weekend the 6th best weekend ever

Saturday is going to start off looking "low". I expect the pre-sales figure will be down 50% or more in the morning (reservions were very high last Sat. due to the limited giveaway), and the morning/afternoon updates will also probably be off 50% or more versus last Saturday. But it'll close that gap in the evening and night shows, and probably come in around 40% off versus last Saturday. This is all excepted and normal. Last Saturday basically acted like how a national discount day would have due to the big boost it received from the giveaway (1st day of it) and having the busiest theater chain (Toho Cinemas) offer discounted tickets. It was UP versus the prior Saturday at the usual locations.

Also, Saturdays are typically a little deflated on holiday weekends as more of the business goes to Sunday, while Monday can come close to matching/beating Saturday in most cases. I can almost read the messages here in the next 12 hours when the first updates begin and it's down a lot versus last Saturday. This is normal, guys. Remember that its fourth Sunday versus its third Sunday (national discount day) was down 41%, yet it ended the weekend off just 29%. Something similar to this should be expected this weekend. Sat. down ~40% or something; Sun. down ~20% or something; Weekend probably down around ~30% or something.

Yes of course it's quite normal and understandable, I'm just saying that this weekend will be a little below your predictions even if this weekend will still be very strong, and anyway maybe we will wait anyway the $244M by Sunday as you predicted when we get real values on Monday

Hey, I've been lurking for some weeks and decided to join. Question:

1) Is there a way to stop logging out everytime I close my browser?
2) Did Spirited away reach 30 billion during it's original run it after a re-release ? How much did the original run make?

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Demon Slayer Obliterating Record Books
Saturday pre-sales (~50% of the market):

>Demon Slayer is way down versus last Saturday in presales, but almost 3x higher than Doraemon. Remember, Toho Cinemas represents almost 40% of the theaters apart of those counted in the presales, and last Saturday was a discount day at their locations, in addition to the first day of the giveaway. Presales being down so much isn't weird or bad. Still looks like a 40% or slightly higher drop to me for the day, but remember that Sunday is going to be much bigger both due to the holiday on Monday (which boosts night sales), but also because last Sunday was slightly deflated from the stronger Saturday.

I'm thinking...¥1-1.1 billion ($9.5-10.5 million) on 750,000-850,000 admissions over the weekend, and ¥1.4-1.5 billion ($13.5-14.5 million) on 1.05-1.15 million admissions over the 3-day holiday weekend. It'll likely claim the Biggest Sixth Weekend Record, but this one will be a lot closer than the past five weekend records as a lot films (including the current record holder) are in holiday periods in their sixth weeks/weekends (typically New Year, Golden Week, or Obon Festival).

>Stand By Me, Doraemon 2's presales for the day are about 30% below the release this past August. I expect it'll have a slightly better Sunday bump (due to the holiday on Monday), and am currently projecting it'll open to about 20-25% less in admissions versus the August release. It will have a higher average ticket price though due to the IMAX release and slight more adult appeal, so it could manage to come within 15-20% of the August film.

I'm thinking... ¥350-400 million ($3.5/4 million) on 275,000-300,000 admissions over the weekend, and ¥600-650 million ($6/6.5 million) on 450,000-500,000 admissions over its first four days (Fri.-Mon.) in release.

Welcome to the forum.

I'm not sure about your first question. I'd say remember to check "Remember Me" (or whatever it says here), but I feel that might be self-explanatory and isn't the problem here. You're not the first to mention it this week. Maybe Jack Sparrow can provide an answer.

On question two, it earned ¥30.40 billion (which was later upgraded to ¥30.80 billion about 15-years later) in its original run. It was nearing ¥29 billion before it fell out of the top 10, but several weeks later, it won the Best Animated Film Oscar and resurfaced back in the top 10 for a few weeks to get to its ¥30.40 billion total. As for the newer official ¥30.80 billion total (¥400 million more) that's been reported the past four years, I can only guess it's from a re-release. Re-release figures are always separated from original runs in the market though, so I'm not sure why they'd make this the sole exception. Its gross from this past summer's re-release also hasn't been included in any news articles that have mentioned it recently either.
