This list has grown much bigger than I generally like (and I like long lists!), but many of the bigger films still achieve their status with third weekends in the ¥500/600 million range, so I don't want to cut it off any higher...

At this rate it will take until its 5th weekend (or maybe even 6th since it has November 14 during its 5th weekend) for it to fall below The Matrix Reloaded in admissions.

Is there a movie which started dropping big a lot after its first time drop big weekend?

Hello, I have 2 questions :

1. After his 3th weekend, Frozen 2 "only" made $65M for example, Could Demon Slayer make only $60M-$70M after his 3th week end ? And according to you guys what is the minimum guaranteed that Demon Slayer should add after his 3th week end ?

2. Could Demon Slayer beat the previous opening week end record (Matrix Reloaded = $18,8M) in term of admissions and dollars during his 4th week end ? (I know that it is almost impossible)

1. No way. Demon Slayer's third weekend is going to be more than double Frozen II's third weekend, so even if it would have similar legs from thereon, it'd make double $120/140 million as a result, or more, than that since it's up by more than double now. If it had Frozen II's legs after Sunday, it'd reach ¥34 billion ($332 million). And Frozen II actually had somewhat "poor" (or normal) legs.

Danhjpn: This point above also answers your question. Frozen II is the best example of a film starting out high, having a great second and third week, but started to fall a bit hard after that. It's one of the more frontloaded uber-blockbusters, but it still managed a 2.22 multiplier off its 3-week total.

2. I'm expecting it to come down from God's roof in its fourth weekend. Tomorrow is a national discount day on the busiest day of the week (Sunday), and Tuesday is a national holiday, so presumably it'll have burned off at least some demand at this point (nearing a month in release...). Just note that when I say come down from God's roof I mean it will probably have its first weekend/week on par with the biggest weekends/weeks of every other film. Basically, its fourth weekend would be as high as the biggest opening weekends before it.

Corpse would the special/fan screening tonight be pricey than usual tickets? I believe Saturday over evening could still explode like Friday we might just see a bigger walk-up business now that there are more than enough seats available and that there is no urgency anymore as the past two weekends. Do you think it can do a little better over evening shows?

The stage greeting showings being broadcast live are happening at 16:40 (4:40pm) and would have been included in the Saturday reservations. They were all sold out or nearly so to start the day.

It's going to have a better hold today than the 36% decline in reservations versus last Saturday though. It's not always true, but the majority of the time a film does a little better ~5-10% better for the day itself, so expect a Sat.-to-Sat. decline around 25-30% (currently down 31% shortly after 10am).

And that's good, you could even call it great because:

1. It's the Saturday before a national discount ticket day, so it's losing some business to Sunday because of this.

2. Unless it take an unexpected turn later today, it's going to achieve the sixth biggest day ever (just needs to avoid a 38% drop). And guess what that's behind? Yep, itself. After today, Demon Slayer will have the SIX biggest days ever under its belt. Today will be the sixth biggest day ever behind its first Saturday, first Sunday, second Sunday, second Saturday, and first Friday (in that order). And... tomorrow will give it the SEVEN biggest days ever.

How close can Tuesday get to the single day non-DS record?

Very nice. MORE RECORDS! I knew it broke the IMAX record on its opening weekend, and that its second weekend on IMAX also topped Star Wars IX's opening weekend to give Demon Slayer the top 2 IMAX weekends as the report says. This weekend will probably give it the third biggest in IMAX, too (don't believe those are discounted).



Weekday holidays vary in strength, from which day it is, the time of year, and individual films receive varying boosts depending on their demographic. But generally they can deliver 3/4 of the business of the Saturday and/or Sunday. Since Sunday is gong to benefit from being a discount day, I wouldn't use it as reference this week, so comparing it to Saturday will probably be more accurate for the time being.

Frozen II's second Sunday (a discount day) is the biggest known non-Demon Slayer single-day. It came in at 532,000 admissions at the usual locations, and 790,000 overall. For Demon Slayer to beat that on Tuesday, thus giving it the top EIGHT biggest single-days ever..., it's probably going to need to retain 90%+ of Saturday's business. Not impossible, but probably going to fall a bit short.

However, it's the first holiday the film has had, and it has enough family/student appeal that it should benefit nicely from a weekday holiday, so it can't be ruled out. If Saturday ends up coming in a little higher than expected, that'll also help its chances.

Also, it'll certainly break the Tuesday record for sure this upcoming week. I miscalculated when making this claim last week (record still belongs to Frozen's Tuesday at the end of Golden Week), but this Tuesday will make it true.

As of 2PM today, it's only down about 21% versus last Saturday. The very late Saturday shows didn't look quite as strong to me as normal when I checked earlier (likely from people waiting until tomorrow to get the discount price at that point), but it should remain pretty stable for the rest of the day, possibly improving a bit until 9pm or so.

I'd be surprised if today drops more than 25% now. So, probably targeting 625,000-650,000 admissions at the usual locations, and 815,000-850,000 admissions overall for ~¥1.1 billion ($10.5 million) for the day. And a 20% drop would give it a third Saturday on par with its opening day. I wouldn't expect that, but it's possible.

As for the weekend, the prediction earlier looks good (¥2.3 billion ($22 million) / 1.9 million admissions), but it could end up slightly higher. 2 million admissions over its third weekend, while certainly difficult, would be possible if Saturday comes in at/above 850,000.

Couldn't think of any in modern era of digital prints and wide releases. The best I could think of is Baahubali 2 in India which had 2nd weekend higher than opening weekend record while 3rd weekend was around 70% of the record.

Similarly Return of the Jedi in USA/Canada had 2 weekend above weekend record, 3rd was 82% of record.

Avengers: Endgame in Netherlands had 2 weekend above previous record of Infinity War but the 3rd was just 43% of record. If there was no Endgame, The Lion King would have achieved in Netherlands. It had 4 weekends above the previous record of Infinity War but only opening weekend over Endgame.

I won't really say Frozen 2 had bad legs. It had legs almost comparable to Chamber of Secrets. What happened to F2 was skewing of legs in mid-run due to New Year-Xmas holidays, which also happened with other major November openers which I checked at that time.

I was surprised with more than what I expected jump during New Year but eventually it ended around $125mn.

Looks like around 665k today.

Also they announced exceeding 10mln admissions at the stage greeting today.

It'll probably finish at 666,000 admissions today, quite fitting since it's Halloween! That's good for over 850,000 overall today, and likely closer to 875,000.

That's only a 21/22% drop versus last Saturday, too, and means today became the sixth biggest single day ever, with the film already claiming the top 5 biggest single days.

I'll have an estimate posted when the day officially ends, but it should be enough to allow Sunday to get the weekend above 2 million admissions again for a THIRD weekend over the mark. Remember, before Demon Slayer, no film had even achieved 1.5 million admissions over the weekend.

Also, it's never been done, but the programmer released the Sunday reservations (443,107!) and they're the second highest daily reservations the film has recorded (after just its first Saturday), up 71% versus yesterday. It won't really increase 71% tomorrow (it's not mathematically possible), but it'll likely stay flat/see a slight increase versus last Sunday.

Tomorrow will be its fifth day selling more than 1 million admissions. No film before it had even sold 1 million admissions in one day (not even 800,000!).

Updated this earlier in the week when it became obvious that it'd break 10 million admissions on Saturday (closer to 11 million even), its 16th-day in release, but it was officially announced yesterday during the stage greeting event as JustLurking posted.

Note: Only five other films have sold 10 million admissions, but the day in which they reached the milestone is unknown: Tokyo Olympiad (1965), Titanic (1997), Emperor Meiji and the Great Russo-Japanese War (1958), Godzilla vs. King Kong (1962), and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982). Not knowing how films performed on a daily/weekly basis back in the 50s and 60s, those will likely always be unknown, but both Titanic and E.T. would have taken quite some time to reach 10 million admissions and would be near the bottom of the list (Titanic was likely faster than Avatar, while E.T. is almost definitely at the very bottom).

What's the highest single day excluding Demon Slayer? I know Frozen 2 had about 840m on dec 1.
If that is the highest single day, DS might be able to beat it on Tuesday and next weekend and get all top 10 single days

Also i think the presale number for saturday missed some showings as the total seat number is only 800k while for sunday it's 900k, they should have similar number of seats. The true presale for saturday should be around 300k-ish (it probably missed the greeting showings and they have higher attendance), and sunday is about 50% higher on presales
