List of theaters chains that have announced they'll be resuming 100% occupancy on September 19th:

109 Cinemas
Cinema City
Cinema Sunshine
Korona World Cinemas

These are smaller chains, but they suggest the larger chains, namely Toho Cinemas and Aeon Cinemas which account for around 70% of the country's theaters combined, will likely announce tomorrow (since ticket reservations are updated to include the following week every Wednesday) that they're going back to 100% occupancy as well on September 19th.

Also, Warner Bros. just announced that pre-sales for Tenet, releasing on Sept. 18th, are currently 60% above Dunkirk's, 48% above Kong: Skull Island's, and 30% above Ready Player One's.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Theaters To Resume 100% Capacity This
Christopher Nolan - Box-Office History:

Opening Weekends:
¥780.0 million ($7.8 million) / 600,000 - Inception*
¥372.0 million ($4.6 million) / 269,170 - The Dark Knight Rises
¥333.2 million ($3.1 million) / 248,167 - The Dark Knight
¥323.9 million ($3.0 million) / 220,149 - Dunkirk
¥290.2 million ($2.7 million) / 215,000 - Batman Begins
¥193.4 million ($1.7 million) / 137,490 - Interstellar
¥171.4 million ($1.4 million) / 128,389 - Insomnia
¥112.6 million ($0.9 million) / x95,516 - The Prestige

*Note: Japan Box-Office History Lesson:
Inception's opening weekend (above) was a reported 6-day gross from Warner Bros. that included previews and its Friday earnings. In order to claim a #1 debut when it opened (because it would have been #3), Warner Bros. was kinda shady and combined all of its figures together in order to do so. And due to this happening, Eiren (Producers Association of Motion Pictures) ruled that previews and early showings could no longer be reported as part of a film's opening weekend gross. So, Inception holds the honor (dishonor?) of being the LAST film in the market to have early showings/previews included in its opening weekend. And almost no studio bothers with previews anymore as a result since they are excluded, thus lowering the opening weekend potential.

Totals:
¥3.50 billion ($42.9 million) / 2.70 million - Inception
¥1.97 billion ($24.2 million) / 1.49 million - The Dark Knight Rises
¥1.64 billion ($14.7 million) / 1.17 million - Dunkirk
¥1.60 billion ($15.8 million) / 1.25 million - The Dark Knight
¥1.40 billion ($14.1 million) / 1.08 million - Batman Begins
¥1.25 billion ($10.8 million) / 0.91 million - Interstellar
¥950.0 million ($7.8 million) / 0.73 million - Insomnia *Est.*
¥500.0 million ($4.1 million) / 0.38 million - The Prestige *Est.*

Tenet will be aiming for the second highest debut (likely highest for the true 2-day opening weekend) for a Nolan film, targeting ¥400-500 million ($4-5 million) based on the pre-sales reported by Warner Bros.. And would certainly become Nolan's second highest-grossing film if it opens that high, likely finishing near or above ¥2.5 billion ($25 million).

I'm pretty surprised at how low the multipliers are. Aside from Interstellar, his movies have pretty poor legs.

Nolan has earned a solid, reliable fanbase in the market, explaining the sub-par legs with fairly consistent multipliers for his films.

Corpse, I just checked Toho cinemas and Aeon cinemas website for 19 September and they are still going to run on 50% capacity.

Indeed. Toho Cinemas hasn't actually made any announcement, but ticket sales have begun for the weekend and their locations are still at 50%. Aeon Cinemas did make an announcement about being able to lift their restrictions, but are going to remain at 50% for the time being.

Someone mentioned that it could be due to them being such large chains, the two largest, and having theaters all over the country, and were unable to change back to 100% capacity before the weekend began. Since Japan has reserved seating, it's not as easy as flipping a switch.

SMT Cinemas, a medium-sized chain, appears to be lifting their 50% capacity, but they're making it very complicated because of the reservation system. For this weekend, Sept. 19-23 (long holiday weekend), tickets can only be purchased as early as 2-days in advance and only if you're a member with them. And if you're not a member, you can buy tickets tickets just 24-hours in advance but only online. And finally, if you're just going to the theater in person, you have to hope any seats remain after the members and online sales are finished.

Toho and Aeon also operate on a reservation system with memberships and such, so I don't blame them for not trying to rush and make some complicated plan like SMT this weekend. As long as things don't change in the coming weeks, I'm sure they'll go back to 100% pretty soon.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: Theaters To Resume 100% Capacity This
I was wanting to post a forecast this weekend, but with several chains resuming 100% capacity, it messes up the real-time ticket sale calculations at the usual locations (~75% of the market) due to reserved seating charts being changed, and it takes an extra day to report accurate admissions.

This weekend is also a long 4-day holiday weekend (09/19-22) since both Monday and Tuesday are national holidays, so weekend actuals won't be reported until Wednesday. However, I'll do my best to provide Weekend Estimates in the coming days.

I google translate internet reviews and surprised that Japanese audience are not as confused by Tenet as the rest of the world (including me).

I see some reviews mention that it's confusing, but I'd say they're just 20/25% of the total online reviews at the moment. More audience reviews, I think, appreciate how it actually explains itself, calling it rational and without (or fewer) plot holes than many other films that handle the subject matter. But I've also seen some reviews say that it's not possible in the realm of science or a world of physics, yet they gave it a 4 or 5-star score. So who knows. LOL.

In the end, audiences are largely enjoying it with audience scores averaging about 4/5 across various movie sites. But keep in mind that the majority of these audience reviews are going to be from Nolan's established fanbase in the market, not from an average moviegoer.

And, while giving an estimate isn't going to be accurate this weekend due to many chains going back to 100% capacity as I mentioned, throwing off their ticket sales, I feel confident in saying it's likely going to become Nolan's second biggest opener in the market.

Subtitles would probably help actually. The sound mixing can't drown them out.

And subtitle showings are much more popular than dubbed showings in the market, so it'll be getting plenty of viewers there.

I want to post Weekend Estimates, but they're just going to possibly be too inaccurate (due to the many chains resuming 100% occupancy and having to adjust to that) for me to feel comfortable posting them. That said, I'll provide an estimate, a rough estimate (maybe range), for Tenet. And if Warner Bros. releases their number for the film in the market, that would help calculate other estimates.

And remember, Monday and Tuesday are both national holidays this year, so Weekend Actuals are going to be delayed until Wednesday this week.

Theaters will be handing out a limited-print of "Rengoku Volume 0" (prequel featuring a central character in the film, drawn by the manga creator, Koyoharu Gotouge ) to the first 4.5 million moviegoers who see Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, debuting on October 16th. The film is adapting the manga arc that begins immediately after the conclusion of season one of the anime last year, thus acting as its second season.

This is going to be huge. These limited giveaways aren't uncommon for highly-anticipated releases with a huge fanbase, but I can't remember any other manga giveaway going as high as 4.5 million. That seems to be a calculated number, too, because all 21 volumes of the manga that are available are nearing 4 million copies sold (volume 1 will exceed that figure next week). And volume 22, the second to last volume, is releasing October 2nd, just two-weeks before the movie opens.

I knew this film was going to have a potentially record-opening weekend, and this announcement just further confirms its status. Toho Cinemas and Aeon Cinemas have a month to get back to 100% occupancy. And I have a hard time seeing it selling fewer than the 4.5 million in admissions overall now, too, so we're likely to see it sell over 5 million admissions and beat Star Wars for the 2020 yearly crown.

Demon Slayer has sold over 65.4 million copes in the past 10-months in Japan alone (yearly record), 71.6 million overall in Japan since debuting back in 2016 (fastest manga to reach 70 million), and will exceed 100 million copies in circulation worldwide next week (also in record time).

Nice. I'll try using that to put together the Weekend Estimates. I'm going to presume that's since Friday, so 3-day, but that's fine. Not as high as Warner Bros.'s pre-sale report was suggesting, but coming in above Dunkirk is good news. Especially since the next two-days are national holidays, so it'll further increase its lead.

If I don't get estimates up today, I'll have them up tomorrow in addition to Monday's holiday estimates.

One Piece Film Gold had 5 million copies printed for its special "Volume 777" , think that's the highest still.

Wowza. I didn't realize it was so high. But not surprising since Film Z sold 5.6 million admissions, so offering a limited giveaway of 5 million with the next film (Gold) was a reasonable decision.

Good weekend. I'm not really going to provide any analysis until Weekend Actuals are available this week. Consider the Weekend Estimates above to be rough, since the normal method of calculating them was thrown off going into the weekend after several chains moved from 50% capacity back to 100% capacity.

>Tenet, according to Warner Bros. out-opened both Interstellar (no surprise) and Dunkirk, which appears accurate based on my estimates as well, although it's very close to Dunkirk and I expect their admissions were very similar, but Tenet probably has the edge in revenue due to more IMAX showings.

Nolan's films are usually frontloaded due to the dedicated fanbase he has in the market, but this estimated start should get it above ¥2 billion (~$20 million) since legs should be a bit stronger this time. As long as it beats The Dark Knight Rises's ¥1.97 billion total, it'll become Nolan's second biggest film in the market, only behind Inception.

>Violet Evergarden: The Movie settled for second place, but it delivered a strong second place debut (I even think it was #1 on Friday, at least in admissions). Its estimated opening is even more rough, however, since these types of animated films have varying average ticket prices. Whatever the number ends up being, it's a big success and should clear ¥1.5 billion (~$15 million).

I also expanded the Top 10 a bit this weekend to keep better track of The Confidence Man JP: Episode of the Princess (since it's performed so well) and Onward (which hasn't performed well, but still has a slim shot of beating Brave at least).

Monday and Tuesday were national holidays, so I'll have those Daily Estimates up later this afternoon.

How is the DisneyPlus streaming service doing in Japan. Since Disney is popular I assume it could get a lot of subscriber. Since Star Wars is huge in Japan hopefully The Mandalorian is popular.

Post Re: Japan Box-Office: WKND Estimates (09/19-20) & Monday Est
Monday's estimates were edited slightly due to incoming actuals. While the Monday grosses remain estimates, the 5-day totals (Friday-Tuesday) for Tenet and Violet Evergarden above are the reported actuals.

Also, their Monday grosses will remain estimates, but the totals (as of Tuesday, Sept. 23rd) for Stigmatized Properties, Doraemon, Tapestry, From Today, It's My Turn!, and Fate/stay night have been updated above as well. They're not 100% actual totals since leading up to all the actuals being released, studios usually report totals as "X film has grossed over ¥1.8 billion." That means it's above ¥1.8 billion but below ¥1.85 billion (so somewhere between ¥1.80-1.849 billion) since any higher would result in the report saying "X film is approaching ¥1.9 billion."

Full Weekend Actuals will be available later this evening, so I'm going to holdoff on posting the Tuesday holiday estimates until tomorrow so the totals will be more accurate.

Along with the Weekend Actuals being released earlier, most films also had their cumulative totals up through Tuesday released as well. Monday and Tuesday were national holidays, making it a long 4-day holiday weekend (5-day for openers).

So, I won't even bother with the Tuesday estimates now. And I'll post the Weekend Actuals and Chart Updates (as of Tuesday, Sept. 22nd) early tomorrow morning.
