Post Re: Japan Box Office: Frozen 2 (Record Opening Weekend)
It'll be counted as a 2020 release, yes, but I'm just talking about the calendar year itself (Jan.-Dec.) with that statement.

Technically, Frozen II will also be counted as a 2020 release by Eiren, too, since it'll earn more than ¥1 billion after December 1st. This is also why you still see Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald included on the 2019 updates despite being a 2018 release.

Why was Bohemian Rhapsody the exception to this rule?

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Frozen 2 (Record Opening Weekend)
I really don't have a good answer for that. It could be because of how early in November it opened (first week, I think), but it ended up fitting the criteria to fall into the next year (¥1 billion earned and/or more than 50% of its total earned after December 1st).

It's actually still in theaters too, after over a year in release now. Its total was updated just this past week (up to ¥13.09 billion now). I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up on Eiren's 2019 list come January.

Something similar happened back in 2004/2005 with Howl's Moving Castle (opened mid-November), but that's the only known case of this situation occurring. Eiren initially had it listed on their 2004 list with a "projected final total" of ¥20 billion, despite it still playing strongly and just recently falling from #1 (yes, #1) at the time of their press release. They then included it on their 2005 list with its actual final total of ¥19.60 billion, but never edited (or deleted) their 2004 report.

The December to November box-office year is certainly the most confusing thing about the Japan box-office, in my opinion.

Japanese audiences came out in full for this weekend for Frozen II, showing they're clearing not ready to "Let It Go". Frozen became the third highest grossing film, and second most attended film, of all-time in Japan back in 2014.

>Frozen II got off to a record-start, selling 1,210,000 admissions over the weekend frame alone across 878 screens; and selling 1,452,530 admissions after three-days in release. This debut is 117% higher than the first film, and either set some very impressive records or achieve high accolades in the process. Here are some below:

Records:
*Biggest Opening Weekend Of 2019 - Revenue and Admissions.
*Biggest Opening Weekend For An Imported Animated Film - Revenue and Admissions.
*Biggest Disney Opening Weekend Ever - Revenue and Admissions.
*Biggest Opening Weekend For An Animated Film In November - Revenue and Admissions.

Accomplishments:
*Second Biggest Opening Weekend Ever For An Animated Film - Revenue and Admissions.
*Second Biggest Opening Weekend Of The Decade - Revenue and Admissions.
*Second Biggest Opening Weekend Since 2007 - Revenue and Admissions.
*Second Biggest Opening Weekend In November - Revenue and Admissions.
*Tenth Biggest Opening Weekend Ever - Revenue.
*Twelfth Biggest Opening Weekend Ever - Admissions.
*Seventh Animated Film to Ever Debut Above 1,000,000 Admissions.
*Thirteenth Overall Film to Ever Debut Above 1,000,000 Admissions.

So, what sort of path does this absolutely stellar debut put the film on? It's always difficult to project a likely finish, or even pinpoint a likely range, after a single weekend in the market, but it's going to be a lot. Even if it has "average" legs for this time of year for a major animated film, it's likely going to exceed ¥15 billion ($140 million), but the likelihood of it grossing more is very high, and it'll probably approach the ¥20 billion ($180 million+) milestone.

What other Hollywood movies should Japan drool over? Frozen II is just out of this world popular in Japan.

And I'm 95% sure this is going to be the biggest film of the year.

Better if they drooled over homegrown, non-Hollywood films, like the Chinese market does.

Who are you to judge what they like? It's really annoying when people get upset with certain markets (e.g. China and the Fast and Furious films) for supporting films they view as mediocre.

It's a forum. We're free to post opinions here and make judgments.

So, Sumikko Gurashi seems to be real and not the result of fan events. Very nice performance I guess, let's see how far beyond 1bil it goes. Non-franchise anime films this year haven't exactly had a good time, and it's either gonna be this one or Promare for second place after Weathering with you. With apologies to Toho's efforts with Hello world and Her blue sky

I won't argue that Japan loves Disney. They do, especially this past decade, and Disney has become far and away the biggest international distributor in the market. Warner Bros. used to do well, and provided good competition, but since Harry Potter concluded, they've become a very distant second place contender.

That said, Japanese films have earned more than imported films every year since 2008, and that isn't going to change this year or in the foreseeable future. Local distributor Toho also remains the #1 overall distributor in the country, averaging between a 32%-38% market share each year since at least 2010 (I don't have data for earlier), and that's also unlikely to change anytime soon.

Indeed. It continues to do great business -- a 2% decline after a 52% increase last weekend (due to the fan events) is equally as impressive.

Its amazing that the market for rest of the movies stays open even during an ALL TIME record opener. Japan is truly fascinating in trends like these.

The whole box-office usually benefits when a big films opens, and the bigger they open, the better holdovers tend to hold. Everything in the Top 10 had a sub-40% drop, and only one film in the Top 15 dropped 50%+.

The only time you'll really see a holdover in the Top 10 experience a large decline (50%+) when a big film opens if if they lose most, or all, of their premium format showings. And even then, it's possible to still avoid a 50% drop if the studio and theaters gave it enough 2D showings to still support business.

Yes that is my observation as well. Its like with a big opener the movie market expands, such a fascinating phenomenon at totally opposite to the rest of the markets. I remember a few years back (think 2009 and 2010) when this was happening in states once in a while. It still happens in States during December holidays but to see it happen on a regular weekend is amazing.

Climbing quickly on last Sat, at 43897 being just 42% down at same point. At this rate of +13 percent points every hour, maybe an increase is on the cards :ninja:

But realistically, I could see easily 300k+ at this point, heck even potentially second best saturday ever

A sub-20% second weekend decline that a lot of uber-openers typically see doesn't look to be in play, but a 30% or better hold seems likely. It's still early though, and second Sundays are more important to watch.

Anything better than a 38.1% drop gives it a ¥1 billion+ second weekend, and that's pretty much guaranteed. A 25-30% drop looks like the most likely range to me right now.

So look for a second weekend around ¥1.15/¥1.2 billion ($10.5-$11.0 million) at this moment. The Biggest Second Weekend record will probably always belong to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (it managed to increase after a record opening weekend back in the day), but Frozen II will be aiming to crack the Top 5 on that list.
