Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Charts Updated! (11/1
Frozen 2 pre-sales are a little on the low side of what I would have expected; however, it's pretty clear that most moviegoers are likely to just wait until Saturday/Sunday instead or rushing out to see it on Friday based on current ticket sales.

I'm not getting the feeling it's going to have a huge, record-breaking opening weekend, but it's still looking strong right now in my opinion. It's important to remember that Japan is a backloaded market, so we often have to play the waiting game to determine success.

I'll have the Weekend Actuals from this past weekend up soon.

>Terminator: Dark Fate repeats atop the weekend box-office, delivering a fair second weekend hold, selling a further 205,317 admissions. After ten days in release, the sixth-entry in the Terminator franchise has sold 956,091 admissions. It remains on track for a total between ¥2.5-3.0 billion ($25-30 million), likely finishing on the low-end of that range.

>It: Chapter Two continues to have excellent holds, and like its predecessor, may end up legging its way across the ¥2 billion ($20 million) milestone once again.

>Sumikko Gurashi: The Pop-Up Book and the Mystery Child enjoyed a marvelous second weekend increase to rise into the Top 3. There are limited special fan screenings going on in Tokyo, which reportedly sold out after just 5 minutes of going on sale prior to the weekend. These screenings likely won't last long (may already be over), but they were certainly a huge success.

>Joker comes in fourth place in its seventh weekend of release. It has slowed slightly, and reaching the blockbuster milestone of ¥5 billion will probably come down to how long Warner Bros. keeps it playing. That said, even if it does barely miss the mark, it wasn't expected to come anywhere near this level of success (half as much would have been considered great), so win-win all around.

This upcoming weekend sees the release of Frozen 2. What to expect from the sequel to the third-highest grossing of all-time in Japan? I'll be providing in-depth tracking (hourly updates) over the weekend.

Hey Corpse, what do you think that Sumikko Gurashi can do with that kind of start (growing immensly from its opening Friday to its opening weekend and then from that to the second weekend)? Is there any potential to do something similar (if smaller) to what In this corner of the world did in 2016, starting out in limited release, striking gold at its start, being incredibly leggy and making itself into a commercial success even before the wide release? Or is it propped up by fan events and it'll come crushing down? Pretty excited to follow its run after that kind of start

After Hello world and Her blue sky did less than spectacular, I wonder if it can give a run to Promare for the second biggest non-franchise anime film of the year (after WWY)

I believe it's being boosted by the special screenings, so we'll have to see how it behaves after the special screenings run their course. Today, Thursday, seems to be that day since it's having a "normal" drop (currently a good 20/25%) today. I wouldn't anticipate another run like 2016's In This Corner of the World, but a smaller-scale, and still good, performance looks possible.

The only thing that may limit it is that it's skewing pretty young. Its weekdays are very low because of this, and without any holiday support until January, really, it's going to remain a weekend film for quite some time. The poor weekday business could quicken it losing theaters/screenings.

November 23rd is the next, and last, national holiday on the calendar until January 1st now due to Emperor Akihito abdicating the throne this year (his birthday, December 23rd, was a holiday for the last 30 years). February 23rd, Emperor Naruhito's birthday, is the new Emperor's Day holiday date.

Also, since November 23rd falls on a Saturday this year, it's not going to provide any real boost at the box-office. Saturday is the worst day for any holiday to fall on in the market. Any holiday on a weekday provides a significant boost, and if one lands on a Sunday, then that Monday becomes a holiday as well. But a Saturday? Nothing.

So, Frozen 2 won't be able to take advantage of this either, and will have to wait until January 1st before receiving a holiday bump. I'm sure the film will do amazing, but releasing day-and-date in Japan wasn't a good choice. I'll talk more about this in the Weekend Forecast on Friday (in short: should have released in March again).

Frozen 2 will, unofficially, break the modern day showings/seating record, and it's doing so with ease.

Unsurprisingly, Disney and theaters are going all-out for its release. By comparison, it's receiving 50/60% more showings/seating than other major releases such as the recent Star Wars films or Disney live-action releases like Aladdin.

So, it'll have more than enough showings and seating available to allow for a record opening, or at least a mammoth one, but will it? I'll have a list up soon of widest releases in terms of showtimes/seating. Just note that receiving a trillion showtimes/seats doesn't always translate to a bigger opening. Interest, of course, still has to be there.

Below is the list of the widest releases in terms of available seating (bold figure), along with their theater count and showtime count in [brackets], on their first SATURDAY since 2015 from the usual locations (about two-thirds of the overall market).

There are unquestionably other films that would make this list released before 2015, but the upper-tier (700,000+) would probably still be those listed below due to the steady increase in new theaters opening and the addition of more screens to support premium formats (IMAX, 4DX) since 2014/2015. So making the claim that Frozen 2 will break the modern-day seating/showtime record is likely accurate, just unofficial.

And the numbers for Frozen 2 are for FRIDAY, not Saturday, so its Saturday numbers will actually go up slightly compared to those below.

Widest Releases (Seating) Since 2015 (Two-Thirds of Market):
1,066,153, [266/3,695] - Frozen 2 (Nov., 2019) *tentative*
919,956, [258/3,250] - Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (Nov., 2018)
816,498, [251/3,196] - Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (July, 2018)
775,754, [262/2,657] - Toy Story 4 (July, 2019)
766,440, [241/2,556] - Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (Nov., 2016)
725,315, [258/2,202] - Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire (Apr., 2019)
719,848, [261/2,370] - Weathering With You (July, 2019)
719,670, [261/2,374] - Aladdin (June, 2019)
714,702, [236/2,789] - Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Dec., 2015)
701,865, [247/2,864] - Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (July, 2017)
670,255, [254/2,527] - Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Dec., 2017)
668,663, [236/2,346] - Finding Dory (July, 2016)
667,610, [245/2,327] - Beauty and the Beast (Apr., 2017)
658,842, [231/2,256] - One Piece Film Gold (July, 2016)
655,976, [249/1,832] - Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer (Apr., 2018)
648,401, [259/2,096] - Godzilla: King of the Monsters (June, 2019)
648,160, [252/2,037] - Dragon Ball Super: Broly (Dec., 2018)
608,132, [250/1,979] - Code Blue (July, 2018)
605,267, [239/1,676] - Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter (Apr., 2017)
585,196, [254/1,787] - One Piece: Stampede (Aug., 2019)
547,894, [252/1,655] - Doraemon: Nobita's Chronicle of Moon Exploration (Mar., 2019)
533,783, [258/2,293] - Avengers: Endgame (Apr., 2019)
530,905, [230/1,502] - Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare (Apr., 2016)
530,456, [231/1,727] - Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan! (Dec., 2015)
520,369, [237/1,744] - Jurassic World (Aug., 2015)
517,134, [260/1,835] - Spider-Man: Far From Home (June, 2019)
515,406, [233/1,460] - Doraemon: Nobita and the Birth of Japan (Mar., 2016)
501,322, [240/1,487] - Doraemon: Nobita's Great Adventure in the Antarctic (Mar., 2017)

The average theater is playing Frozen 2 13.89 times on Friday. And on Saturday, that could hit 15. A few theaters, mostly in or near Shinjuku that are open 20 hours on the weekends, having it playing 35-40 times a day. There's also something called the "Magical Edition" version that I'll have to look into before Friday.

So do you think its beating TS4 OW. Should be easy with ginormous show count?

Just watch it, I don't think kids will like it as much as the first one. It's different, it is not more of the same. Though I still think it'll be the top performer of year 2019, surpassing Weathering with You.

That was always a given. But you dont need the legs of the 1st movie to have big OW. But we are all expecting 40% drop in Japan. Question is will it go lower if WOM is mixed.

3.6/5 on eiga.com - same as TLKs and TS4s scores, but lower than Frozen I and Aladdin's 3.9 and 4.1 scores, respectively

Comparing Friday performances to one another isn't the most accurate in Japan, but for comparisons sake:

Frozen II's Friday is:

22% lower than Weathering With You
10% lower than Detective Conan: The Fist of Blue Sapphire
11% higher than Toy Story 4

Now... I really don't think any of these are good comparisons. Weathering With You opened at the start of summer vacation, so it's natural for its Friday to be the biggest here (its opening weekend actually came in the lowest). You could argue that Toy Story 4 had a slightly deflated Friday because it opened on a long 4-day holiday weekend, where business is spread out (its opening weekend was boosted by the holiday Monday driving Sunday business).

The best comparison is probably Detective Conan. It didn't open on any sort of holiday or break period, making its opening weekend scenario the most similar to Frozen II. However, Detective Conan is a fan-driven franchise (is broadened its reach in recent years, but still fan-driven), so comparing them much further probably won't be accurate.

So what does this say about Frozen II's opening weekend prospects now?

Well, it's going to be big, very likely opening above ¥1 billion. I'm expecting on it coming in below Toy Story 4's opening weekend since that film had such an inflated Sunday due to the holiday Monday, but it might match/beat Weathering With You's opening weekend since that filmed burned off a little demand due to opening in the summer. I'm expecting a debut probably between the two.

That's my take on it at the moment, but Japan likes to throw curveballs once in awhile. I'll have in-depth tracking for it over the weekend beginning tonight.

The score has risen to 3.8. It could match its predecessor's score. The WOM is more important than the OW, as it is an indicator for legs. 1.25B with a 12 multiplier would be 15B

So we're about to see why I've said Friday isn't a good day to compare films with, and why it's not even accurate to predict how the weekend will play out.

I'm about to post the Saturday pre-sales for Frozen II. Just wait.

Yeah, that number is real.

I'll be tracking in hourly, beginning in the next hour. We're going to see something very, very special.

No, The Matrix Reloaded OW record one of the safest records in the market since it was released in the era of previews, and had an unknown preview number added to its opening weekend (some films received a weeks worth of previews back then).

But, I can see it certainly challenging the first Yo-Kai Watch film (in revenue, not admissions) to claim the biggest animated film OW record.

And I wouldn't bet on a big second weekend drop either. Generally, the bigger a film opens, the better its second weekend hold is in Japan. Second weekend drops (or increases) are actually some of the best during a film's run, and I wouldn't be surprised by a sub-15/20% decline.

Just to show how much of a backloaded market Japan truly is, and how audiences (fans or not), are in no rush to see a film ASAP (they are willing to wait weeks or months), Frozen II just set the perfect example of this:

Its Saturday pre-sales (just the pre-sales) were greater than its entire Friday by 55-60%.

A truly spectacular start to the day. A new Saturday record is going to be set, and I believe it's going to be by a considerable margin. I see it easily breaking 400,000 at the usual locations (70% of the market), and it will probably exceed 450,000 as well. I want to predict 500,000, but I'll wait a bit.

Been a while since I posted here.... But freaking hell is that insane :O :O :O :O

500k Saturday would mean 700k overall Saturday, meaning outside chance of ¥1B on SATURDAY alone right? Depending on avg tickets. If we say average at 1350, then 740k needed overall Saturday, so about 520k needed from the usuals.

ALL ABOARD THE HYPE TRAIN!! :1st: :1st: :1st: :1st:
