Apologies for not getting to the Weekend Forecast today.

It: Chapter Two will likely debut at #1, but its opening doesn't look to be particularly impressive, especially given the good reception of the first film (and how leggy it was). It's aiming for ¥200-250 million ($2-2.5 million) over the weekend, which isn't much higher than its predecessor's ¥184.5 million opening. And matching the legs of the original is very unlikely, so it's probably safe to call a lower total for Chapter Two.

Joker, in its fifth weekend, and the debut of After the Matinee will be in a close race for second place. I'm expecting a split here, with Joker coming in second in revenue, while After the Matinee edges out a second place opening in admissions. Both are likely headed for ¥175 million ($1.6 million) or so.

I'll post the November release schedule tomorrow.

Just watched Children of the Sea and it's quite bad. It's like the director has some very good messages but don't know how to convey them. Remind me of Ghibli's Tales from Earthsea or Shinkai's Children Who Chase Lost Voices. Don't know if this bad result is related to Studio 4°C black company controversy.

Tales from Earthsea could have been amazing, but Goro and Ghibli kinda flubbed in adapting it. Quite the shame since the novel(s) are great.

Follow-up since I didn't get around to the Weekend Forecast:

It: Chapter Two will definitely debut at #1, now aiming for the high-end of the range I projected yesterday. Not bad, but this could have been a breakout performance, again, given the performance that the original had in the market.

Joker will safely come in second place in its fifth weekend, still aiming for ¥175 million or so (down 30-35%).

After the Matinee slowed down going into the evening/night, and will settle for a third place debut. It's probably on track for ¥125 million, down a good bit from where early Saturday sales suggested.

Oh boy, Children of the sea... I didn't mind it but it definately peaked on "not good, really". I haven't watched Earthsea but I feel that this film is exactly what people who don't get Akira at all think that Akira is. Visually it's god damn insanely well crafted, with an attention to detail and and overwhelming amount of work done for it.

But otherwise, it has little in the way of characters and emotional investment, and the very little it has, it never cares to do anything with it. The bulk of it is an extended metaphor about higher concepts, which the movie outright explains after some point. Up until then, little of the story has to do with motivations of characters or consequences to their actions. It seems to be really weird and experimental in its storytelling because of no motivations or consequences to make the script make any bit of sense other than "things happen and then other things also happen"... until the movie flat out states "this is what's happening, it's a metaphor, every character is a pawn moved around by the metaphor"

Stupifyingly beautiful movie, technical mastery with little comparison, and also very, very empty of everything else meaningful

I watched it at Scotland loves anime, together with Stampede and Promare. Stampede must be incomprehensible for non-One Piece fans, it's a movie that wants to (and is pretty good at it) throw as many characters fans know and love on the screen in situations where they can show off their comedy bits and action moves. The villains exist to bring the ensemble together and never take any bit of the attention away from them. I'd have liked it more had the main foe not turned into a dodgy cg monster that destroyed the movie's background artwork after a while, but I had a blast either way, so...

Promare was a joyride. I'm biased, I love the director's and writer's previous works, but I found it amazing. Story-wise it's simple and very similar to their previous works, only dumber, funnier and with a bit of a parody streak... and at the same time it's really good at tying its characters with its themes. Real great work on them too, including discrimination and the morals of science. Visually it's a bit of a new direction, it has much less of the very flat shot compositions of Kill la Kill and Luluco. It features a lot of cg work, and a lot of bayhem in it... usually readable bayhem that is bombastic and chaotic without being disorienting or cluttery. Some incredible cuts of hand-drawn animation too. Overall it was very feel-good and felt almost like riding a great water slide (or a roller coaster, if you've never been to a water slide, I guess): it flails you around for as long as it lasts and then you go back to ride on it again. No wonder it did well to find its audience and get repeated viewings, ouen screenings and whatnot

And I missed Weathering with you because I was initially iffy if I wanted to see two movies one right after the other, prioritized Children of the sea, and when I decided to check on tickets they were sold out for the days I had planned to be there. Oh well, I went to a rewatch of Shape of voice instead and enjoyed it much more than the first time

Corpse,
What is your prediction for Frozen. Can it hit 20B.

I agree. What happened with Frozen cannot be replicated. But this will do well. I am just curious what Corpse thinks.

It's probably safe to assume a ~40% decline, but a lot also has to do with how the music resonates this time around. As you said, the success of the original is "impossible" to replicate, but another "Let It Go" smash would go a long way.

And if it does see what's become the standard ~40% decline that follow-ups to ultra-blockbusters (literally less than a handful of films) follow, no one should take this as a disappointing result. ¥15 billion is the milestone that's typically seen as the ceiling for anything. Something phenomenal must occur (almost always related to music in the market, or something major like a retirement) on a huge scale that can reach and attract a significant number of casual audiences to break that ceiling.

You'll notice a huge jump on the all-time chart with the films ranked #10-20 (¥12-15 billion range) to the top ranked films in the top 10 -- the grosses (and admissions) basically double due to attracting non-movie audiences.

No where close to full weekend actuals are available yet (barely a third) due to the holiday Monday (Culture Day) but all the cumulative totals have been released, so I'll post the 2019 Chart Updates in a bit.

When the weekend actuals are fully available, I'll post them later on (shouldn't be later than tomorrow).

Aside from Olaf, is the dubbed version of Frozen 2 retaining the same voice actors and singers as the first film?

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Charts Updated (11/04)
I has little doubt that its opening will be good since it's an established franchise, likely above ¥500 million (the previous two entries also broke ¥500 million in their debuts). The question is what sort of reception it'll receive from there.

Terminator: Genisys was pretty frontloaded, grossing ¥2.74 billion (just a 5.3 multiplier) to become the lowest-grossing film in the Terminator franchise. As long as Dark Fate can have similar opening weekend, it should be able to manage stronger legs (even if just slightly) and maybe reach/exceed ¥3 billion ($25-30 million).

I'll have a Terminator Box-Office History post up tomorrow.
