Logan numbers are more than reasonable. I do feel people will end up hating this movie, I mean just general audiences. Film lovers should love it.

I think it may be the opposite. Negative reviews call it superficial and adolescent (which it may or may not really be). General reception might be better than Venice.

I think the OW will be $100m+ but just not sure about the legs.

There is going to be that audience that goes to see it expecting an Venom type villain origin story and this is not going to be the film to please them. On the flip-side it will appeal to people who love good films so that may neutralise the free-fall somewhat.

Thinking $120m/$270m at best.

Yeah, the WOM and legs on this one is gonna be weird. Even the more mixed reviews concede that it's a fascinating film worth wrestling with, but in recent these kind of grim character studies (i'm thinking Drive or Nightcrawler) tend to get bad Cinemascores and mixed WOM because they're not very pleasant films. People going in hoping for a Suicide Squad-esque thrill-ride will almost certainly leave disappointed, even though the marketing has not promised any such thing. Or maybe audiences go "wow that was DEEP" and get more people to go see it. I could see anything from a 2.3 multiplier to a 4 multiplier, honestly.

Rationally, the film shouldn’t get much bigger legs than Logan which was well received by critics and core fans but was just moderately accepted by mainstream. So that puts its legs at 2.5-2.7.

But everything about this movie will be irrational because fuck it. 3.0+ multi.

That is how Excel and Magnus build the hype around the movies they love. This is also the statement from a super-hyped fanboy because the movie just won an award.

Drive didn't look anything like a popcorn movie. Joker may be dark and disturbing, but it looks entertaining.

Post Re: Joker: Bigger R-Rated Movie of All Time Club
Quote:
Todd Phillips’ R-rated DC villain movie Joker arrived on tracking today with an indexed first choice among all audiences in the low 20s among moviegoers that exceeded a mix of both superhero movies and R-rated fare including Batman v. Superman, Suicide Squad, It, It Chapter Two, Logan, Venom, Halloween, Us, John Wick Chapter 3 and more. That’s a huge number and speaks to Warner Bros.’ cool, hip positioning of this very dark take on the most notorious villain in the Batman canon, plus the great critical momentum that Joker has accumulated coming out of the fall film festival season, winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, notching a 78% fresh Rotten Tomatoes score out of TIFF along with Joaquin Phoenix solidifying himself as the leading best actor contender this awards season.

All of this suggests an average opening of $90M off one B.O. projection service’s report, which would rep a new opening record for the month of October, beating last October’s Venom ($80.2M). Another tracking service this morning had Joker‘s opening at $82M. Yes, Venom was a PG-13 rated film. However, two weekends later, Universal’s Halloween, a R-rated movie, became October’s second best debut of all-time with $76.2M. So, it’s possible that Joker can get to that $90M level. At present, Joker is a male-driven movie with a first choice male 25+ figure as high as Batman v. Superman and 3x John Wick Chapter 3, and a male under 25 first choice figure that’s a tad higher than BvS, and double Logan‘s.

I mean it's going to be BIG, but I'm not buying a $200M OW. I just don't see this movie having that level of mass appeal, but I am more than confident that $100M+ is pretty much close to being locked though.

Obviously tracking says $90m and $82m so Excel makes a conclusion that it will open to $200m+. I wonder if the tracking was actually $200m then Excel would suggest possibly a $500m+ OW?

Also it only says males numbers which is essentially 50%-60% of the total audience.

76% on RT after 91 reviews. Tracking at 75-90 million right now.

Not exactly glowing with "just" 76% at RT but that won't affect its BO by any chance though it might impact nominations outside of Phoenix.

Sounds about right. It's an artsy, divisive take on a character we've seen twice already in the last decade.

Ah fuck it.

The most popular character of the millennium returns in the film we always wanted and never thought we would get. And apparently the film delivers. It was never about the action, it's about the acting.

$200m opening weekend confirmed

I can something like $105m/$240m which would be huge considering the legs will be cut-back somewhat due to it being a different film than many expected.

Logan will remain the benchmark. I see about 230 from that

Still too early. Let's wait for the hold this upcoming weekend. OS audience were not buoyed by the controversy or security concerns.

The movie is posting great weekdays OS and in many places WOM is crazy good. Passing Deadpool OS is totally locked, passing it WW is like 99% sure.

Goal is Batman vs Superman's WW total.
