The Last Jedi? Out-opening Rogue One would be a more realistic expectation...

Let's get back to this conversation AFTER the Final Trailer drops in October.

People did not like TLJ and Star Wars is over saturated and no longer an event. Hype has gotten less with each subsequent episode and I don’t think the finale effect works unless the previous entries were really well liked. TFA wasn’t hated but it seems relatively forgotten compared to Ep 4-6 and even 1-3 even if people like it more than 1-2.

Do we remember DreamWorks sequels and their oversaturation with TV shows. This could be in the same boat with a new TV show coming just a month before. Even if they end the main trilogy here this isn't the last star wars movie by any means and most people know that. I also have concerns on the hook of this movie. Seeing Kylo and Rey fight it out isn't exciting when we have seen that in last two movies. It's still a Star wars movie so it will open big but I'm not expecting record breaking numbers or even $200m opening from this.

The fact that Palpatine has some role is a massively bigger hook than anything else involving Rey or Kylo.

People will show up more than anything for the links to the original characters and to (presumably) get the answers to all the questions that this trilogy has given rise to. The action scenes at this point are more secondary. Most of the box office of TFA is attributed to nostalgia for the original trilogy.

People didn't like TLJ. That's why it made $620 mil. Everyone knows only bad movies make $600+ mil.

It had a way worse multiple than TFA that certainly means something.

It means it didn't have as great a multiplier as the biggest domestic movie of all time. What an insane standard to hold it up to.

I mean legs were definitely lower to some level due to negative WOM by a significant section of the audience. TLJ had a lot less repeats than TFA.

ROS, with a better reception, should do better with repeats than TLJ as it’s the last one and I think that will drive people to see it again.

I agree but that is not enough of a hook compared to let's say Han Solo/Leia or Luke coming back plus its still not a good enough hook to call it a finale. It might loose that boost the other trilogies had if people are coming in to see the original characters. Are there any specific questions that this new trilogy raised other than maybe origins of Rey? (I am not a die-hard SW fan myself so maybe I missed a few things here)

There is no hook in the marketing. "The last Skywalker movie!!" doesn't work when 1) all the original iconic Skywalkers are gone so no one cares about these C-list new characters, Disney basically torpedoed the storyline by killing everyone off and forgetting to put Carrie Fisher into rehab, 2) everyone knows it's BS and they're going to keep pumping them out as long as they make money. Seeing Kylo and Rey fight is zzzzz at this point. No one cares. The rest of the characters are N/A. They haven't properly revealed the Emperor yet so I'm not counting it, but even that seems lame. He already pretty definitively died in Episode VI, bringing him back just reeks of desperation and I think people will sense that.

I wouldn't be surprised at an OW in the $130-$150m range.

Please, PLEASE tell me what "specific questions" were raised in the OT?

I'd love to know.

1) I’d be way more excited if Rian Johnson was back.

2) It should be called Rise of the Skywalker. Only one small change in word order but it sounds way better and fits the theme of the other part 3s.

Still should be fine. It’s an episode movie and that makes it must-see. $200M / $650M

This film needs a major visual in its campaign to ignite the hype, even if its a spoiler. ROTS didn't hold back with its marketing and showed shots of all the major moments (Obi-Wan vs. Anakin, Yoda vs. Palpatine, Vader) and that worked.

The shot of Rey with the dual-lightsaber is a good start but they need more. A quick shot of Luke vs. Palpatine (dont even know if this exists in the film but if it happens they need to tease it) would line everyone up on OW.

They're rushing things by ending it right now. This isn't the 1980s where horribly underwritten roles are just instantly bought ala THE ORIGINAL Star Wars TRILOGY.

They needed 1 film after THE LAST JEDI but before the finale to clarify and jumpstart things.

Everybody is going to come for this regardless tho

Post Re: Star Wars - Episode IX predictions (12/20/2019)
for the life of me I don't understand why they decided to have TLJ happen literally RIGHT after TFA. The first two movies take place in one week basically. It's very odd choice for a epic trilogy.

You can debate whether TLJ is good or bad or meh, but it was 100% the wrong story to tell from a commercial level. It should have had a time gap, it should have shown some aging of the characters, and it should have ended with a cliffhanger of some sorts. It didn't give enough reason for most people to get hyped for this film outside the fact that it's the "end" of the Skywalker saga (a statement no sensible person believes because Disney will 100% make a continuation of this at somepoint whenever they want).

ESB had Han Solo freezing and Vader revealing himself. That's how you set up a final film.

Hey, blame JJ. He ended TFA with the Luke thing. No way could Rian have just ignored that (even though he kinda did anyway)

He got death threats cause of a dumb sequence with Leia, an even dumber subplot on casino planet, and an even dumber subplot with the ship captain not revealing her plan to her people and causing a mutiny.
