Aladdin 2 only if it is Return of Jafar, as it is the most successful direct to video release of all time and will still get that nostalgia factor.

If Disney is in trouble the whole industry is in deep doodoo

I suspect the reason for Disney's overloaded schedule this year is their purchase of Fox. They're suddenly out of like $70 billion.

This has noticeably left their upcoming years a bit bare. They still have some aces under their sleeve though like Zootopia 2, Black Panther 2, more Guardians movies, and of course now they've absorbed a bunch of Fox franchises like Deadpool, Kingsman, and the Kenneth Branagh Agatha Christie adaptations.

Lion King backlash is strong. I sense a disturbance in the Force

I would jump for joy if this bombs. Great films take endless amount of resources and a lifetime of hard work honing talent from thousands of people. We don't need cynical cash grabs like this taking up all that.

It would be funny if Aladdin ended up out grossing this but it goes yet again to the people, Aladdin was just ok and is surprising, imagine if this was actually good, also how the hell do you fuck this up

You do realize that thousands of insanely talented VFX artists worked on this, right?

Yeah I never take joy in a film being bad. I've worked on too many to just see the insane amount of work and talent get wasted. To this day I've never worked on a big budget film that I can call good personally. That's like my number one goal, but when they say it doesn't matter the movie you work on, as long as you put your work in like any job it is kind of same. I understand when stars or even directors say they don't watch movies they are involved in because they basically aren't at the end of it.

Mild Game of Thrones spoilers within, don't read if you haven't finished the series

Spoiler: show
This is why it pains me to see so much backlash against the final season of GOT. They blew their ever-loving load with the final season in terms of VFX and budget, and to imagine the amount of hours put into just six episodes is staggering. All to be undone by people who weren't just disappointed, their whole eight year TV experience was RUINED by it.

I don't have faith in any of the directors in Phase 4, except for Ryan Coogler and James Gunn. I know Disney is trying to be more inclusive with the writers and directors...so good intentions I suppose. We'll see how it turns out...

Of course I didn't have faith in Gunn, Taikiti, Peyton Reed and a few others either and they surprised. Without the A team cast though, I expect $200-$250m DOM to be the going rate for many of the upcoming MCU films.

I'm curious when we'll start to see a downward trend for Marvel and the quality of their films.

Eventually Marvel won’t be able to top themselves, and then even being good won’t be enough to sustain current interest levels. Like if the big bad for Phase 4 can’t top Thanos, it’s gonna decline regardless of if it’s still technically a well received movie.

You are thinking too small. It doesn't need to be a big bad to beat Thanos. They really only have to create a story that ends in Avengers vs X-Men or any other major comic book story arc, and that movie will be absolutely massive.

The big bad for Phase 4 will be Galactus.

Technically, Thanos was a garbage villain they chose originally. He wasn't even in our Top 32 of best comic book villains.

They have plenty of villains they can use. Galactus, Doctor Doom, etc etc etc

Thanos was the best of the leftover villains after Marvel sold all their rights to Fox and Sony before they became MCU.

Now that they acquired Fox. Their tier 1 villains (Dr. Doom, Magneto, Galactus) are back in the fold. This will not be an issue.

People continue to underestimate Marvel. No one knew about Guardians of the Galaxy until it broke out. Just because you aren't aware of it, isn't a reason to discount.

But it broke out because it caught lightning in a bottle with the cast and the "new! shiny!" look of the film.

Not saying their upcoming films can't, but it's not easy. And they're not going to keep this pace up forever (I think).

Forever is a big difference between their upcoming schedule though.

People also didn't know Ant-Man...both were hits
People also didn't know Dr. Strange (though more than Ant-Man)...was a hit

At this point, there has yet to be a failure from MCU (minus maybe the Incredible Hulk)...so to expect it because you don't recognize the hero is a silly conclusion to come to.

I don't think anyone is calling for any of their upcoming slate to be failures. And if you're going to consider Ant-Man to be a hit, then they'll have hits until the end of time.

Ant Man - 180 Dom / 519 WW
Ant Man and the Wasp - 216 Dom/ 622 WW

That would rank them as the 8th and 9th biggest movies this year...for a movie about a completely unknown super hero just 5 years ago.

Blockbuster hit? No...A hit? Definitely.

I'm specifically talking about the first, which cost $130 mil, pre-marketing.

Again, if you're using that as their bar for a "hit" then we're making different arguments.

Ant-Man’s gross was fine, considering all the behind the scenes drama and meh reception to Age of Ultron. AM&TW should have made like $50M more though. So yeah, Shangi-Chi and Eternals have a steep hill ahead of them. But again, we don’t know what these films will be like or if any other MCU characters will be involved.

I am surprised I’m the only one who thinks going “horror” will make Strange blow up even more than he was already set to. It will be the perfect date movie.

Hey, I'm predicting $350+ for Strange 2. Though I hate that they're going to be tying it in to their Disney+ Wanda show? Hate. Hate. Hate.
