Re: Japan Box Office: Aladdin Admission Tracking (Sat.)
Endgame, yes, it's already beaten it for the day.
Beauty and the Beast, maybe (probably). Beauty and the Beast was very strong after 8PM (late-night showings are discounted in Japan and it really benefited from this), and it and Aladdin are pretty close coming up on the 9PM hour, with Aladdin up a bit. I'll have the 9PM update, the last one before the final results, up shortly.
One fact that I may have overlooked is that Aladdin was Disney's highest-grossing animated film of the 90s. That could be playing a role here since Aladdin's morning sales are rather low, indicating it's not attracting many families/children; while its evening business is very strong, indicating it's bringing in a significant adult crowd.

Re: Japan Box Office: Aladdin Admission Tracking (Sat.)
What does Aladdin's success mean for the rest of the competition and how has Godzilla been holding up? King of the Monsters isn't doing too hot on the domestic front. Also, this will probably be a long shot, but do you have any financial information (or any info at all) on Gamera: Chiisaki yusha-tachi (2006)? According to Box Office Mojo it only made $2.6 million during its theatrical run.

Re: Japan Box Office: Aladdin Admission Tracking (Sat.)
fiery_cockatrice wrote: What does Aladdin's success mean for the rest of the competition and how has Godzilla been holding up? King of the Monsters isn't doing too hot on the domestic front. Also, this will probably be a long shot, but do you have any financial information (or any info at all) on Gamera: Chiisaki yusha-tachi (2006)? According to Box Office Mojo it only made $2.6 million during its theatrical run. Now that I'm home... Generally, big openers help holdovers due to spillover. Screen/showtime cuts can be an issue for holdovers when a big film (or films) debuts, but this usually only harms films that have been in release for more than a month and have been holding onto a lot of screen/showtimes due to little competition. Everything looks down considerably versus last Saturday, and while they are down a lot in admissions, that won't be the case in revenue. Last Saturday was a national discount day which greatly inflates admissions, while greatly lowering revenue. How much this affects a film depends on its demographics, but most films are typically affected between 10-15%. So if a film is down 60% in admissions from last Saturday, it's probably down a more reasonable 45-50% in revenue. I'll check on Gamera for you tomorrow.

Re: Japan Box Office: Aladdin Admission Tracking (Sun.)
Amazing numbers for Aladdin! It looks like it will have a higher opening than Beauty and the Beast, which I was not expecting even on the optimistic side.

Re: Japan Box Office: Biggest June Opening Weekends
Corpse wrote: I forgot to post this updated list on Monday. Godzilla: King of the Monsters achieved the fourth biggest opening weekend for the month of June, and the biggest opening in June in 11 years.
Biggest June Opening Weekends (1997-)
¥2.223 billion ($18.7 million) / 1,486,743 - The Matrix Reloaded (2003) ¥1.871 billion ($17.3 million) / 1,469,755 - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) ¥1.005 billion ($9.6 million) / 805,350 - Boys Over Flower: Final (2008) ¥676.9 million ($6.3 million) / 479,000 - Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) ¥624.2 million ($5.2 million) / 416,632 - Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (2003) ¥603.5 million ($4.9 million) / 447,144 - Live Free or Die Hard (2007) ¥592.1 million ($6.1 million) / 461,866 - Terminator Salvation (2009) ¥580.9 million ($7.4 million) / 426,604 - The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) ¥562.6 million ($5.8 million) / 439,993 - Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009) ¥512.2 million ($5.3 million) / 354,852 - Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance (2009) ¥506.2 million ($4.8 million) / 369,119 - The Magic Hour (2008) ¥499.3 million ($4.5 million) / 375,293 - Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) ¥444.8 million ($4.1 million) / 349,950 - Shoplifters (2018) ¥432.0 million ($3.8 million) / 320,000 - Trick 2 (2006) ¥412.9 million ($3.4 million) / 299,000 - 300 (2007) ¥408.8 million ($3.6 million) / 308,600 - Death Note (2006) ¥400.2 million ($3.3 million) / 251,811 - Love Live! The School Idol Movie (2015)
I rarely have to update the June Opening Weekend List (June is one of the weakest months for the box-office in Japan) but this year's has a number of films that could join Godzilla, so I expect to be updating it one or two more times this year. Interestingly though, despite June being a weak month, it's home to the film with the biggest opening weekend of all-time -- The Matrix Reloaded.

Re: Japan Box Office: Biggest Modern Opening Weekends
Excellent for Aladdin, and an incredible debut for the month of June (it'll be the third biggest ever, and the biggest in 15 years).
I'm estimating a debut of ¥1,140,000,000 ($10.5 million) on 780,000 admissions, and a 3-day total of ¥1,400,000,000 ($12.9 million) on 965,000 admissions. It'll become the 43rd film to open above the ¥1 billion milestone.
This opening should allow it to reach a minimum of ¥7.5 billion ($70 million), and that's only if it receives bad WOM (which looks unlikely, audience scores are good) and the July competition hits it really hard. A more realistic finish will be around ¥9 billion ($80 million+). ¥10 billion ($90 million+) is also possible, but it'll require great WOM and some of the July films to disappoint (resulting in it not losing as many screens/showtimes).
Biggest Modern Opening Weekends (2008-) [REVENUE] Modern Rank (All-Time Rank) 01 (09) ¥1,628,893,000 - Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! The fantasy adventure starring Will Smith and Mena Massoud scored the best debut of a Western film in Japan for the year-to-date on $12.9m over three days, which also earned the distinction of being the second highest ever opening weekend for a Disney live-action title (excluding the Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm franchises) behind Alice In Wonderland. https://www.screendaily.com/box-office/ ... 35.article

So there is a chance of a ¥10 billion film even before Weathering with You. Incredible.

But... they kind of forgot the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise in their claim there. Pirates 2, 3, and 4 had bigger openings (in JPY and USD, both 2-day and 3-day).

That's certainly doable, but it's a bit tough for an early June release. Audience scores are good though (4/5 averages), and the box-office doesn't really get crowded from now until mid/late-July, so it does have a solid month+ (5 weeks) in release to make some serious bank. If it does miss ¥10 billion, a total of ¥9 billion ($80 million+) is still pretty likely and incredible too.

Wow. Japan has fully embraced these live-action remakes of the Disney Renaissance films. I guess the animated versions made strong impressions back in the 1990s? And do you have any idea about how Godzilla will finish in the market or info on Gamera?
