Re: Ma
MA
For me this was a classic example of a great trailer made for a bleh movie, so whatever company made that trailer needs more work because they got me to buy a ticket. I was hoping to get something with more scares, more gore and a more menacing Octavia Spencer. They take forever to build this up and then rush anything gory and scary in the last 20 minutes. It's only 99 minutes. All the teens survived. What! How is that even possible in a horror well apparently this was a fake horror film. Now, Octavia was good in the role. I did like her performance overall but it's not memorable and the movie itself just isn't that good, scary or gory. There was a moment of going outrageous but they passed on it. Such a disappointing effort to me. I did like the music in the film.

Re: Ma
Ya, Octavia Spencer is really good. The main chick was better in Booksmart than here, kinda boring.
Overall it's entertaining and trashy, just as you would expect.

Re: Ma
As evidenced by the dreadful The Girl on the Train and this only modestly superior film, director Tate Taylor does not have a strong command of the suspense genre. There is a degree of intrigue to Octavia Spencer's performance, a sinister twist on her irascible Southern-charm screen presence, but the film in general is so poorly paced and almost bizarrely devoid of menace or dread. It spins its wheels for a long time, trading largely on the titular character's more-irritating-than-scary faux pas and overly schematic flashes of her past. Then it unconvincingly dials the violence to eleven in the last 10 or so minutes, climaxing with a scene of oddly specific Jigsaw-lite tortures.
