Quote:
Pokémon Detective Pikachu is a fantasy mystery directed by Rob Letterman, who co-wrote the screenplay with Dan Hernandez, Benji Samit and Derek Connolly from a story by Hernandez, Samit and Nicole Perlman. Based on the 2016 video game Detective Pikachu, the film is a Japanese-American joint venture produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, Legendary Pictures and The Pokémon Company, in association with Toho Co., Ltd. It is the first live-action/animated film in the Pokémon franchise, and represents a separate continuity from the mainline video games and anime series.

The film stars Ryan Reynolds as the voice and facial motion capture of the titular character, with Justice Smith, Kathryn Newton, Suki Waterhouse, Omar Chaparro, Chris Geere, Ken Watanabe and Bill Nighy in live-action roles.

I was a little underwhelmed with this being a huge Pokemon fan but I still enjoyed it. If you don't give a crap about Pokemon I'm not sure how much you'll get out of it but I thought the look of the Pokemon was impressive.

Yes. Its very impressive visually but the story and the surprises are weak. The journey to find clues is very subjective but for me that was the weakest link and the villian was obvious for the get go.

I enjoyed parts of it but its very forgettable

Spoiler: show
How did Justice Smith not recognize his father's voice? I know there are interracial couples and we never get to know the mother but Justice Smith hardly looks like Reynold's son.

Excellent use of pokemon in this movie. I really enjoyed being in this Poketopia city for awhile and the first act of the movie kinda gave me the same feelings as the game. For the most part it plays as an early 90s family movie that was inspired by Blade Runner though.

The whole thing seems kind of hollow though. I popped for Pikachu v Mewtwo at the end, but otherwise the action scenes weren't very remarkable. And while the neon-noir style is an interesting way to tell the story, it rarely results in anything great outside of the Mr. Mime interrogation scene in the trailers. And the end went for huge sentimentality with that twist but wound up making the whole movie even more pointless?

So as a big Pokemon fan I was satisfied with the first live action rendering of these adorable creatures. If the box office was better it would have set up a very fun world to come back to every few years. The story of Detective Pikachu itself feels much like the actual game though, a spin off.

Yeah I enjoyed this as well. The script, the story and the writing are pretty weak, but seeing the Pokemon finally brought to life on the bigscreen was definitely enough to keep me engaged for the most part. I can completely see non fans not caring much for it though which is something I hope they are able to fix in a sequel. I really liked the interactions between Reynolds and Smith in this, and I was honestly surprised by how genuinely emotional some of the more dramatic scenes were.

While no epic, it certainly captured the magic of Pokémon, but yeah, it was kinda corny at times, if even genuinely emotional at times too.

I might have misinterpreted the ending, but not sure. The way it played to me was that Mewtwo was so grateful for their help, he not only brought Reynolds back to life, but sent the two back in time to before their rift. That train scene had been brought up several times. A review I just read saw it as taking place in the future though, at a point where Reynolds resurrection is no longer something of note. I guess that makes a bit more sense, though I still think it would have been better to just keep him as Pikachu. Not that it matters since we probably won’t get a direct sequel.

So... what became of the island-sized Torterra? Kinda seems like a major safety concern!

The film was fine. "Hollow" is a good word to describe it though. C+.

The look and design of the Pokemon is incredible. Hope it gets a visual effects Oscar nom.

This is still WB's biggest film of the year lol hoping for a sequel.

That’s a little misleading, they’re the number 2 studio after Disney this year, with It and Joker and probably a couple smaller hits like Dr. Sleep, the kitchen, etc

Disappointing. The special effects were good but the world building and plot were weak.
