Corpse -- could you add bohemian rhapsody's numbers even it it does not make top 10 for any of the reported periods? As this has turned into a major box office hit overthere (too)
Many thanks!

Well, in a very, very bizarre twist, Bumblebee actually increased substantially on Friday and took the #2 spot! It was the only film in the top 10, or near it, to have a bigger Friday than Thursday (a national holiday...). I don't know how to explain this. :P

Friday Estimates will be posted soon, followed by the Weekend Forecast later this evening.

Possibly the 80's theme resonated with the older population of Japan coupled with decent reviews??

Could it simply be because Bumblebee appeared to have only previews on Thursday? It had just 143k showings at usual locations on Thursday, but on Friday had almost 356k, more than double. Also Saturday and Sunday have well over 300k showings also.

Also how does it relate to Premium formats? Does Bumblebee get those or does Captain Marvel still have them? And if Bumblebee gets them, did it have them on Thursday?

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Spring Break 2019
Bumblebee definitely had more than just previews on Thursday. It was playing at just as many locations, but it did receive a large boost in showings due to taking some of the premium format showings away from Captain Marvel. They're sharing the premium formats now.

And sorry for no Weekend Forecast as I said I would do yesterday. I've been recovering from the flu, and just decided to relax all yesterday evening.

As for the weekend: Doraemon is going to repeat for a fourth-consecutive week atop the weekend box-office; Bumblebee, in its debut, and Captain Marvel, in its second weekend, are neck-and-neck for the #2 and #3 spots; Tonde Saitama won't be far behind in 4th thanks to another great hold; and 5th is favoring Precure Miracle Universe in its second weekend, though Green Book could hold well enough to take the position. Prince of Legend is the only other film opening in the top 10 this weekend, and looks to settle for a disappointing 7th or 8th place debut.

Will the arrest of Olaf's voice actor in Japan affect the sequel at all? I read that all Frozen merchandise has been pulled in Japan.

Kind of a bad image surrounding the family friendly film now.

If people think America "over-reacts" when a scandal or criminal act, etc., surrounds a celebrity, they should just look to Japan in these instances. Because of Pierre's cocaine possession charges, just about everything he's been involved in is being eradicated. By the end of the year, well before then actually, he won't be linked to Frozen at all. Disney has pulled the DVD/Blu-Ray (and likely won't distribute any more until they produce new copies with a voice replacement), Square Enix is patching Kingdom Hearts III to exclude his voice (even finding a replacement!), and any or all merchandise that may have his name printed on it, his image, or even his voice, will no longer be available.

That said... I don't think it'll harm Frozen 2 since this has happened well ahead of its release so that he won't be apart of it in any capacity by the time it hits theaters.

01 (01) ¥307,000,000 ($2.8 million), -30%, ¥2,900,000,000 ($26.1 million), Doraemon: Nobita's Chronicle of Moon Exploration (Toho) WK4

06 (03) ¥x96,000,000 ($865,000), -29%, ¥1,390,000,000 ($12.5 million), Green Book (Gaga) WK4
07 (05) ¥x90,000,000 ($815,000), -37%, ¥505,000,000 ($4.5 million), You Shine in Moonlight (Toho) WK2
08 (---) ¥x65,000,000 ($590,000), 0, ¥175,000,000 ($1.6 million), Prince of Legend (Toho) NEW
09 (07) ¥x54,000,000 ($490,000), -42%, ¥655,000,000 ($5.9 million), Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Sony) WK3
10 (08) ¥x53,000,000 ($760,000), -40%, ¥275,000,000 ($2.5 million), Osomatsu-san: The Movie (Shochiku) WK2

>Doraemon: Nobita's Chronicle of Moon Exploration repeats atop the weekend box-office for a fourth-consecutive weekend, with an estimated weekend high enough to achieve the second biggest fourth weekend in the franchise (behind last year's film), as well as the second highest cumulative total after four wees (also behind last year's film). Nothing has changed the films' trajectory, and it's still aiming for a total between ¥4.5-5.0 billion ($40-45 million).

>Bumblebee and Captain Marvel are in a too-close-to-call race for second place. Bumblebee largely disappointed in its debut, coming in nearly 60% below the opening weekend for Transformers: The Last Knight, but such a decline shouldn't have been too unexpected. The Transformers franchise exhausted itself in the market, and the spin-off factor here didn't do it any favors.

>Captain Marvel delivered a strong debut last week, but it's proved to be very, very frontloaded, even by the frontloaded standard for Marvel/DC films. If it doesn't manage to stabilize, even by just a bit, it'll end up in a struggle reaching the ¥2 billion milestone, much less the ¥2.5 billion mark it should be aiming for.

>Bohemian Rhapsody finally fell out of the top 10, but it took twenty weeks in release before doing so. I have it coming in 13th place over the weekend following a good ~25% decline for around ¥40 million ($360,000), bringing its total up to ~¥12.62 billion ($113.2 million). I'll continue to track it for as long as possible.

Thank you for the explanation. So if this had happened during the theatrical release of the movie, it would have immediately been pulled from all theaters. I imagine this would have been disastrous for the box office unless an alternate dubbed version could be produced ASAP.

Heh, I never even thought about the possibility of that happening during the theatrical release. :O I imagine the dubbed version would have indeed been pulled from theaters.

>Doraemon: Nobita's Chronicle of Moon Exploration repeats atop the weekend box-office for a fourth-consecutive weekend, and in the process achieved the second biggest fourth weekend in the franchise (behind last year's film), as well as the second highest cumulative total after four weeks (also behind last year's film). Nothing has changed the films' trajectory, and it's still aiming for a total between ¥4.5-5.0 billion ($40-45 million).

>Captain Marvel got off to a good start last weekend, but it's displaying heavy frontloading, and experiences one of the biggest second weekend declines among all Marvel/DC films... It's going to end up struggling to reach the ¥2 billion ($20 million) milestone unless it surprises over Spring Break and stabilizes.

>Tonde Saitama earns another strong hold over its fifth weekend of release, and in terms of admissions, it actually rose to second place(!) with 127,000 ticket sold. The surprise, soon to be hit, starring Gackt is quickly approaching a multiplier of 10, and will pretty easily exceed the ¥3 billion ($27 million+) milestone.

>Bumblebee debuts in a disappointing fourth place, selling a mediocre, borderline poor, 120,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 724 screens, and reaching 186,566 admissions since opening on Thursday. This opening is over 60% below that of Transformers: The Last Knight. Look for this spin-off to barely reach the ¥1 billion ($10 million) milestone.

>Prince of Legend's weekend gross remains an estimate, but its four-day cumulative total is an actual. It sold 136,093 admissions since Thursday across 311 screens.

>Bohemian Rhapsody finally fell out of the top 10, but it took twenty weeks in release before doing so. Coming in twelfth place in its twentieth-weekend of release, the phenomenon smash has exceeded 9.1 million admissions, and will soon overtake Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace to become the 17th highest grossing film of all-time in the market.

Is it just me or this year Japan boxoffice seem to release actual number very slow and many films are still estimated on Wednesday.

It is a nice poster.

Aladdin is a bit of a wildcard. In Japan, the Disney live-action re-tellings have been all over the place at the box-office, so there isn't a reliable range to just place any upcoming film in, really.

Aladdin's prospects are probably higher than the other films this year since it stars Will Smith (not as big of a draw as he used to be, but still a reliable name), and seems to have kept the songs in the film. Johnny Depp would have been a better choice for the market. The June 7th release date is pretty bad though, and could indicate Disney isn't confident in its appeal in the market. Online interest is solid at best at the moment, and doesn't suggest to me we'll see a big performance.
