Post The Walking Dead/Fear the Walking Dead

There's the long, drawn-out Season 8 trailer from SDCC. It started out well, but quickly fell apart into a silly, action movie sequel style trailer. I know I've been criticizing this show since Season 2, but I feel when the show resolves the Negan storyline and tries to continue beyond that, I may give up. No commitments, but it feels like they should resolve Negan this season and move towards an ending.

Ridiculous quotes from producers about the show going to Season 12 and beyond make me fear that there isn't an ending in sight. I don't care that the comics are still going. The series should have an end game planned.

And still I'll be there in October for the premiere. Any TWD fans that aren't watching FearTWD should give it a try. It's been solid in its third season.

Season 8 premieres Sunday.

More importantly, Fear had an exceptional finale. Despite the fact that its season is still too long (they had ten episodes of story stretched into 16, much like TWD), I feel it takes bigger risks than the main series. And it doesn't get a ton of credit for that.

The premiere was incredibly underwhelming, even by TWD standards. The flash forwards are awful. Are they real? I'm never a fan of putting any characters' future into certainty, so I hope they aren't real, but everything suggests they are.

For a 100th episode, it was basically a TWD Greatest Hits. Explosions, hordes of walkers, and no one getting killed off when someone should have caught a bullet.

On the plus side, I think Xander Berkeley's Gregory is my current favorite character. I love that there's an opportunistic slimeball in the mix.

Am I the only person dumb enough to stay with TWD? This week's episode was awful. It was all action and zero story. I wasn't even sure what was going on. Then they brought back a character I didn't remember and expected me to be... shocked?

Ratings also hit a major low, a number it hasn't seen since Season 2. Even if they kept up with these numbers, that's alarming. But they're only going to keep dropping. I really think it's time the producers stop thinking they're invincible and start crafting an ending that can successfully close the door on the series without thinking they need to go forever because the comic is ongoing.

I didn’t like the first and there are few TWD episodes I don’t like, but really liked the 2nd.

I'm three episodes in and I don't really love where things are going. All the gunfire doesn't work so well when I'm watching people and I have no idea whose side their on.

Still love Xander Berkeley's Gregory. He does so well playing a sleazy opportunist.

Pretty significant moment.
Spoiler: show
I would be lying if I didn't say a small part of me thinks Scott M. Gimple wrote that a non-walker bit Carl, or that he would somehow survive, but all signs point to Carl being dead in the next episode, which is pretty shocking. I had been spoiled on it this morning, but it was still a shock. I don't think the way they revealed it all was as shocking as previous deaths (Chandler Riggs had a lot of moments in this episode, plus we were prepped for something big happening), but the death itself is probably the most significant, maybe only matched by Lori's, in terms of direct impact on the main characters.

Post Re: The Walking Dead: Season 8
I feel like when fans asked for more action on the show, the writers took it as literal action. Gunfire, explosions, all the usual tropes of the genre. Problem is, it's a show about people living through a zombie apocalypse. The constant gunfire is exhausting. The world is essentially over, guns and bullets should be dying out. It's like a video game where they have the "unlimited ammo" option turned on. It's fun for a little while, but incredibly stale before long.

One of the things I enjoyed previously was when they slowed things down and focused on a smaller character for an episode. That hasn't happened in a while. And I'm afraid it isn't going to get any better.

The positives remain with Negan and any interactions with him and Rick.

I feel like will be the final transition of the show, and people will hate that even more. I think the biggest problem is that the show has always been character focused, but pretty much all the characters are dead now. So it of course would feel more plot focused.

I'd like to see Season 8 end on the truce. 9 being about building Carl's vision, and 10 just trying to maintain it. That would make this an extremely satisfying series.

My Biggest hope (the series ends and the reason Rick is in a bed is he wakes up in the hospital after 10 years in a coma, Lori, Carl, Shane, and everyone one else were Doctors or Nurses that had waited on him) I think the Walking Dead would be perfect for a Dorothy ending Moment.

And then, The Zombie Apocalypse starts and (Leading to a possible spinoff)

Post Re: The Walking Dead: Season 8
Only a few weeks after Season 8 ended and my memories of what happened are foggy. I just remember bits and pieces.

Meanwhile, anyone watching Fear the Walking Dead? (Comments in spoilers)

Spoiler: show
After introducing several new characters and a key Walking Dead veteran, the show made good on its early season shocker (Travis was offed in episode 2 last year) by killing off Nick. Not sure how to feel about it. He's been probably the most notable character of the series, along with Madison and Alicia. Their dynamic was interesting to watch. Now that we're down another Clark family member, I hope the series doesn't lose what it had going for it.

But the shock of it was better than anything Walking Dead has offered in a few years, since Negan's one-two swing of Abraham and Glenn. I knew something had to be coming, but I wasn't expecting it to be Nick.

Overall, I find Fear way more interesting. I don't usually go for the color-draining to make things look more post-apocalyptic, but it also doubles as a way to show the present day, against the colorful flashbacks. And I'm digging the new characters. Garret Dillahunt and Maggie Grace are especially solid so far, and Lennie James has transitioned well from Walking Dead.

So, I'm a big fan of Fear. I think last season was better than anything TWD has done as a whole season. And this season has been very interesting so far. I was never a huge Morgan fan, but he's actually getting decent material so far. And I've always loved Garret Dillahunt, so I'm curious if they dive more into his backstory.

Spoiler: show
But holy shit was I shocked they killed Nick. I loved his character. I know he asked to be killed off, but man... I can't imagine there will be too many more flashbacks, because those would have to show him.

But I don't think this season can top last season. It had some all time moments.

Andrew Lincoln is supposedly leaving the show after Season 9.

Which... would probably end this show. You could maybe squeeze a 10th season out, but I can't imagine the ratings will be half of what they will be during S9.

That's the end. You don't have a show without Rick Grimes. Having characters cross over from Fear to take over, in the same way Morgan went to Fear, will not save the show. Having Daryl take the leadership role will not save the show. Having Negan change to being a good guy anti-hero will not save the show. Andrew Lincoln is one of the main reasons I've stayed with the show. It is foolish to think the show will survive without him.

YUP. (though I think they still have something real good with Fear, hell, they could kill off Madison at some point and they'll be fine)

The fourth season of Fear is better than any season of either show so far. This is the zombie survival show that the parent series should have been all along. Imagine crafting an entire episode where the characters try to survive a horde of walkers. It's actually funny watching previews for the 9th season of TWD (billed as "Rick Grimes' Final Episodes", groan) that showcases all these characters. TWD looks like it's character-driven, but it really isn't. Fear is how to combine interesting characters with the horrors of this new world. It feels fresh.

It's just so much of a shame that Fear will live in the shadow of TWD. It's so much better.

Post Re: The Walking Dead/Fear the Walking Dead
Fear the Walking Dead ended its solid fourth season with a great finale... right up to the last ten minutes. I feel like that was written as a potential series finale, if the show didn't get picked up. Could have killed off everyone except Morgan and shipped him back to the main show. But I'll forgive the lackluster ending because the whole season is probably the best season of either show. My only complaint is that the main character is now Morgan, when it should be Alicia.

Meanwhile, the premiere of The Walking Dead was typically overstuffed and mediocre. And the ending would work, if they hadn't done similar things before, with Rick taking the immoral approach to punishment, usually with someone trying to scold him for such savagery. But my biggest issue remains the same: there are way too many characters. When the kid died, I couldn't remember if he had been on the show before or not. I don't think that should be an issue. And the romances are all cringe-worthy and feel like they're all written by 13 year old girls. Ezekiel and Carol? Okay. Give them some sort of chemistry. There is zero chemistry with any TWD couples. Only Maggie and Glenn worked, and even that was rocky at first.

Of course I keep watching. They've unfortunately hooked me with their promise of Rick Grimes' Final Episodes and I want to see how this plays out. But I don't have much hope.

Add Jadis (Anne?) and Gabriel to this never-ending list. Every TWD romance starts the same way. Two characters talk to each other, smile foolishly like 13-year-olds, and make out.

This has so far been an agonizing road to Rick Grimes' Final Episodes. At this point, once the midseason finale airs, that may be it for me. I never thought I could stop watching this show, but I don't see where it goes where I'll be interested. Daryl, Carol and Michonne are not strong enough to lead the show in Rick's absence.

On the very minor plus side, I liked Jadis seeing something in the sky. It felt like a hint of some sort of resolution to the show, which they have to be considering now that ratings have fallen to Season 1 levels.

Post Re: The Walking Dead/Fear the Walking Dead
So...
Spoiler: show
the show did a bit of a copout on Rick Grimes. Of course all the build-up to his final episodes on The Walking Dead were just a setup for a series of AMC Original Films to continue his story. I think it's both frustrating and brilliant. I can't believe I didn't see this coming. Of course they couldn't kill off Rick Grimes. And with Scott M. Gimple taking over the Walking Dead franchise, I should have known they would just expand upon the universe.

He also mentioned new series, new ideas, etc etc. I want there to be closure, but it doesn't look like that's coming at any point. If there was mention of that, I'd be content. But it feels like the show is doubling down on just being an ongoing entity.

But the episode was definitely good, and I'm glad Rick is not only alive, but his story will continue. Television films are the best way to continue his story in an interesting way. And the time jump adds some new ideas for the show. They've bought some good will with me, I'll keep going for now.

Man. I don't know if I'm just optimistic, but this week's episode felt really, really good. Like they've made some solid progress in growing the show. Maybe losing Rick and Maggie was the best thing for the show. I love those two characters, but it opens the show up a bit. It adds dynamics the show desperately needed.

I also felt super emotional at Judith telling Michonne that the voices of Rick and Carl are fading from her memory. Something about that feels so gut-wrenching.

Of course, the bizarre romances continue, with Rosita and... Gabriel? He was already a part of an odd match. And I kind of feel like Eugene was about to profess his love to her at the end of the episode. That's a romantic pairing I find interesting, if it's played right. But I wish the show would ease off the relationships a bit, at least for certain characters.

The new characters are interesting. I like Magna. And I don't know much about The Whisperers, but their arrival feels much more fresh than the battle against Negan and the Saviors that has dominated the show since Season 6.

Post Re: The Walking Dead/Fear the Walking Dead
The Whisperers introduction into the series provided one of the best scary moments of the series. It felt genuinely unnerving to see a walker duck an attack like that, only to reveal it's a living person wearing a walker disguise. I like the potential here.

I feel bad for Tom Payne and Jesus. The character was so horribly underused. He seemed to be such a significant addition in Season 6, but I don't think they ever realized his potential. His look, the nickname, the whole persona. A waste. And it truly feels like we don't get any significant departures anymore unless someone leaves the show and not the character, or the actor has decided they want to get off the show, as was the case with Payne.

This episode was a lot of filler, but I think it's important to have villain context. But so far the Whisperers have provided some truly unnerving moments. And as long as they're around, I'm going to be nervous every time a walker is on the screen.

I like the Whisperers. They're definitely a solid set of villains. I feel like I always say this, but they'll need to off one or two major characters to really succeed as true baddies.

I like the Negan transformation so far. I hope it doesn't take as long to develop as it did to defeat him.

This season has been terrific. The last two episodes have just been excellent. And the final 10 minutes of last night were just... lord. I wonder how far into next season this story will go. I assume the end of the finale will have to have something to do with Negan being asked to help.

Spoiler: show
I know most people weren't a fan of Henry, especially with him kinda stealing Carl's storyline... but man that last shot was devastating. Probably more so because of the Daryl/Carol reaction than anything. Man...
