Post Re: Japan Box Office: Upcoming Release Schedule (Feb./Mar.)
How to Train Your Dragon 3 will not get a release in Japan despite Universal owning DreamWorks now? I thought with Boss Baby's success Toho-Towa would want to continue distributing DreamWorks' animated films.

Also, I think your list is missing Captain Marvel? The film's Japanese website announces a March 15 release date.

Will The Mule not get a release in Japan? Seems kind of odd considering they adore Clint..

I overlooked both of them. :zonks: The Mule is March 8th. Granted, neither of their websites have any theater listings yet, so they were easily overlooked. Both are included on the release schedule now.

The Boss Baby will almost certainly be the exception. The young sibling angle is very appealing to families and children in the market, so that definitely helped it gain interest before opening.

It's still possible that How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World gets a release, it just won't be any time in the near future. It's listed as a TBD 2019 release, though. But remember that The Boss Baby itself was released in Japan a full year after its release in the U.S.

Possible, but I don't see any domestic source with an actual release date. And while IMDb can be iffy with release dates sometimes, it's not listed there either.

I'll see if Dean DeBlois will provide any information about it to me. He's been graciously responsive to me in the past, and he worked very hard to get the second film a theatrical release in Japan, but it ended up falling through, unfortunately. I'll share any info I find out.

The film is receiving excellent reviews so far, unsurprisingly given Dean's palpable passion for this series, so that'll help once again on the recognition front.

Notes:
*Ongoing Franchise (sequels in development or announced)
*NO gross or admissions of a franchise film currently in release are added to the franchise totals.
*Consider most USD totals for older franchises (pre-2000) to be estimates.
*Godzilla's gross figure is a mix of actual and estimates.
*Godzilla's film count includes Toho productions only.
*No gross figure is available for the Otoko wa Tsurai yo franchise (maybe we'll finally get one when Yoji Yamada releases the 50th film, 24 years since the previous film, in the franchise this December).

Much needed update above, though it may be best to update this one around this time of year anyway since most new franchise films from the previous year have concluded their runs.

Anyway, there have been some big changes to this list compared to previous years:

1. I finally included the Godzilla franchise on the Top Grossing Films List. Its figure is an estimate, as is the case with most older franchises, and in this case, 12 of its 32 releases have had an actual gross released. For now, I'm leaving its USD figure blank. I'll have to do some research into the exchange rates before 1974, which I've rarely had to do before.

2. Dragon Ball, One Piece, and Crayon Shin-chan are also all included on the list for the first time. These are all long-running franchises that would have made the list (or been just shy) over the years, but there wasn't enough data available for me to consider them until now. Their totals on the Top Grossing Film List are largely accurate (USD totals remain rough figures), while their admissions are a mix of actual and estimated ticket sales.

3. A few minor changes have been made to the Star Wars numbers. I'm not sure where I messed up along the way, either adding a film too early or too soon (due to the recent December releases), but they're corrected now.

Fantastically huge for HP!

Should MCU be added? It seems it might just make top 15?

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Biggest Film Franchises (Yearly Update
The MCU is so broad, encompassing so many individual franchises, that I lean toward not including it. Sure, Fantastic Beasts is separate from Harry Potter, and The Hobbit separate from The Lord of the Rings, but they all occur within a contained setting and happen mostly in the same locations, etc..

But if anyone disagrees, and think the MCU should be added, voice your opinion. :) I'll add it if enough think it deserves a spot on the list.

The MCU would barely make the Top 15 with ¥32.42 billion ($315 million) [20 Films]. I'll have to add up the admissions later, but I know its admissions won't make the Top 15 since they're definitely below 25 million (probably 23/24 million).

And an interesting observation: The six Spider-Man films (not counting Into the Spider-Verse yet, it hasn't been released) almost match the entire MCU:

¥32.42 billion ($315 million) - MCU [20 Films]
¥30.42 billion ($283 million) - Spider-Man [6 Films]

That is an interesting fact about Spiderman and MCU :D Given that MCU is increasing in the market (very slowly) and that they'll continue to keep chugging movies for another 5+ years for sure it makes sense to add them in the list.

I'm wondering if Godzilla franchise include every film that has Godzilla appear in it. Like my hero academia also has Godzilla.

I think the MCU should be included in the list. You've included Star Wars, which I assume includes Solo and Rogue One. I don't see how that's different than anything from the MCU. It's all world-building.

Very interesting Top 10 this weekend. The #1 spot could realistically go to any of the Top 5 films. This is also a long three-day weekend (national holiday on Monday), so the inflated Sunday could paint an entirely different picture from Saturday's results.

>Aquaman is... probably the favorite to win the weekend, though it did come in second place on Friday. Its weekend pre-sales are also just 11% higher than Justice League's, and 16% lower than Wonder Woman's. Both comparisons suggest a debut around ¥225 million. I'm expecting a slightly higher number than that due to a slight increase in ticket sales, but I doubt it reaches ¥250 million.

>City Hunter actually won Friday by a small margin, besting Aquaman, but its weekend pre-sales are a little below Aquaman's and I expect some degree of frontloading. I'd be a little surprised if it ends up opening at #1, but it's certainly possible. And being an Aniplex release, it's probably safe to assume it'll have a high average ticket price.

>Then you have The Seven Conferences and Masquerade Hotel, the two holdovers that could spoil the chances of the openers debuting atop the box office. Both films are down more than expected in pre-sales versus last weekend, but holdovers tend to outperform pre-sale suggestions, so a 30% hold could be good enough for one of them to claim the #1 spot.

>And finally, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion is the biggest wild card and could surprise and debut at #1. Its pre-sales are well ahead of every other film, but it's barely playing wide (120 screens), so it's at a disadvantage there. However, this film is likely to have a very high average ticket price given its fanbase, so it wouldn't necessarily need match the others in ticket sales to actually claim the #1 position.

Words are that Broly in America has been affected by sexual harassment controversy by Broly's English voice actor. But $30 million is not bad at all (though it could go higher, like 32)

Corpse mentioned in his post of weekend forecast that it was national holiday on Monday. Not sure which one though.

All movies did much better than forecast, but the Aquaman took the biggest lead.

I'll have the Weekend Actuals & Chart Updated posted later this evening.

As pookpooi said, just about everything performed better than the forecast thanks to a very good Sunday. Sunday is usually inflated when Monday is a national holiday, and this past Sunday was a prime example of this effect.

Aquaman debuted at #1 in gross, while The Seven Conferences claimed its second weekend at #1 in admissions.

Do you know what happened with Mimorin today? Everything is down over 50% and the 2pm and 7pm reports didn't seem to happen?

Just an error in recording ticket sales for half of the day.
