Happy to see that Coco got to 5 billion after all. Guess those rankings from Eiga were correct.

I'm feeling confident that BR will be bigger than any 2019 movie.

Hey Corpse, I was wondering what you made of this because the grosses listed for the Dragon Ball movies differ somewhat from you gave on a previous page recently.

Are these actuals?

Very likely. I'll go back and rework them.

Weekend Actuals will be posted later this evening. I didn't really have an opportunity to post a Forecast or anything over the past few days, but it was a pretty good weekend (although Mary Poppins Returns disappointed), especially for this time of year.

Bonus:
12 (09) ¥x29,112,600 ($266,000), -38%, ¥3,891,863,300 ($35.1 million), Dragon Ball Super: Broly (Toei) WK8

>The Seven Conferences debuts atop the box office, selling 260,000 admissions over the weekend frame on 329 screens, and reaching 350,994 admissions sold since opening on Friday. This is a good debut, particularly for this time of year, and will give Toho another early hit this year. Expect a total north of ¥2 billion ($20 million).

>Masquerade Hotel fell a little harder than expected in its third weekend, but it's still a solid hold. It remains on course to to finish between ¥4-4.5 billion ($35-40 million+), making it a very early contender for the yearly Top 10.

>Bohemian Rhapsody holds very well again, unsurprisingly. Its thirteenth weekend ranks as the sixth biggest ever recorded. Its multiplier has now reached 30.98, making it the second highest known multiplier for a wide release, behind only Frozen (and it'll probably exceed it). I mostly believe it'll slowly decline (say 15-25% each week) for the remainder of its run, which puts it on course to finish between ¥12-13 billion ($110-120 million). However, if it wins any big awards at the Oscars, I could see going a little higher still.

>Snow Flowers delivers a solid opening for Warner Bros., selling 150,927 admissions over the weekend frame across 326 screens, and 230,012 tickets were sold since opening on Friday. Expect a total between ¥1-1.5 billion ($10-15 million).

>Mary Poppins Returns debuts in a disappointing fifth place, selling 139,000 admissions over the weekend frame on 654 screens, and 205,337 admissions since opening on Friday. This opening is well below the average for a musical, and after taking the Disney brand into consideration, it makes the debut even worse. Even if it manages great legs (will be tough since it'll be a huge target for screen/showtime cuts), it likely won't reach ¥1.5 billion ($15 million).

>Ralph Breaks the Internet continues to fall alarmingly fast, and any chance it had of still reaching the ¥4 billion milestone are gone now. It succeeded in outgrossing its predecessor, but will fall below the average mark for a major Disney/Pixar release in the market.

>And I'll give a mention to Dragon Ball Super: Broly since I know a few of you want to know about it. It continues to behave a expected at this point in its run, and it'll come down to the very end on whether or not it'll reach ¥4 billion. I have it finishing agonizingly close, at ¥3.97/3.98 billion, so it'll be decided by Toei and if they want to reach the milestone or not.

Any particular reason why Mary Poppins debuted so poorly? Weak reception or just not enough interest from the trailers? I guess Mary Poppins isn't a particularly well known character compared to English-speaking markets? Though I would have thought it being a musical would be enough. This opening is even lower than Into the Woods, another live-action Disney musical.

Thanks for still including Broly. So now it's about 7.3% ahead of Resurrection F at the same time so it's increased a bit more over last week.

If it can even finish just 7.3% ahead of Resurrection F's total that must be enough to pass ¥4 billion or are we expecting Broly to pull back further in its later run?

Broly continue to miss my projection to ¥4 billion (but not much)
New projection, if it reaches ¥3.93 billion (less than 31% drop per Monday-Sunday week) this Sunday it'll still has a good chance to cross the milestone. Right now it has 36% drop per Monday-Sunday week, and this rate is not gonna deliver.

Well Broly is ¥260 million up from where Resurrection F was at the same point in time.

As long as it can finish ¥260 million ahead of Resurrection F then that would be ¥4 billion exactly.

My Broly projection
WK09 3.925 billion
WK10 3.945 billion
WK11 3.960 billion (end tracking)
Final report 4 billion, hopefully...
RoF magically made 70 million increase between end track number and final report. Possibly from Blu-ray/DVD release celebration special screening?

Well, many films, especially higher grossing films, often remain in release for a long time (mostly in/around Tokyo), even after falling well off the charts. Once a film falls below 100 locations (typically the limited release threshold), tracking usually stops and you have to wait on the distributor to report an updated figure, which is common around the time of its home video release.

Your weekly projections look very likely. As I said, it'll come down to whether or not Toei has a reason for it to reach ¥4 billion. They were fine leaving Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods at ¥2.99 billion..., so we'll see.

I think its under-performance is certainly an indication that Mary Poppins was largely unknown.

Into the Woods did well because it had Johnny Depp and Meryl Streep. I'd also contribute its success to being a more "recent" property, and Stephen Sondheim is likely a known name due to Sweeney Todd's popularity.

I know Mary Poppins Returns also had Streep, but it was for one musical number and was hardly more than a cameo. And Depp, while he has a similarly small role in Into the Woods, he's arguably the biggest foreign draw in the market and generally boosts any film he's in, so there's a difference there.

I'm about to post the Live-Action Musical Box Office History in the market here soon.

Thanks for the list. As for your question, I think Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star Is Born should probably be left out as they are not musicals by the traditional definition (characters spontaneously break into song for no reason, music appears to be non-diagetic, etc).

I would follow this list from Box Office Mojo.

Do we have live action musicals from Japan? Maybe those could be added in the list as well but yeah I like your current list and musical dramas should be left separate from this list.

Not really. There are some, but none would rank on my charts to my knowledge. There are some animated-musicals that would make the list, certainly, but including them (and imported animated-musicals) isn't ideal. Maybe a separate list for them at some point in the future.

Makes sense. I kinda knew that musicals won't be big thing in Asian markets.
