Well that's interesting. According to Google, $1 = ¥113.8 at the time of writing.

So that would have been $67.6 million worldwide as of writing? Or $35.1 million outside of US. And that wouldn't be including the $1.6 million it made in China afterwards so that'd add to $69.2 million worldwide.

From everything I could ever gather it was at $63.2 million though without China.

So that's a bit of disparity of about $4 million unless that's mostly because of a difference in exchange rate.

Oh, I thought RF already finished screening worldwide at that date.
7.7 + China and Germany make that 7.9 billion yen!
I suspect it didn't cross 8 billion mark cause if it did Toei would announced about that.

Thanks for all the kind words, and welcome to the forum. :)

As for your question about Titanic: 16.83 million has always been the reported admissions for the film. The earliest known source for the figure that I am aware of comes from a Nausicaa.net article that sites information received from Kumagai Toru, a journalist for NHK (Japan's national broadcasting organization). Here is my saved archives headlines from September 2001 with the information.

Here is a more recent article from Cinema Today in 2014 when Frozen surpassed Titanic's admissions (again citing 16.83 million), and became the most attended imported film ever.

Now, why was its average ticket price so high? I don't know with certainty, but I can provide some reasons:

1) It's very likely the film skewed heavily adult, meaning it would have had a high average ticket price. Some adult-driven films can approach avg. ticket prices of ¥1,400, sometimes even breaking that mark, but that's still much lower than Titanic's ¥1,557. Reason 2 below may explain this though...

2) The general admission in Japan has been ¥1,500-1,800 for decades. Discounts weren't as prevalent back in 1997/1998 as they are these days, so perhaps most of its audience had no choice but to pay the general fee. The average ticket price in 1997 and 1998 was ¥1,259 and ¥1,264, respectively, which is much lower than both Titanic's and the general fee; however, both of those averages were new records at the time, and they wouldn't be matched or beat again until 2010. It seems likely to me that Titanic could have been the sole reason that 1997s and 1998s average ticket price records held for so long.

3) Given how the film became a huge phenomenon, I wouldn't be too surprised if it received some sort of premium screenings. Of course, there wasn't any 3D/IMAX or anything like that in 1997/1998, but there could have been some other methods used to boost its ticket prices, such as: giveaways (maybe a "My Heart Will Go On" single, or even a Heart of the Ocean necklace?), maybe some meet and greets with the Japanese dub cast, or possibly special ticket bundles, or packages, were available during the peak of its run. None of these seem likely, and I've never heard of anything like this regarding the film, but it does happen in the market.

Very interesting. The second point is kinda crazy, a single movie having a discernable impact on the national average ticket price is quite something.

Thanks to surprisingly strong North America opening, Broly is now $87 million WW. Expected Toei to announced ¥10 billion WW ($91 million) soon. And $100 million WW by next month is locked. Japan estimated is reported as $33.3 million but I'm not sure how this will revert back to yen currency.

Well outside of Japan and China what was the last anime movie to make this much money?

Broly has made about $54 million in other countries.

I'll have the Weekend Estimates up here shortly. In the meantime, Masquerade Hotel did well enough over the weekend that I want to include it on my list of top opening weekends of the past four years. It's nowhere near the top of that chart or anything, but it performed almost on par with some of the films at the bottom of the list. I'll have this list posted first.

>Masquerade Hotel debuts atop the box office in a big way, and if the estimate holds, it broke the January Opening Weekend Record that's held for 10 years. Directed by Masayuki Suzuki (best known for the incredibly popular Hero TV drama and its movies), the mystery murder case film likely sold close to 500,000 admissions over the weekend frame. This is an excellent start (a January record, possibly, as mentioned), and will likely result in a total between of ¥4.0-4.5 billion ($35-40 million).

The year has just begun, but this is already an early candidate to make the Yearly Top 10 if it can just do slightly better than average legs. Toho really, really needed this after a very poor Fall.

>Bohemian Rhapsody finally experiences its first real drop, and it came after almost three months of release! A decline was likely given how its performed since last Monday, and after the weekend pre-sales came in, but a drop close to 40% is harsher than expected. Still, its eleventh weekend is still the seventh biggest on record. Incredibly impressive. I'm expecting it to more or less perform like a regular film from this point forward, and expect it finish close to ¥12 billion ($110 million).

>Ralph Breaks the Internet also fell a bit harder than it should have, and with no holidays or other support at the box office until late March, it's going to make reaching the ¥4 billion milestone a lot more challenging than expected now. I think it'll get there, but it may be one of those films that stops being tracked less than ¥100 million shy of the mark.

>Dragon Ball Super: Broly likely surpassed Resurrection F to become the highest grossing film in the Dragon Ball franchise. Toei is likely to announce this ahead of tomorrow's actuals. Can it reach ¥4 billion? Maybe, but like Ralph 2, tracking could end just shy of the milestone.

>Touken Ranbu: The Movie ended up opening pretty close to the forecast, but its actual could vary, either high or low, a good bit tomorrow because I don't have a good comparison to predict its average ticket price.

>Glass likely missed the Top 10, debuting in 11th place.

So has the chance of Broly hitting ¥4 billion increased from the earlier 10% you gave it?

No, I still think it's a pretty slim chance. Its weekdays are likely to be less than half of what it earns on the weekend now, and the weekend drops probably won't stabilize. It can still reach ¥4 billion, but ¥3.9 billion is more realistic. In the end, it'll be one of those films we'll just have to be patient with to see if, or when, it reaches a certain milestone.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Estimates (New Jan. OW Record?
Masquerade Hotel's weekend actual was released, and it did indeed set a new January Opening Weekend Record (not in admissions though, where it ranks second). The Biggest January Opening Weekend list has been updated in my earlier post.

Bohemian Rhapsdody's numbers have also been released, and I'll be posting the lists related to it here soon.

The Weekend Actuals post will be up later this evening.

74 or 75 - Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) *Awaiting Announcement*
78 - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2004)

Note: Not enough data available for a few films that likely would make this list, primarily including: Titanic, Armageddon, Jurassic Park, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and Antarctica.

Bohemian Rhapsody will become the 32nd film in history to reach the ¥10 billion, uber-blockbuster milestone, on either Monday or Tuesday, its 74th or 75th day in release. I'm favoring Tuesday, its 75th day, to be the likely day. An announcement is likely in the next couple days.

And now that it's soon to exceed the ¥10 billion milestone, I'll begin posting the Top 100 highest grossing (and most attended) films again when it's official.

I know data for Titanic's opening weekend isn't verifiable, but I read somewhere that it's very likely it exceeded a x50 multiplier in Japan.

Whether it did or not, it almost certainly belongs at the top of that list.

Also Bohemian Rhapsody is as close to a Titanic-like run this decade has seen. It may also be the last we see that type of run for many many years.

I think multiplier wise BR has an edge but from sheer numbers perspective Frozen's run was insane and slightly better than BR because it operates on a higher range as almost challenged Spirited Away (it might have if not for the home media release).

Titanic was at #1 in Japan for 22 consecutive weekends (source : https://variety.com/1998/film/news/tita ... 117471046/) so its multiplier is probably the highest of all time.

>Masquerade Hotel debuts atop the box office, and set a new January Opening Weekend Record, a record that remained unbroken for ten years. Director Masayuki Suzuki's murder mystery sold an impressive 484,000 admissions over the weekend frame across 349 screens, and reached 614,450 tickets sold since opening on Friday. This is an excellent start, one that will likely result in a total between of ¥4.0-4.5 billion ($35-40 million). The year has just begun, but this is already an early candidate to make the Yearly Top 10 if it can just do slightly better than average legs.

>Bohemian Rhapsody finally experiences its first real drop, but it didn't come until after almost three months of release! A decline was likely given the pattern of its weekdays leading up to the weekend, but its eleventh weekend is still the seventh biggest on record. Incredibly impressive. I'm expecting it to more or less perform like a regular film from this point forward, and expect it finish close to ¥12 billion ($110 million). It became 2018's highest grossing film last weekend, and this weekend it became 2018's most attended film as well with 7.19 million admissions.

>Ralph Breaks the Internet isn't holding too well after the holidays, and is going to make reaching the ¥4 billion milestone fairly difficult after all. If it can reach ¥4 billion, it'll have achieved what's the standard total for the average Disney and/or Pixar film, but its legs will also be down versus nearly all of its studio predecessors.

>Dragon Ball Super: Broly has officially become the highest grossing film in the Dragon Ball franchise, surpassing the total of its predecessor, Resurrection F. The twentieth film in the franchise has also sold over 2.9 million admissions after 38 days in release. There's a chance it may reach the ¥4 billion milestone, but it'll probably come down to Toei making the decision to keep it playing long enough to get to the mark.

>Touken Ranbu: The Movie manages a solid fifth place debut, selling 86,286 admissions over the weekend on a barely wide 111 screens, and 133,360 admissions since opening on Friday.

>Taxi 5, a France import, debuted in eighth place selling 49,164 admissions over the weekend across 347 screens. Given the screen count, this isn't impressive in the slightest, but it's generally a good accomplishment when a French release makes the Top 10.
