You can probably add another $30 million, or more, to its nine week total from Japan. A total over $100 million is very likely now. The Golden Globe wins, and any other major award wins in the coming weeks, will help keep it going, and going, and going.

Amazing when the actual lands at 3.35

When you do something for long enough and with this amount of effort and dedication, it's quite amazing the results.

I think, regarding Japanese BO, if you wrote an AI to learn to predict what movies will do, even that would be less accurate than Corpse!

It's just years of being engrossed with these numbers. But thanks for the compliments. :) I'll have the weekend actuals, as well as last weekend's (as much as I can from that weekend), up later this evening.

Anyway, so... Bohemian Rhaosody won Best Picture and Best Actor at the Golden Globes, eh? Not that it needed any help whatsoever, but these wins will boost it even further. Everything has aligned for this film as it quickly approaches the all-time leggiest run on record.

Just out of curiosity but how did that live action Bleach movie do?

Not much. It's hard to get actual figures for films that gross under ¥1 billion, but the last number I tracked was barely above ¥500 million ($4.5 million or so). I think the four anime films all grossed more. Quite disappointing, but it probably wasn't going to do much higher than ¥1/1.5 billion anyway.

It just came way, way too late (arguably a decade late) to find success at the box office: The series peaked many years ago, the anime ended years ago, and the manga concluded a few years back.

Reviews were decent though, and from what I've heard, it's a solid adaptation of the early chapters.

Wow is that all? I'm sure the anime movies did better than that.

Anyway seeing as Broly is at ¥3.35 billion I was wondering where you stood at the percentage chance of it surpassing Resurrection F and ¥4 billion now because it was 90% and 50% before I think you said.

It's very likely to outgross Resurrection F (¥3.74 billion) still, probably a 90%+ chance, but I don't think it'll reach ¥4 billion due to the size of its drop this weekend (let's say a 10% chance). It's going to begin to drop quite fast, and become a big target for screen/showtime cuts moving forward.

Long awaited weekend numbers and chart updates will be posted in the next hour or two.

Do the U.S. film awards have much of an effect on the box office in Japan? Last year I expected a big boost for Coco after it won two major Oscars (Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song). However, it didn't really break out and finished just under the ¥5 billion milestone.

Looks like Bohemian Rhapsody is going to reach best multiplier very soon beating Frozen. It hasn't dropped below ¥300million or $3m in 9 weekends that would be great for many movies OW in the market. Just amazing stuffs.

It is Tuesday that's the bank holiday right? Because going by Mimorin the sales are at a fraction of yesterday.

I know the day has just started and all but even on the other bank holidays it got off to a fairly good start. I ain't never seen it this low.

They do, but it mainly benefits films that primarily target adult audiences. It can help animated films, but only in certain cases. Coco had a strong first month in release, so I do think it benefited a bit from all the acclaim and awards. And even if it missed ¥5 billion, it came very close to that mark, and outgrossed other Pixar films like Ratatouille, Wall-E, Inside Out, and Incredibles 2.

Next Monday (the 14th) is a national holiday. I mistakenly said that it was this week several weeks ago, before realizing the second Monday of January was actually the 14th.

I don't want to keep delaying these any longer, so here are all available numbers. Nearly everything is available for this past weekend, besides the actual for Love! Live Sunshine!!, but the majority of 12/29-30 is just an estimate. Therefore, the weekend % changes for 01/05-06 are technically estimates. The only official numbers released for the last weekend of December are the weekend grosses for the top 4 films (and they're rounded...), and the total (also rounded) for Bohemian Rhapsody. I'm doubtful that any more figures for the last weekend of Dec. will be released, but if they are, I'll update them in this post.

Having said all of that...

>Bohemian Rhapsody continues to have one of the best runs ever, and you could argue it's having the best run ever on record considering its running multiplier remains above every other film recorded (~2000-). Its ninth weekend is its first that's fallen below its opening weekend, but just barely (5% less), so it's still hard to project where the film may be headed, especially after its Golden Globe wins. A total above the ¥10 billion (~$90 million) uber-blockbuster milestone is 100% locked up, and I could see it reaching as high as ¥12 billion (~$110 million).

>Ralph Breaks the Internet has been performing well, and will outgross the original film in a week or so. It's on track for a total around ¥4 billion ($35 million+). This will be Walt Disney Animation's fourth-consecutive film to decline in the market, but it'll still be a good total that's the standard milestone for most imported animated films that don't breakout.

>Dragon Ball Super: Broly fell rather hard in its fourth weekend, but that's perhaps unsurprising since New Year gave it a pretty nice boost. Its four week total is 2.2% above its predecessor, Resurrection F, and I expect it'll remain ahead for the remainder of its run and become the highest grossing film in the franchise. Expect a total around ¥3.8 billion ($34/35 million).

>Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is still holding on well, and after seven weeks in release, is tracking just 9% behind the original. It has run very consistent with the first film, and should finish around ¥6.7 billion (~$60 million). If it can manage to crawl to ¥6.87 billion, it'll outgross Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1, but that'll be difficult. Regardless, the film performed very well in Japan.

>Kamen Rider Heisei Generations FOREVER, while as frontloaded as pretty much any other film in the long-running franchise, is on its way to becoming one of the highest grossing films in the series. I'll do some research in the coming weeks to see just how high it ranks.

Note: Since Bohemian Rhapsody and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald have earned more than 50% of their earnings after December 1st, they'll almost certainly be considered 2019 releases by Eiren (Motion Pictures Producers Association of Japan) given the box office year (Dec. 01-Nov. 30) rules and regulations. But for now, I'm keeping them on the 2018 charts until it's official.

How the mighty have fallen... At what point will they stop producing Yo-Kai Watch movies?

Hmm... I imagine they'll continue to do so until they fall below ¥1 billion on a regular basis. They'll make a profit around that figure at the box office, and the movies will help move additional merchandise and such as well. There's not really a reason to stop making them until then, really.

The weekly anime also continues to earn solid ratings, typically earning between a 2.5-3.0 household share, so that'll keep it afloat for some time. The ratings have dropped off compared to a few years ago, but they've held on surprisingly well in comparison to the severe decline in every other area.

I was looking back in this thread and noticed that Resurrection F had a final estimate of ¥3.67 billion by the time it fell off the charts.

But then some weeks or months later it turned out to be at $3.74 billion.

Does that mean that the movie had actually done better than what the actuals had said or did it just somewhere make an extra ¥70 million after it fell off the charts?

Movies will continue to making money even after fell off the chart as long as it's still showing in some cinema. Spirited Away fell off the chart at 28.4 billion at week 21, reported in newspaper at 29.5 billion at week 34, end of box-office tracking at 30.4 billion and its final revised number from studio is 30.8 billion!
