It's also hard to reconcile their desire to expand the fanbase with the decision to make what they did. From what I've seen, slow paced philosophical theatrical features aren't too popular upon release and become cult classics later. Blade Runner (and now its sequel) famously flopped and it's my understanding the 1995 Ghost in the Shell did not do too well either. Wikipedia claims it made $10 million in Japan on a $10 million budget. I cannot find numbers for Jih-Roh.

¥5 billion was always a pretty big stretch. Studios in Japan like to hype, to create excitement, for a film following a successful debut by projecting certain milestones. I'd say 1 in 5 films actually make the studio "projections" after opening. It's all a marketing ploy to grab headlines, and doesn't mean a film underperformed in any way.

Studios and Distributer in Thailand love to do this too! The problem is that we can't claim their projection wrong because they only ticket count for big cinema chain (and that number is used for Box Office report). For small, local cinema the distributer sold at absolute cost, and that hidden number usually go unreported.

Thanks for doing that update, it's interesting to see how they did.

What iwould the inflation be like for these movies? Would Resurrection F still be the most successful movie or it would be something like The Return of Cooler instead what with it being 23 years older?

Looks like Broly is doing better on the Thursday than on the Wednesday. I didn't think that was going to happen because the last two weeks Wednesday has been the better day.

There isn't much inflation in Japan.

Movie ticket prices saw steady, sometimes even huge gains every year from 1959-1980 (from ¥65 all the way up to ¥1,009). Ticket prices then became stagnant from about 1981-1991 (averaging ¥1,128). They increased slightly in 1992 (breaking ¥1,200 for the first time ever), but became stagnant again from 1993-2014 (averaging ¥1,249). In 2014, ticket prices were increased nationwide for the first time in 20 years, and the average has been around ¥1,300 since (4/5% higher than the decades old average).

It's very easy, and accurate, to compare films released from 1992-2014 due to how stagnant (or consistent) movie ticket prices were. And it's also pretty easy to compare films from as early as 1981 to today, too, by making a small adjustment.

If we're using Dragon Ball Z: The Return of Cooler, the average ticket price has increased 8.3% from 1992 to 2017, so you could increase its gross by that number from its total of ¥2.48 billion in 1992 to an inflated total of about ¥2.69 billion in 2017.

@ the Godzilla question before: how is/was the reaction to the trailers of Godzilla 2 - King of the Monsters? Here the reaction is quite good and I'm wondering how it's chances are in Japan. :ninja:

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Godzilla Box-Office History
I'm not really expecting too much from it. Probably a gross similar to the 2014 film, maybe slightly less. It has average online presence, at best, and I don't really believe there's a large audience that is too interested in Hollywood's new Godzilla films.

Godzilla, the 2014 film, did decently, but it dropped 43% compared to the 1998 film; and Toho's critcially-acclaimed Shin Godzilla did more than 2.5x its business just a couple years ago.

The inclusion of other iconic monsters (Mothra, in particular) might generate some interest, but it's not like Japanese audiences haven't seen them all together many times before, so... The designs, from what I can tell, look fine, but the Japanese are also quite critical when Hollywood adapts domestic material (the 2014 Godzilla design was described as "obese" or "western" by some) and it rarely works out.

The sequel also looks like a darker film, in both when everything is happening and its tone, and that usually doesn't play well in the market.

Godzilla Box-Office History

This doesn't include the recent animated trilogy. Official admissions (or earnings) were never released since they didn't gross very much, but they sold under 500,000 admissions each, so they'd rank at the bottom of the list if they'r ever added.

I thought today was going to be a weaker day because of no bank holidays but Broly looks like it might have made ¥100 million today. That's more than Monday to Wednesday.

Broly, since it doesn't skew too old, was mostly unaffected. The only films that would be affected are those primarily targeting adults since they had to return to work on Friday. Schools/Universities are out until Monday/Tuesday, so younger skewing films still benefited.

I'll have estimates out soon.

This upcoming weekend should see light drops right? I hope that Broly can do over ¥200 million this weekend.

What happened to the actuals? There hasn't been none for ages, I thought we'd get some because today wasn't a holiday but still nothing. I'd wonder if that meant we've gotta wait till Monday now but with another holiday on Tuesday we might not get any until after that at this rate.

The drops this weekend will probably be a bit all over the place. Typically, the first weekend of January (the post-New Year weekend) is very strong if it doesn't fall too late in the week. This year's is toward the end (5th/6th), but note very late, so I expect good holds, but I don't believe any film (besides maybe Bohemian Rhapsody) will increase. Adult films benefit the most this weekend, since it's usually the last couple days of break they have for many months. Younger skewing films generally hold well, but they're more inline with regular weekend holds.

And actuals weren't released on Monday/Tuesday because of New Year, and of course the next few days were holidays (bank holidays), so they wouldn't be out then either. Friday was the only day this week that they could have been released on, but they weren't. It's a Friday following the New Year break, so not really surprising.

It can take a week or two sometimes. This often occurs around the New Year and sometimes in mid-August during/after Obon Festival. Just gotta wait until everyone is back to their daily grind in the country.

Any actual on 29-30 December? KogyoTsushin already reported so I thought the actual was out. Look like Brolicious was better than (Corpse) estimated.

Oh, they did. :)

Half of the Top 10 is still missing numbers, so I'll wait before making an actual post (Bohemian Rhapsody and Ralph 2 were almost tied...). But I know bullza will ask, so Broly did ¥297 million ($2.7 million) last weekend, but its total hasn't been released yet.

Since they're in the same universe, how did the new Kong film last year do? And is there any hope for 2020's Kong vs Godzilla? Especially since the biggest film on that list is the 1962 version.

feasby007, my sources have Kong: Skull Island at about 1.34 million attendees and a gross of $17 million. But I'm sure Corpse can provide more accurate numbers.

¥297 million, a small tad from what Resurrection F did in its third weekend.

What I've noticed now is that Box Office Mojo has updated it's grosses for the weekend and for Broly the numbers they're using are based on the estimates that were given Sunday.

I didn't think they did it like that. I thought you get the stimates and then later the actuals but the grosses listed are just to match the estimates.

Thank you very much for the warm welcome and the help!

Toho Kingdom has the 9 million attendance figure and cites the self-published book "Age of the Gods" by Guy Mariner Tucker as its source. I thought it was odd for a film that allegedly did that well not to be listed here or have those numbers available in other places. The site notes two releases, its initial debut in 1961 and a 1974 reissue. But even if it took both releases to reach 9 million it still would make the Top 100 Highest-Grossing Films of All-Time chart.

One more question. Would you consider the anime Godzilla trilogy successful? The deal with Netflix probably covered whatever it cost to produce/market them and I know they were a limited release. But how did those films perform compared to other limited anime releases? Standard business or a disappointment even by those standards?

Saturday actually did even worse than Friday. Almost everything is down.

Screendaily is saying Broly did $1.6 million. I imagine that's just for Saturday and Sunday because it'd be too low if it included Friday.

So that's like ¥170-180 million for the weekend probably.

Looks about right.

I wasn't really interested in posting weekend estimates to mostly weekend estimates from last weekend, so tomorrow I'll have actuals for both weekends posted (I suspect a few numbers will still be unavailable from last week, though).

However, I am going to post the estimate for Bohemian Rhapsody. Its actual (rounded, anyway) was released last weekend, and it's having one of the greatest runs ever.
