NOTE: Cumulative Totals as of Monday, 12/24.

>Ralph Breaks the Internet comes in 33.5% ahead of the original Wreck-It Ralph, selling 350,373 admissions over the weekend across 468 screens. And since opening on Friday, it has sold an impressive 625,699 admissions over its first four days in release.

This is a good debut, no doubt, but it also comes with potentially troubling signs: It came in above Zootopia by 1%, avoiding to become Walt Disney Animation's lowest debut since the first Wreck-It Ralph, but it's incredibly unlikely that it'll come anywhere near the legs of Zootopia which achieved one of the ten best multipliers on record. So, Ralph 2 could result in their fourth consecutive decrease in the market if it can't get past Moana. Moana grossed ¥5.17 billion, and while that mark is within reach with Ralph 2's opening, it will require a leggier performance. At the moment, I'd expect a total around ¥4.5 billion ($40 million). That's good, maybe great considering it'd be almost a 50% increase over the original, but again, probably not the downward trend Disney would want in the market.

>Dragon Ball Super: Broly fell a little higher than expected going into the weekend, but it still held slightly better than its predecessor and missed the 50% drop. Its second weekend is 10% lower than Resurrection F's, which is a percentage improvement over its opening weekend being 15% lower. But more importantly, in part due to one extra day in release, its running total is 2% ahead of its predecessor's. If it can maintain a similar run from this point forward, it stands a good chance of becoming the highest grossing film in the Dragon Ball franchise, aiming to reach ¥3.75 billion (about $35 million).

>Bohemian Rhapsody declines for a second week, but still achieved an incredible weekend hold, earning itself a seventh weekend greater than its opening weekend, second weekend and third weekends... It has begun to show a slight hint of perhaps slowing down, or at least drop back down to its first week earnings..., but it'll receive a huge boost over New Year's next week. I see no obstacles on its path toward the ¥10 billion ($90 million) milestone.

>Kamen Rider Heisei Generations FOREVER, the 61st theatrical release in the long-running franchise, delivered what I believe is the second or third biggest debut in franchise history, at least in the past 20 years or so, selling 313,000 admissions over the weekend frame on 332 screens. And after its first three days in release, it sold an impressive 422,433 admissions. This franchise is one of the most frontloaded in the market, but it should finish near ¥1.5 billion (about $15 million), a very impressive total for an entry in the series.

>Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is still performing very well, although it now has fallen a bit behind the original after tracking very closely (even ahead at a couple points) for over a month. It's still probably on track to reach the ¥7 billion (about $65 million) milestone, but I can see it falling just short. But even if it misses that mark, it'll still finish with a similar total as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 (¥6.86 billion), and finish within 10% of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. And that's an impressive achievement given how it dropped off in nearly every other market.

>A Star is Born hasn't had its actual weekend figure itself released yet (so the number above is an estimate), but its total as of Monday was released (above). It sold 249,669 admissions over its first four days in release across 396 screens. The film got off to a fairly slow start, though, but I wouldn't rule out a respectable total just yet since it's certainly the type of film that could spawn great/excellent legs over New Year. I'd expect a total near ¥2 billion ($15-20 million). I believe this film would have benefited a bit more with a Spring release like most Oscar bait receive in the market, during/following the award season.

>Nisekoi: False Love hasn't had its weekend figure released yet either, just its four day total (121,709 admissions), but it's a pretty big bomb. It wasn't expected to be a hit or anything, but it earned in its four days in release what it should have grossed over just the weekend frame itself.
Not a good close to the year for Toho, but their first 9/10 months were so strong, they didn't really need a breakout this month.

But for now, I'm keeping them on the 2018 charts until it's official.

I'm so glad for Heisei Generations FOREVER :wub2:
According your list here it will be fourth biggest opening

Japanese public really love Takeru Satoh isn't it? Or may be there is the other reason that film receive so many since 2012?

I was hoping to see Bohemian Rhapsody jump over Code Blue to win the year but forgot about this strange rule. I'm guessing it will still be Top 3 in 2019 though.

Yes, fourth biggest, thanks for checking that and reminding me that I finally got around to making an opening weekend list for the Kamen Rider franchise last year. I'll update the list in my next post to include the new film.

Takeru Sotah is pretty popular, yes. He's not a reliable draw in every film he stars in, but his films perform consistently well. Are you asking if he's a (or the) reason for the new Kamen Rider film opened so well? I wouldn't go that far, but he probably brought in some extra fans. This was the last Kamen Rider film in the Heisei era (the Emperor is abdicating the throne in April), so that likely boosted it in its debut considering it opened over his birthday weekend.

There's a community that debates the Kamen Rider film franchise? I know it's a very long-running, and well known series, but always felt it was very, very niche outside of Japan.

I'll have some free time to work on it bit by bit over the next week or two.

Note: During the pre-New Year's Week, or Christmas Week is you like, films targeting children and families benefit the most. Films that target an adult audience receive a slight boost, but are mostly unaffected since they still have work to attend. Then, during the actual New Year's Week, adult films see a substantial boost since their audience have some work-free days. Children/Family films do well during New Year's Week, too, but it's a more subdued boost.

Christmas Week = Stronger for Family/Children films.
New Year's Week = Stronger for Adult films.

Probably slightly stronger. But the last weekend of December mostly behaves like a regular weekend. The biggest days this holiday season will be Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday next week. Each one of them could rival this upcoming weekend.

And next weekend will be very strong, and should see some increases across the board.

Broly presales are down 33% week to week. With a similar actuals/presales multiplier as last weekend, that would mean a 24% drop in actuals for a 320 million yen weekend.

Resurrection F was at ¥2.6 billion by its third weekend so anything above ¥230 million for Broly will keep it ahead then.

Its third weekend was ¥299 million too. I'd be pleased with anything above ¥300 million.

I'm thinking a 30% decline or so is likely for it. Just slightly better than that is needed for ¥300 million, so it's doable. I'll probably play it a bit safe and go under though in my forecast since I expect Sunday evening to be noticeably down versus last Sunday evening. Last Sunday evening was strong because when Monday is a holiday, Sunday evenings usually see a boost. This Sunday should perform like a typical Sunday.

I'll have the Weekend Forecast posted soon.

06 (06) ¥117,000,000 ($1.1 million), -37%, ¥625,000,000 ($5.6 million), A Star is Born (Warner Bros.) WK2
07 (08) ¥109,000,000 ($985,000), -19%, ¥785,000,000 ($7.2 million), Yo-Kai Watch: Forever Friends (Toho) WK3
08 (07) ¥x97,000,000 ($875,000), -35%, ¥860,000,000 ($7.8 million), The Grinch (Toho-Towa) WK3
09 (---) ¥x80,000,000 ($675,000), 0, ¥125,000,000 ($1.3 million), A Banana? At This Time of Night? (Toho) NEW

And we've come to it at last -- Bohemian Rhapsody is looking to reclaim the #1 spot in its eighth weekend of release, which will be its first time back on top since its second weekend. It'll be pretty close between it and the second weekend of Ralph Breaks the Internet, but it should be the slight favorite. Big Hero 6 dropped 24% in its second weekend, the last weekend of December 2014, and I'm doubtful Ralph 2 will do quite as well given the weaker reception.

>Dragon Ball Super: Broly should, more or less, keep following a similar trajectory as the previous film, Resurrection F, but should once again hold slightly better than its predecessor over the weekend. A similar, either slightly better or worse, third weekend and total after three weeks will be quite advantageous in its goal of becoming the highest grossing film in the franchise with New Year coming up next week.

>Kamen Rider Heisei Generations FOREVER will likely see the usual ~50% second weekend drop that nearly every film in the series experiences. It's possible it could approach a 55% drop after its bigger debut, but maybe the extra hype surrounding the film from fans will keep it around that 50% mark again.

>Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald continues to find success in Japan, and having already surpassed its gross in the U.K. two weeks ago in the market, it's now on track to eventually surpass its gross in China in the market, as well, to become its #1 international territory. Unlike just about every market -- major market at least -- the film will end up having a comparable gross as the original in Japan.

>A Star is Born... after a mediocre debut, and only decent set of weekdays, I was hoping it'd begin to turn things around in its second weekend ahead of New Year, but that doesn't appear likely to happen. Its reception in Japan is positive, but it's not as strong as in the U.S. and some other markets (audience scores are between 3.5-4 out of 5). I'm sure it'll do great next week during New Year, but its numbers are just too small to post anything too remarkable. And again, Warner Bros. probably should have held off on its release until the Spring.

As of 12pm Broly is doing about 83% of where it was at last Saturday. Seems good so far but I suppose it'll drop.

Wow! Bohemian's run is insane in Japan. I believe Frozen was the last movie to have regained #1 position after so long in its run and the marketplace isn't bad either at this point.

Corpse any chance that Bohemian ends with winning 2019 given that 2018's highest movie ended up with $83m USD and ¥9.23 billion?

Broly looks to have fallen so that in the end it did 76% of last Saturday which should be around ¥138 million.

So if Sunday sees the same increase as last week of 30% then it could finish the weekend around ¥320 million.

Oh yeah. Well the movie increased 11% on the first Sunday and 30% on the second Sunday so it could be somewhere in the middle.

If it can increase 20% then that could get it over ¥300 million.

Frozen was #1 for 16 consecutive weekends by gross, so I think it may have been another movie that regained #1 you are thinking about.

Regarding the second point, I think it depends how much over ¥10 billion Bohemian Rhapsody can actually go. Makoto Shinkai's "Weathering With You" should be huge next year. Following his phenomenon Your Name, I'm guessing ¥15 billion isn't unrealistic. The next Detective Conan film could also surpass ¥10 billion given the growth of the franchise in recent years. And perhaps another Hollywood film might cross that milestone too.

2019 has potential to be the biggest year ever, beating 2016, if all goes well. This is without knowing where 2018 finished, of course -- it may have broken the record first.

Below I've listed what I consider to be many films that are likely to find success at the box office next year. Next to each film is a projected range using either ¥3-5 billion, ¥5-10 billion, or ¥10 billion+, that I believe each film could fall in. Please note that just because I have a film listed below in any of these three ranges doesn't mean they'll 100% make it; it just means that they have the potential to gross a figure at the low-end of that range, and/or have the chance to go to the high-end of that range.

Example 01: I have next year's Doraemon film in the ¥5-10 billion range. It's incredibly unlikely to gross anywhere near the high-end of that range, but based on the previous film and the franchise's growth recently, it's still likely to reach at least ¥5 billion and achieve the low-end of the range. I want to avoid having too many projected ranges, so it fell there.

Example 02: I have Toy Story 4 in the ¥5-10 billion range. Its predecessor was a huge success, making a bit over ¥10 billion, but with the decline that all but one Pixar sequel (Cars 2) has experienced in the market, the next film is likely to drop and fall below ¥10 billion. It won't drop as low as ¥5 billion, but again, I want to avoid too many projected ranges.

01/18: Masquerade Hotel (¥3-5 billion)
02/01: Mary Poppins Returns (¥3-5 billion)
02/22: The Day's Organ (¥3-5 billion)
03/01: Doraemon: Nobita's Chronicle of Moon Exploration (¥5-10 billion)
03/08: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (¥3-5 billion)
03/29: Dumbo (¥3-5 billion)
04/12: Detective Conan: The First of Blue Sapphire (¥10 billion+)
04/19: Kingdom (¥3-5 billion)
04/26: Avengers: Endgame (¥3-5 billion)
05/31: Godzilla: King of Monsters (¥3-5 billion)
06/07: Aladdin (¥5-10 billion)
07/12: Pokemon: Mewtwo's Counterattack Evolution (¥3-5 billion)
07/12: Toy Story 4 (¥5-10 billion)
07/19: Weathering With You (¥10 billion+)
07/26: The Great War of Archimedes (¥3-5 billion)
08/09: One Piece Film Stampede (¥5-10 billion)
09/13: Kioku ni Gozaimasen (¥3-5 billion)
12/27: Welcome Back, Tora-san! (¥3-5 billion)

Release Dates TBD:
May: Detective Pikachu (¥3-5 billion)
Summer: The Secret Life of Pets 2 (¥5-10 billion)
Summer: Men in Black International (¥3-5 billion)
Fall: At the End of the Matinee (¥3-5 billion)
TBA: The Lion King (¥5-10 billion)
TBA: Spider-Man: Far From Home (¥3-5 billion)
TBA: Frozen 2 (¥10 billion+)
TBA: It: Chapter Two (¥3-5 billion)
TBA: Star Wars: Episode IX (¥5-10 billion)

There will probably be a number of films added to the release schedule over the next month or two (Japanese films are often announced late), especially for the months of August and September.
