Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (11/03-04)
So Creed II opens in 11th January. What's your thoughts, Corpse? How have the Rocky films (and most importantly, Creed) fared in Japan?

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (11/03-04)
I can't find any data on the first two Rocky films since they were released before 1980. That would, however, mean they didn't gross anything significant since grosses for films released before 1980 are mostly available if they're big enough.
Rocky III earned a distributor income of ¥1.67 billion in 1982, which would have been around ¥2.6 billion (~$10/11 million then). It was actually the fifth biggest film of 1982.
Rocky IV was a much bigger success, earning a distributor income of ¥2.95 billion in 1986, which would have been around ¥4.5 billion ($26/27 million then). The noticeable growth was probably due to Stallone becoming a huge name (Rambo was big in Japan) by the time it was released. It was the third biggest film of 1986.
Rocky V experienced a severe drop-off, only earning a distributor income of ¥1.055 billion in 1990 (down nearly 65%), which would have been around ¥1.6 billion ($11/12 million then). It was the fifteenth biggest film of 1991 (since it was a December release).
Rocky Balboa failed to have anywhere near the success of the earlier Rocky films, opening to just ¥162 million ($1.4 million), and finishing with around ¥800 million ($6.5 million) in 2007. Since it failed to reach ¥1 billion, no actual was released. It likely finished outside the Top 60/70 films of 2007.
Creed didn't perform well in Japan whatsoever, only debuting at #10 with ¥43 million ($375,000). It did have good legs, though, partly due to a New Year release, but only finished around ¥400 million ($3.5 million). I doubt it came within the Top 100 films of 2015.
And finally, I think Creed II could earn more than the first film, but certainly not much more. I'd consider a gross of ¥500 million ($4 million+) pretty solid given the performance of the original and the last Rocky film. But maybe being linked to Rocky IV could help a bit? We'll see.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (11/03-04)
I'll have the Weekend Actuals up later this evening, but Venom came in above expectations, and actually delivered the 10th biggest opening weekend for a Marvel/DC film, only trailing the many Spider-Man and Avengers films (I'm including Civil War since that featured Spider-Man). It grossed ¥439,035,500 ($3.9 million) on 289,012 admissions over the weekend; and earned ¥569,152,400 ($5.0 million) with 396,989 admissions since Friday. Quite impressive.

The film sold an impressive 289,012 admissions over the weekend frame across 746 screens; and 396,989 admissions since opening on Friday.
This debut is an impressive 4% higher than The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and just 2% lower than Spider-Man: Homecoming. It's also the biggest opening weekend for a Sony release since, well, Spider-Man: Homecoming as well. We can expect a minimum gross of at least ¥2 billion (~$20 million), but a gross between ¥2.5-3 billion ($25-30 million) should be doable.
>Stolen Identity opened in second place, and also surprised a bit by coming in comfortably above the ¥200 million mark. It sold a solid 169,000 admissions over the weekend frame on 315 screens; and 220,663 admissions since opening on Friday. Expect a total near ¥1.5 billion (~$15 million).
>The Antique numbers remain an estimate, but I'll update when its actual is made available.
>Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer achieved its 18th non-consecutive weekend in the Top 10, and exceeded 6.82 million admissions on its 206th day in release. I'll have to check and see if Toho has decided to extend its 4D expansion, which was scheduled to end this upcoming Friday. Unless it receives an extended release that lasts a few more weeks, it won't be surpassing Code Blue to become the #1 film of 2018, but its success is remarkably impressive.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Charts Updated! (11/0
Hi corpse, someone in BOT mentioned that’s mojo shows Smallfoot making just $9k $96k in it’s only weekend time in Japan on 13-14th 12th to 21st October.
Have they got this completely wrong or did smallfoot horrendously bomb in Japan?
EDIT: corrected amount and dates

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Charts Updated! (11/0
Well... the grosses seem correct, but I can't say for sure since they're so low. Numbers for films that rank outside the Weekend Top 20/25 are rarely reported. And it's hard to say if it bombed, really, because it received a very limited release in a handful of theaters and is currently playing at just 3 theaters.
And it's lucky to have received any sort of theatrical release, because in the course of the past 5+ years, it's very rare for non-Disney/Illumination animated films to receive a theatrical release at all in Japan since they've bombed so badly in the past and cost everyone involved time and time again in the market.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (11/10-11)
(C)2018 Twentieth Century FoxWeekend Forecast (11/10-11)01 (---) ¥325,000,000 ($2.9 million), 0, ¥430,000,000 ($3.8 million), Bohemian Rhapsody (Fox) NEW 02 (01) ¥263,000,000 ($2.3 million), -40%, ¥1,175,000,000 ($10.3 million), Venom (Sony) WK2 03 (---) ¥225,000,000 ($2.0 million), 0, ¥270,000,000 ($2.4 million), You, I Love (Asmik Ace) NEW 04 (02) ¥178,000,000 ($1.6 million), -24%, ¥700,000,000 ($6.2 million), Stolen Identity (Toho) WK2 05 (03) ¥116,000,000 ($1.0 million), -41%, ¥800,000,000 ($7.1 million), Hugtto! Pretty Cure: All Stars Memories (Toei) WK3 06 (---) ¥100,000,000 ($880,000), 0, ¥125,000,000 ($1.1 million), Godzilla: The Planet Eater (Toho) NEW 07 (05) ¥x40,000,000 ($350,000),-37%, ¥400,000,000 ($3.6 million), The Traveling Cat Chronicles (Shochiku) WK3 08 (---) ¥x30,000,000 ($265,000), 0, ¥x30,000,000 ($265,000), Zoku Owarimonogatari (Aniplex) NEW 09 (07) ¥x28,000,000 ($245,000), -39%, ¥575,000,000 ($5.0 million), Million Dollar Man (Toho) WK4 10 (08) ¥x27,000,000 ($235,000), -32%, ¥900,000,000 ($8.0 million), Every Day, A Good Day (Tokyo Theaters, Co.) WK5There is a lot going on this weekend, and I wouldn't be surprised if the bottom half of the Top 10 looks noticeably different on Sunday/Monday. The weekend has 24 theatrical releases, and 10 of those are playing wide enough to potentially make the Top 10.
>Bohemian Rhapsody is likely to debut atop the box office after delivering a good first day yesterday and with its solid pre-sales going into the weekend frame. This is the sort of film that typically develops great legs, too, so expect a good run in the market. A debut around the forecast would probably allow it to reach ¥2-2.5 billion ($20-25 million).
>Venom isn't going to break the trend of frontloaded Marvel/DC films (excluding Spider-Man releases) it seems, but its second weekend will be on par with the standard opening weekend for the average Marvel/DC film. I'm expecting it to exceed the ¥2 billion (up to $20 million) milestone, and probably finish around ¥2.2/2.3 billion ($20 million+). It would be the 15th Marvel/DC film to reach ¥2 billion, and only the 5th to do outside of the Spider-Man and Avengers releases.
>You, I Love has some impressive pre-sales that suggest it may debut in second place ahead of Venom, but being an Asmik Ace release, it probably doesn't have the necessary screens to do it. We'll see; and either way, it should end up as a welcomed success for Asmik Ace.
>Godzilla: The Planet Eater is the third and final film of Toho Animation's animated Godzilla film trilogy. Its first day came in about 13% ahead of the last film, but its weekend pre-sales are about on par with it. The second film missed the ¥100 million mark in its debut in May, but I'm going to predict this one just barely reaches it due to the finale factor.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (11/10-11)
Apparently Japan is one of the countries required to approve the Disney-Fox merger, but I think they will easily approve it since I do not think it would form a monopoly at the Japanese box office nor on television.

The new trailer for Detective Pikachu just dropped. Could this film breakout in Japan given it's the first live-action Pokemon film and has appeal beyond the young children/families demographic?

Jiffy wrote: Corpse, what sort of numbers are you expecting for ASIB next month? It should do quite well. It has the good box office numbers in the U.S., strong reviews internationally, recognizable stars in Gaga and Cooper, and a great release date -- a date that makes it one of just a few non-animated films that's releasing ahead of New Year this year. ¥2 billion (~$20 million) should be very doable, and I could see it do ¥3-4 billion (~$30-40 million).
