It's not the only market, probably the one which is tracked properly here

Why don't you give us some examples of the other markets instead of doing a Chippy and just saying "wrong!".

I thought the answer was obvious with that statement. India! Even with all the growth that market has been difficult for American movies. Even small Asian markets like Thailand aren't always kind to American movies. From what I remember even Russia isn't a huge market for American movies recently. I think it's more about market's capability to generate home grown movies that's the factor here

Oh, haha. Yeah, India. I always forget India is even a market because of how badly US movies do there.

Very nice Wednesday. Don't be alarmed by the "big" drops Wed-to-Wed; last Wednesday was the 1st of the month (national discount day), so any drop under 50% is impressive. Incredibles 2 held particularly well, given it opened last Wednesday.

I thought Wednesday was discount for females but Pokémon benefitted more. Is there a connection here Corpse?

Wednesday is always Ladies' Day (40% discount on tickets for females), as you mentioned, and films skewing female always benefit more, but films that target families or children also benefit a lot.

It's a popular day for mothers to take their children to see a film. Remember that Pokemon skews very young in Japan (pre-teen), so most children are accompanied by their parents, or in many cases their mothers since Japan is still a dominantly male workforce.

Thanks Corpse I was thinking the same as well. So does that mean I2 is skewing younger or is it just one of the cases. Why I ask is because Pixar movies generally target more adults domestically for longetivity. Is that the audience that Pixar has somehow lost in Japan?

Doesn't Pokemon skew very young everywhere? When I was younger, it was only pre-teens that liked it.

True, but you don't see it reflected anywhere else at the box-office. Pokemon's average ticket price in Japan is about 14% below the national average due to how young it skews.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekday Estimates (08/06-10)
Nice Friday, and given the Friday-to-Friday increases/drops, it's a sign that Obon Festival is about to begin its positive effects on the box-office.

Some pre-weekend analysis:

Code Blue continues its reign atop the box-office, and is still outpacing both Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. It's likely to exceed the ¥5 billion milestone over the weekend before going into Obon Festival. It's becoming a very strong contender now for the yearly crown.

Incredibles 2 had a rough first five days, but its weekday business has been very strong, and being up double digits versus last Friday is great. It's probably going to see a second weekend increase.

Mission: Impossible - Fallout being down 40% versus its opening day last week is a little steep, but I believe it'll have a strong hold over the weekend frame.

Ocean's 8 did alright on its first day, but it's definitely not going to match the success of its male predecessors.

My Hero Academia being down 80% versus last Friday looks extremely bad, and alarming, but it was heavily frontloaded last week due to the manga giveaway tie-in driving pre-sales. It won't drop anywhere near 80% over the actual weekend frame.

The Weekend Forecast will be posted later this evening.

Obon Festival -- the strongest week of the box-office every year -- approaches, and right before it begins we'll see a strong weekend box-office with many notable holds, and potentially some increases as well.

>Code Blue is likely to repeat atop the box-office for a third-consecutive weekend, and will very likely exceed the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone in the progress. Its cumulative total is running ahead of every other film this year at the same-point-in-time, and it's about to enter the biggest holiday period of the year on Monday -- Obon Festival. Unless it receives a lackluster boost next week, I believe it has the advantage in the three-way battle with Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom for the 2018 yearly crown, and could finish near ¥9 billion ($80 million).

>Mission: Impossible - Fallout should post a good second weekend hold, but could fall to third place in its sophomore frame. It opened 11% higher than Rogue Nation, but will probably fall a bit behind it after this weekend. However, Rogue Nation was released a few days closer to Obon Festival and had received its initial boost in its second weekend. Once Fallout experiences the holiday period boon next week, I'm confident it'll pull ahead and not look back. ¥5 billion+ ($45 million) is still likely.

>Incredibles 2 didn't impress in its debut weekend, but it has since delivered great weekdays, and is in position to experience a second weekend increase. Japanese audiences have dismissed the Pixar sequels, so perhaps it just took awhile for moviegoers to gain interest in this entry. Its chances of reaching the ¥5 billion ($45 million) blockbuster milestone, and possibly even outgrossing the original film's ¥5.26 billion total have gone up dramatically in just a matter of days

>Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom had a harsh 50% drop last weekend due to screen/showtime & IMAX cuts, but it has since recovered some over the past weekdays, and based on Saturday pre-sales, looks poised to deliver a strong fifth weekend gross. It's still in the three-way battle with Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer and Code Blue for the 2018 yearly crown, however, it has slipped a bit and may be the likely third-place finisher. A total around ¥8 billion ($70 million) remains likely.

>Ocean's 8 debuts this weekend, but based on its Friday numbers and Saturday pre-sales, doesn't appear likely to become a hit in the market. It'll earn a top 5 debut, but an opening around the forecast will probably only result in about a ¥2 billion ($20 million) total.

Weekend Estimates (08/11-12)

>Code Blue will repeat atop the box-office for a third-consecutive weekend, and exceeded the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone in the process. Its three-week total is higher than all but one domestic live-action film before it, 2003's Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge!, and its cumulative total is also running ahead of every other film this year at the same-point-in-time. Unless it receives a lackluster boost during Obon Festival (unlikely), I believe it has the advantage in the three-way battle with Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom for the 2018 yearly crown, and could finish near ¥9 billion ($80 million).

>Mission: Impossible - Fallout defends its second place position with a great hold, and a second weekend that is almost on par with the opening weekends of the two previous films in the franchise. Its two-week total is, however, trailing Rogue Nation's, but Rogue Nation opened a few days closer to Obon Festival and had already received its initial holiday boost. Fallout will pull ahead in just a few days and will likely gain a comfortable lead. I'm expecting a total around ¥5.5 billion ($50 million).

>Incredibles 2 didn't impress in its debut weekend, but it then delivered great weekdays, and achieved a strong second weekend increase. Japanese audiences have been dismissive of the Pixar sequels, so perhaps this entry needed the positive WOM to spread to get moviegoers interested in checking another sequel out. Its chances of reaching the ¥5 billion ($45 million) blockbuster milestone, and possibly even outgrossing the original film's ¥5.26 billion total have gone up dramatically in just a matter of days.

>Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom had a harsh 50% drop last weekend due to screen/showtime & IMAX cuts, but it recovered some over the past weekdays, and is going to enjoy a solid fifth-weekend increase ahead of the holiday period. It's still in the three-way battle with Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer and Code Blue for the 2018 yearly crown, but it'll need a particularly strong Obon Festival to remain competitive. We'll see. A total of ¥8-8.5 billion ($70-75 million) remains the likely total.

>Ocean's 8 settles for a fifth place debut, and couldn't go beyond having an ordinary opening, either. It won't be able to match the success of its male predecessors, and will likely only finish around ¥2 billion (~$20 million).

Obon Festival -- the strongest week of the box-office -- begins this week, so expect huge weekday performances that are likely to double the weekend grosses above from Monday through Friday.

>One Cut of the Dead surprises yet again and remains -- and climbs one position -- in the top 10 after an expansion. The film has received glowing reviews at festivals, and among audiences since its release, with a lot of people saying it's one of the best zombie comedy films ever. That's a short-list of contenders, I'm sure, but it's been compared to Shaun of the Dead.

Note: The weekend gross/cumulative total for My Hero Academia: Two Heroes remains an estimate. I'll update it when the figures are available.

Obon Festival -- the strongest week of the box-office -- begins this week, so expect huge weekday performances that are likely to double the weekend grosses above from Monday through Friday. I'll provide weekday estimates all week.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Obon Festival Begins
I'll post Monday's estimates here shortly. Monday was the first day of Obon Festival's impact on the box-office this year. And just to remind everyone how big Obon Festival is for the box-office, Monday's estimates alone are on par with Saturday/Sunday's numbers.

Monday through Friday (08/13-17) earnings could triple the past weekend grosses. Films that target a young audience could even earn 4x their past weekend gross over the next five days.
