Will equal TFA WW gross with a lesser domestic box office. Bank on it

Sure Episode VIII was divisive but it should still manage $650m+

I won't say $650m+ is a lock.

If the marketing seems to offer something new and interesting, maybe it could. But I doubt it will. Even though the last Jedi did have new and interesting stuff in it, the marketing was quite same old same old.

Re: Star Wars - Episode IX predictions (12/20/2019)
The marketing won't mean shit. It's opening over $200 mil. The question will be the legs. If its beloved, it will have great legs and blow by $700 mil.
To say it has "no reason" to increase is idiotic. You don't even know what the film is about.

Re: Star Wars - Episode IX predictions (12/20/2019)
Star Wars is slowly becoming unpopular in the same way as DC (not there yet, but it is trending down), but Star Wars still holds a special place amongst the hearts of older audiences unlike Marvel, so expect this to still do gangbusters. Maybe 600m or so

Re: Star Wars - Episode IX predictions (12/20/2019)
My experience with friends/relatives between the ages of 35-50 is that they generally love the MCU and are more lukewarm about the recent SW films.

Re: Star Wars - Episode IX predictions (12/20/2019)
SW is definitely not becoming "unpopular" yet that would happen years later when Disney runs it to the ground giving one-two installments every year and it starts loosing its fanbase (which might never happen to begin with).

Oh, it definitely is becoming unpopular. It's early days, but the seeds are planted. Darth Indiana Bond just has greater foresight than you, Jack.

MY EYES....can't see. DAMN I CAN'T SEE ANY FORESIGHT SW becoming less relevant compared to red-hot MCU and needs a break to continue doing those record breaking numbers but I won't say its unpopular.

Re: Star Wars - Episode IX predictions (12/20/2019)
it's decreasing. Not enough time to hype it unlike ROTJ and ROTS. It's not a finale (there are going to be a million more Star Wars movies), no real hook, no stakes (Rey already beat Ren in the first movie and the First Order are utter buffoons), the characters people really loved are dead, and Solo of course helping to dilute the Star Wars brand
I can honestly see a really nasty drop.

Re: Star Wars - Episode IX predictions (12/20/2019)
This is a finale of the main story line even if there will be an SW movie every year from now till ages. I agree on the stakes part and yes the marketing on this one will matter, they cannot just appeal people with "hey look its a new Star Wars movie".

Re: Star Wars - Episode IX predictions (12/20/2019)
even if it is a "finale" who cares? Nobody gives a fuck about Finn, Poe, Rose etc. General Hux and the First Order are idiotic buffoons of villains, Kylo Ren was already defeated in the first movie by super strong perfect Rey (I don't care if I sound sexist, you know it's true). There is no stakes. None
