A little weaker than expected, but it was coming off the tail-end of Golden Week. Saturday's pre-sales were misleading, and Sunday evening/night was very slow due to school and businesses starting back Monday morning.

Does Coco still have enough juice left to cross ¥5 billion?

Corpse,
This might be asking a lot, but are there attendance figures you (or we) can find to put with all of those DC/Marvel movies. I realize a few of them might be too old to dig up.

Didn't realize that the original Avengers missed the blockbuster milestone by so less. Sad to see that the Spidey movies have gone down so heavily from the original trilogy. Thanks for putting this list Corpse

It'll be a bit of a crawl, but it's still likely to just reach the milestone.

Yeah, no problem, just give me a little time to compile them. The only films that I may not be able to get admissions for are those that made less than ¥1 billion that were released before 2008. I'm thinking it'll be just seven or eight films (out of all 52), but I'll still get an estimate for those.

There you go, gman2887. The only admission estimates are Batman and Superman II (estimate calculated using the avg. ticket price of the year they were released), and X-Men (strangely I can't find any admission figure on it despite being a 2000 release).

I also updated Avengers: Infinity War's estimate following this morning's rough figures. Weekend Actuals will be posted later this evening.

If you really want some admissions for the films below the ¥1 billion milestone, feel free to ask. Just note that none of them came anywhere near 1 million admissions (many of the films that earned up to ¥1.5 billion didn't either). Here's a quick guide: If a film grossed around ¥900 million, it likely sold around 700,000 admissions; if a film grossed around ¥700 million, it likely sold around 500,000 admissions; if a film grossed around ¥500 million, it likely sold around 300,000 admissions.

Corpse, random question, but I was re-experiencing Avatar's record-breaking gross across the globe reading articles and such.

I was wondering what the potential for Avatar 2 is Japan? I think it grossed like ¥15b+ which is huge. However since 3D is so little of the gross in Japan nowadays, is there any way to could come close to that?

Corpse, random question, but I was re-experiencing Avatar's record-breaking gross across the globe reading articles and such.

I was wondering what the potential for Avatar 2 is Japan? I think it grossed like ¥15b+ which is huge. However since 3D is so little of the gross in Japan nowadays, is there any way to could come close to that?

3D shares for high-profile releases have actually increased a bit over the past couple years (no where near 2010-2012 levels, though), and other premium formats have been doing pretty well, too. Ticket prices also went up for the first time in nearly 20 years in 2014, so that's caused the avg. ticket price to climb ever so slightly as well. A high-profile 3D release has actually been able to match the avg. ticket prices of those films released back in 2010-2012 as a result of all this.

So, Avatar 2 should have a similar avg. ticket price as Avatar despite a 3D share going down from ~85% to probably ~40%. However, I see a sizable decline for Avatar 2 in Japan. The first film seemed to mostly benefit from being this must-see event film in theaters, and I don't think the sequel(s) will be able to replicate that same event status unless a new way to watch films in theaters is introduced along with them or something.

And while home video sales in Japan aren't very impressive since TV broadcasts of movies and video rentals are still popular in the market, Avatar had particularly weak sales compared to its box-office results (and its TV broadcasts have had mediocre ratings), meaning I don't think it really developed a significant following after leaving theaters.

I think this is a typo. Boss Baby increased instead of decreased.

Ready Player One seems to have handled Avengers very well in Japan.

And so begins some of the slowest days and weekends of the year. Once Golden Week is over, the remaining weeks of May and all of June is largely a wasteland that studios release films they have little, or at least, questionable confidence in. June is regularly one of the three weakest months each year, so enjoy the rest of May while you can.

The post-Golden Week weekend typically experiences harsh drops for the holdovers, and it won't be any different this year -- look for all of them to drop close to, or over, 50% following the very beneficial holiday period, with films targeting family/children declining the most this year due to Children's Day falling on the weekend last week.

IW will easily cross AoU now. Corpse with the weaker field do you think it will have enough juice to come close or pass the original Avengers?

Amazing for Conan it's now guaranteed to take over TLJ for the biggest domestic movie if the year

It doesn't need to overtake TLJ to be the biggest domestic film of the year. It already is the biggest domestic film of the year.

Rough weekend for the holdovers following the Golden Week holiday period, but not unexpected given this weekend typically experiences harsh declines.

>Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer continues to reign atop the box-office in its fifth-weekend of release, and has exceeded 5.1 million admissions to become the most-attended film of the year. The twenty-second film in the long-running series is only ¥130 million away from surpassing last year's film to become the highest-grossing film in the series, which it'll do possibly this Friday or certainly in its sixth-weekend. The film is very likely to exceed the ¥7.5 billion ($70 million) milestone to surpass Star Wars: The Last Jedi to become the highest-grossing film of 2018, so far.

>Avengers: Infinity War falls hard as expected in its third weekend, but it has already exceeded the ¥3 billion mark, making it the fastest non-Spider-Man Marvel/DC film to ever reach the milestone. It will continue to fall hard from here on, so I'm doubting it'll have the staying power to reach ¥4 billion, but it'll likely outgross The Avengers' ¥3.61 billion to become the highest-grossing non-Spider-Man Marvel/DC release in the market.

>The Blood of Wolves, starring Koji Yakusho, debuts in third place with a decent start, selling 112,684 admissions across 337 screens over the weekend. The opening isn't anything noteworthy or anything, but it's solid enough in the post-Golden Week slot.

>Then Youth, But Youth surprised over the weekend and sold enough admissions to come in fifth place, but no figures have been release for the film yet. Its weekend number is just a placeholder for now, and I do have it in sixth because Ready Player One likely came in fifth in revenue. Nikkatsu is a small distributor, and it sometimes takes a couple extra days for any numbers to be released from them.

>Coco also experienced the big post-Golden Week drop, and its chances of reaching the blockbuster milestone of ¥5 billion appears in jeopardy, I believe it'll still reach it even if it takes another month, or two. There's very little for families/children to see until July, so it should perform well enough to crawl to the milestone.
