That is the only statistic where India comes top! And it is the most useless. Admissions and revenue are paramount, not number of movies produced per year. India is not one the big movie markets, end of.

Actually, admissions wise, India comes out on top of US. I believe admissions for India is roughly 2 billion a year (from memory seeing a post about it somewhere)

Found this from 2011: http://greenash.net.au/thoughts/2011/07 ... dmissions/

But it doesn't beat China, so it's still not top.

I have no idea what you're trying to say?

If you look at this chart for example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film_indu ... ce_revenue

In 2016, India had twice the admissions of the U.S. and almost twice the admissions of China as well. Yes, the gross in USD was less, but why should that make India any less significant?

Even though India may have just 15% gross from non-Bollywood films each year, that does not make it any less significant in the world just because it doesn't contribute to Hollywood.

So, yes it is top in admissions, which is what counts when comparing countries. India is able to put twice as many butts on seats than Hollywood. It's not India's fault that the exchange rate means tickets are comparatively cheaper on average.

Massive Thursday, and some of those increases versus last week are hilariously huge (almost a 5,000% increase for Doraemon, haha). Thursday pretty much matched Monday, and may have edged it out as the biggest day of Golden Week so far.

With both Conan and Doraemon hitting the ¥5b mark, it appears that Golden Week is helping Greatest Showman and Coco also reach that goal.

The TGS's strong holds, I'd be surprised if it doesn't make it. Coco should make it, if just barely. Unless there's something big coming soon to chop them down.

Weekend Actuals for last week are available now, by the way, and I'll post them tomorrow. They were a little higher than the estimates on the past page, and I'll adjust the Golden Week daily estimates to reflect the weekend actuals tomorrow with Friday's numbers.

They'll make it.

Weekend Actuals were slightly higher than my estimates, for most films (Infinity War is actually a little lower), on the last page, and the cumulative totals for many films you see above in the Golden Week Daily Estimates will go up a bit when I adjust them tomorrow.

Amazing jump for Doremon. Great Thursday. This weekend would most likely be enough for TGS to reach blockbuster milestone. Coco is doing really well as expected.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Golden Week 2018 (Daily Estimates)
Great Friday (note: cumulative totals were updated for the Friday estimates to reflect last weekend's actuals).

Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer is doing huge numbers and will easily break the ¥6 billion milestone over the weekend (probably sometime tomorrow). It's going to be a tough act to follow for the upcoming Summer releases.

Laplace's Witch performed very well (may have edge out a second place start in admissions), but let's see how it holds up as its opening day couldn't have been at a better time.

Avengers: Infinity War unfortunately dropped from its opening day, but a sub-20% decline is pretty solid given the genre, although there aren't many films to compare this example (Marvel/DC film having a holiday on its second Friday) with to get an accurate indicator of things to come. Either way, its 8-day total is higher than every Marvel/DC film, aside from the original Spider-Man trilogy of films. It's very likely going to become the highest-grossing non-Spider-Man film among all Marvel/DC releases.

I'll have the Weekend Forecast posted later this evening.

This is the first weekend since 2013 that Children's Day (May 5th) has fallen on the weekend, so look for some major increases for films skewing toward family/children. Overall, this is a tricky weekend to predict since Saturday is a holiday (and one targeting a specific demo) while Sunday is not, so the numbers will fluctuate a bit from the forecast.

>Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer is going to climb back to the #1 spot in its fourth weekend (it actually held off Avengers in admissions last week), and once again set a new franchise record total after four weeks in release. It'll begin to fall hard after Sunday, but it's going to easily exceed ¥7 billion ($65 million), and could reach ¥8 billion ($75 million).

>Avengers: Infinity War is going to slip to second place in its second weekend (and remain there in admissions), and will easily score the biggest two-week total among all MCU films, and among all Marvel/DC films, aside from the original Spider-Man trilogy. It's on course for a total north of ¥4 billion ($35 million+). No other Marvel or DC film has ever reached ¥4 billion, aside from, once again, the original Spider-Man trilogy of films.

>Laplace's Witch delivered a strong first day yesterday, and while today's pre-sales are good, it's pretty clear they'll be a little frontloading here over the weekend since it debuted on a holiday. It could potentially reach ¥300 million over the weekend frame, but I'm going to a little safe.

>The tenth spot could be any of many different films, but it seems like it'll be The Boss Baby. It is way up versus last Saturday due to Children's Day, but it doesn't have the necessary seats to experience the level of increase that pre-sales suggests. I'm predicting that this particular film has an abnormally higher number of pre-sales due to the holiday, and that its actual weekend increase will be more "reasonable".

Damn TGS fell out of the Top 10. Corpse can you please confirm if its still having enough theater support or since it dropped out of Top 10 there is a massive theater cut for it?

It's been cut significantly, and is just barely in the Top 20 in terms of seating/showtimes, but it's gotten so close to ¥5 billion as a result of Golden Week, that I estimate it's only ¥50 million or so away going into the weekend. If it doesn't reach ¥5 billion on Sunday, it'll do so on Monday or Tuesday.

It'll be just the third live-action musical to achieve blockbuster status, after Les Miserables (2012) and Beauty and the Beast (2017)

Ah I thought so given the sudden drop on Friday outside of Top 10 the screens would have been cut. Thanks for the info Corpse, so happy that it will reach that milestone and AMAZING run in Japan.

That seems like a pretty disappointing Children's Day for what is usually among the biggest GW days.

It looks a bit weak, I believe, because it fell on the weekend during the time of year that Saturday and Sunday are already strong for family/children films. Had it fallen on the weekdays, it would have been noticeably stronger.

Corpse do you have the list of totals of MCU movies? If you have it handy it would be great to see how big were the original Spider-Man movies were.
