Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Charts Updated!
I'll post this past Weekend's Actuals & Chart Updates later this evening. Busy Week/Weekend.

A few notes about the past weekend:

Star Was: The Last Jedi held better in its second weekend than its predecessor.
Destiny: The Tale of Kakamura is without a doubt the primary leggy film of this winter (10+ multiplier), every December has one.
Kamen Rider Heisei Generations Final will become the first film in the franchise to exceed ¥1 billion (~$10 million) since, I believe, 2013 -- something like 11-13 films ago.

>Star Wars: The Last Jedi easily retained its position atop the box office; its second weekend of many to come. Episode VIII's 39% second weekend decline is an improvement over Episode VII's 42% decline, and trailed it by just 4%. However, its second weekend total is 17% behind Episode VII's due to the slightly earlier release date and not being able to capitalize on school break as early.

Comparison:
¥726 million ($6.0 million), -42%, ¥3.84 billion ($31.8 million), Star Wars: The Force Awakens
¥696 million ($6.1 million), -39%, ¥3.20 billion ($28.3 million), Star Wars: The Last Jedi

I don't expect Episode VIII will be able to catch Episode VII, but the results so far suggest it's going to finish relatively close to it (probably within 10-15%) compared to most other markets, and is aiming for a ¥9.5 billion ($80-85 million) total with a good shot at reaching the ¥10 billion uber-milestone still. Only Episodes I and VII achieved uber-status in the market.

>Yo-Kai Watch: Shadowside - Resurrection of the Demon King falls pretty hard, unsurprisingly, in its second weekend, but once again its an improvement over its predecessor's second weekend hold (this year by 10%). The continued improvement in legs, however, aren't enough to offset the substantial decline each film is having on opening weekend. The fourth film in the franchise will be aiming for ¥2.5 billion ($22/23 million) or so.

>The 8-Year Engagement enjoys an excellent second weekend, setting itself up for a very healthy run as New Year approaches. It's very likely to exceed ¥2 billion (~$20 million).

>Destiny: The Tale of Kakamura experienced another very strong hold after a 13% second weekend drop, decling just 11% in its third weekend. Takashi Yamazaki's latest didn't have the most exciting debut three weeks ago, but it's going to have the longevity to certainly make up for that. It's aiming for a total of ¥3 billion ($25 million+).

>Murder on the Orient Express held well in its third weekend of release, and is on track to exceed ¥1.5 billion (~$15 million), perhaps good enough for Japan to become its third strongest overseas market.

>Kamen Rider Generations: Build & Ex-Aid - Legend Riders is falling hard each week as every film in the franchise does, but it is holding every so slightly better than most, and it'll soon become the first film in the long-running series to reach the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone in several years.

Don't be alarmed by The Last Jedi and Murder on the Orient Express decreasing week-to-week while everything else is increasing, some by over a hundred percent.

The current week began the school/university break, so films targeting children/teens are enjoying an early boost at the box office ahead of New Year in Japan. For films that target a more adult audience, they'll receive their major holiday boost next week during New Year and the Bank holidays when businesses are closed.

I hope both still have enough theatre to gather money when the time comes. Especially Murder on the Orient Express (which is now going to be Agatha Christie cinematic universe), but it already surpass $300 million so my next personal goal for it is $320 million (with France and Japan market as last hope)

% Changes Versus Same Day Last Week.

Strong finish to the week all around (but expect even bigger increases next week). I'll post the Weekend Forecast later this evening.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekday Estimates (12/25-29)
The next ten days or so are going to be a roller coaster ride.

I'll post the Weekend Forecast later this evening, but I doubt increases are possible, and the drops are probably going to be somewhat high despite the strong weekdays. New Years Eve is a typically a poor day for the box office in Japan, and with it landing on a Sunday this year, I believe it'll greatly deflate the weekend box office.

However, next Monday (1st) and the following weekdays (2nd-5th) are going to be quite huge. Next Monday and Tuesday (1st and 2nd) alone will probably be much higher than this Saturday and Sunday (30th and 31st), for example. And next weekend (6th and 7th) should see significant increases all around.

01 (01) ¥445,000,000 ($3.9 million), -36%, ¥4,450,000,000 ($39.3 million), Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Disney) WK3
02 (02) ¥173,000,000 ($1.5 million), -29%, ¥1,375,000,000 ($12.2 million), The 8-Year Engagement (Shochiku) WK3

04 (04) ¥138,000,000 ($1.2 million), -39%, ¥1,200,000,000 ($10.6 million), Yo-Kai Watch: Resurrection of the Demon King (Toho) WK3
05 (07) ¥68,000,000 ($600,000), -38%, ¥1,150,000,000 ($10.1 million), Murder on the Orient Express (Fox) WK4
06 (06) ¥57,000,000 ($505,000), -49%, ¥975,000,000 ($8.5 million), Kamen Rider Generations: Build & Ex-Aid - Legend Riders (Toei) WK4

These drops appear much too high for this time of year, and that would generally be the case, but due to New Years Eve landing on Sunday this year, the weekend is going to be greatly deflated. New Years Eve is a popular social event in Japan, so the day is typically poor for the box office. The good news is that the forthcoming weekdays will benefit even greater than usual (Monday alone could rival the weekend frame), and next weekend will see significant increases (well into the double digits) as well.

Thank you, enzo1988. I was more than glad (even if I took forever most weeks) to help out, and appreciate your work. :)

The first half of 2017 was definitely up over 2016, but I'm unsure about the second half. If I had to guess, I'd say the second half of 2016 was greater than the second half of 2017. We'll see near the end of January when Eiren releases all the figures.

The Japanese box office has enjoyed increases for five-consecutive years (2012-2016) in both revenue and admissions, so I'm hoping 2017 continues the trend.

And Happy New Year everyone.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Happy New Year!
Weekend Actuals will be delayed for a few days, likely all the way until Thursday (1/4), due to New Year and January 2nd and 3rd being Bank Holidays.

I'll post Weekday Estimates for the week, though, since this week is one of the three strongest weeks (along with Golden Week in April/May and Obon Week in August) of the entire year.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Happy New Year!
I don't think Star Wars: The Last Jedi will reach the next major milestone, the ¥10 billion (Uber-Blockbuster) milestone, but there's still a small chance (at 60+ days), so here's the Fastest list just in case (and to save me time from looking it up later):

Fastest to ¥10 billion (Uber-Blockbuster) - 90 Days or Less

25 - Spirited Away (2001)
28 - Your Name. (2016)
28 - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
30 - Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! (2003)
31 - Ponyo (2008)
33 - Howl's Moving Castle (2004)
35 - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
37 - Alice in Wonderland (2010)
37 - Frozen (2014)
42 - Beauty and the Beast (2017)
43 - Princess Mononoke (1997)
44 - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azakaban (2004)
45 - Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)
47 - Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace (1999)
50 - Avatar (2009)
52 - Finding Nemo (2003)
52 - Toy Story 3 (2010)
52 - The Last Samurai (2003)
53 - The Wind Rises (2013)
53 - Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)
53 - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
57 - The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
78 - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2004)

Note: Not enough data available for a few films that likely would make this list, primarily including: Titanic, Armageddon, Jurassic Park, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and Antarctica.

If The Last Jedi does make this list, it'll join The Force Awakens and The Phantom Menace as the only three Star Wars films to reach the milestone.
