Also, if anyone has any data on The Exorcist, please share. It hasn't been included in any all-time lists in Japanese articles/sources, but its foreign total ($208 million) suggests it had to earn a significant sum from Japan at the time.

According to IMDB, The Exorcist made $5.7m in Japan, but that total was recorded as of the year 2000.

Disappointing about Godzilla. It almost seems like the theatrical release was a late decision (or afterthought) to grab a little more money before flooding it to Netflix worldwide.

That sounds accurate.

How many screens did Shin open to? I have recorded 448, but can't recall where I got that figure from.

I would consider Red Dragon a horror film, and that amassed $17m back in 2003. And Hannibal Rising made $6.4m. Not that they are too impressive at the box office, but the Saw films are obviously horror. Saw IV made $3.4m back in 2007. It really depends how low you want the grosses to be in order to include more. Though Shutter Island did $16m. I'd consider that horror. It was definitely marketed as a horror/psychological thriller. And what about Signs. Aren't aliens considered part of the science-fiction horror genre?

How about Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street? That made $19m. It's about a serial killer, musical or not. Sticking with Burton, Dark Shadows made $27m. Isn't it about a family of vampires? And Black Swan is pretty scary! That made $27m too.

I'm also surprised not to see Interview with the Vampire, The Blair Witch Project, and The Silence of the Lambs on the list, though I have no idea how well they did in Japan.

There are others, too, that have crossover and did well enough in Japan to feature on this list, but which I guess are not strictly horror (but have horror elements) such as Resident Evil, The Haunted Mansion, Queen of the Damned, Hide and Seek etc. Alien Resurrection did $16m, and the first is definitely considered horror. Maybe you could include the fourth, depending on how horrific you feel it is.

Anyway, some food for thought at least.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

The cut off to make the list is ¥1 billion, which, depending on the year, usually ranges from $8 million to $13 million or so (slightly lower/higher in certain years). The vast majority of horror films don't reach this milestone.

Red Dragon -- I'll include it.
Shutter Island -- Isn't this one primarily a thriller?
Black Swan -- This one is definitely more of a psychological thriller to me unless several others disagree.
Alien -- You said the original is definitely horror, so I'll look it up. Do the numerous sequels/spin-offs become more sci-fi and/or action-heavy?

Regarding the Tim Burton films... maybe? Dark Shadows I'd lean toward excluding -- it's not scary, and is a bit too comical. Sweeney Todd... perhaps -- I think I'll add it unless someone objects.

And pretty much all the others, are as you said, just have horror elements such as Resident Evil, so I'm going to restrict them; otherwise, the top of the list will be heavily action-oriented and knock many more traditional horror films off the list.

That's correct. ~450 screens is about as wide as any domestic release goes, unless they're released in other formats such as 3D, IMAX, etc..

>IT climbs to the #1 position in its third weekend of release, delivering an amazing third weekend hold, following an even more impressive second weekend increase from last week. After three weeks, the horror flick has sold over 870,000 admissions.

So far, both its second and third weekends have been greater than its opening weekend. It has already exceeded a multiplier of 6 (6.18) as well, and nothing should slow it down anytime soon -- at least not until Star Wars/Yo-Kai Watch slash holdover screens/theaters again for a third-consecutive year. I'm going to project it'll at least double its current three week total, exceeding ¥2 billion (~$20 million), and could reach ¥2.5 billion (~$25 million).

>High & Low 3: Final Mission actually managed a decent second weekend hold, and despite debuting 14% below its predecessor, it should finish within 10% of its total. The third film in the High & Low film project has exceeded 500,000 admissions.

>Godzilla: Planet of Monsters disappoints with a third place debut, although it did managed to open above ¥100 million thanks to a rather high avg. ticket price. Toho's first in a planned trilogy of animated films in its Godzilla franchise, and 30th overall release, sold 71,205 admissions across 158 screens over the weekend frame (and 102,085 since opening on Friday).

>Thor: Ragnarok falls to fourth place in its third weekend, and is on the cusp of exceeding the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone now. Not only is the milestone considered the commercial success mark in the market, but it's also the mark that most Marvel/DC films strive for with only 59% of them (and just 45% when excluding Spider-Man films) making it.

>The Stand-In Thief comes in fourth place over the weekend, selling 66,970 admissions over the weekend on 225 screens. The debut is certainly mediocre, but it does come in rather well in comparison to most other live-action Showgate releases, so I'm sure they're fairly satisfied.

>Logan Lucky manages an eighth place debut in an incredibly close battle -- less than $3,000 separated the bottom three Top 10 films -- at the bottom of the Top 10. The film sold 46,161 admissions over the weekend on 304 screens. This is obviously a poor debut, but there were no expectations here, so... shrug*

>And a special mention: Kubo and the Two-Strings finally debuted in Japan, but only managed to earn ¥10,829,900 ($97,000) on 8,128 admissions across 48 screens.

Shutter Island and Black Swan are thrillers.
The original Alien is horror, Aliens is not. The other sequels/prequels are debatable, but I think they could be included.

Speaking of Alien I know Covenant never made it to 1 Billion yen. Is it done finally? What was its final take?

It loses it's final theater, in Yokohama, on Saturday.

I don't know its final gross, or gross up to this point, but its last available tracking figure was at ¥826 million ($7.3 million) near the end of October. It'll probably finish around ¥850 million ($7.5 million), certainly a disappointing result.

Kimi no Suizo wo Tabetai will be screen in my country. I'm wondering if it's well received in Japan, both review and box office perspective so I'll judge if it's worth watching or not.

I was checking IMDb for upcoming releases in Japan, and I noticed Boss Baby is getting a release on March 21 next year. I found this very unusual since this would be a full year after its theatrical debut elsewhere, not to mention it's from Dreamworks (who have a very poor record in Japan). Is this going to be a limited release type of thing?

Let us know what you think. As you mentioned, it was a big success in Japan this year, becoming the second-highest grossing live-action domestic film so far, and being the leggiest wide release overall this year (and cracked the All-Time Top 20 since 1998) as well.

Films being released a year later in Japan isn't too unusual -- there are several recent examples being A Dog's Purpose and Hidden Figures which both debuted just eight weeks ago, and Kubo and the Two-Strings just opened last week.

In regards to The Boss Baby, it is opening March 21st next year. It's being distributed by Toho-Towa, so I doubt it'll be a limited engagement, which is surprising. If it ends up being a wide release, or even receive any sort of limited release, it'll be the first Dreamworks Animation film to receive a theatrical release in Japan since 2012's Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted.

It's also surprising they scheduled it 5 days after the opening of Pixar's Coco. Given the incredible WOM that film is having around the world, putting Boss Baby right after seems like a recipe for failure.

Surprised that Toho-Tawa is releasing a Dreamworks movie. Is there a new tie-up or something?

Fox still distributes in Japan, and to my knowledge, still hold the distribution rights to Dreamworks. I'm not sure why (or how) Toho-Towa is already distributing The Boss Baby unless I missed something about Fox having already sold distribution rights to Universal, which I didn't think was happening until 2019? Toho-Towa owns the distribution rights to Universal in Japan, so they'll soon have the distribution rights to Dreamworks, too, as a result.

IF it's true that the Fox/Universal deal has already taken effect, then Toho is going to have a monopoly on the box office earlier than expected. Toho-Towa is a Toho subsidiary that handles the distribution of imported films, and they already own Universal and Paramount distribution rights.

Toho itself already claims nearly 40% of box office revenue, and has been for a decade strong now, and that percentage approaches/exceeds 50% when Toho-Towa is included. Once they handle Dreamworks, if they don't already, I'm betting Toho will claim 55/60% of the box office.

I forgot about the Universal acquisition of Dreamworks that must be it, probably earlier in Japan. Japan being a big animation market and Dreamworks primarily being an animation studio hasn't done well in Japan, so probably a good platform for this new alliance.

I'll post the Weekend Actuals & Chart Updates tomorrow evening.

Justice League debuted at #1 but its debut was very lackluster, to say the very least, earning the lowest opening weekend of 2017 for a Marvel or DC film.

Versus other DC films, it opened:

48% lower than Suicide Squad
45% lower than The Dark Knight Rises
45% lower than Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice
44% lower than Superman Returns
39% lower than The Dark Knight
30% lower than Batman Begins
24% lower than Man of Steel
23% lower than Wonder Woman

The only silver-lining that came from its opening was its #1 debut -- it's actually the FIRST DC film to ever debut at #1 in Japan (excluding the 1970s/1980s), despite its opening being much lower than all but the likes of epic bombs The Green Lantern and Catwoman.

>Justice League becomes the first DC film to ever debut atop the box office in Japan (at least since 1990), but its opening weekend is also lower than every other film currently in the DCEU (as seen in my previous post). Over the weekend frame, the DC team-up only sold 133,500 admissions on 639 screens, and the early release on Thursday has brought its four-day admissions up to 285,373 admissions.

All of the DCEU films have at least managed to exceed the ¥1 billion (~$10 million) milestone, and this one should as well, but it'll probably finish with just ¥1.1/1.2 billion ($10/11 million).

>IT falls to second place after rising to first place in its third weekend last week, but still managed to post a great hold in its fourth weekend. The film has exceeded 1.1 million admissions, and is well on its way to exceeding the ¥2 billion (~$20 million) milestone and becoming one of the highest-grossing horror films of all-time.

>Hibana: Spark certainly disappointing, and isn't the way Toho wants November to end for them. The live-action adaptation of the tv drama based on the Hibana novel only sold 82,404 admissions over the weekend frame across 318 screens, bringing its four-day admissions up to 164,513 admissions since opening on Thursday.

>Godzilla: Planet of Monsters experienced a rough second weekend drop, suggesting it'll only finish with around ¥500 million ($4-4.5 million). As I've mentioned several times, the release of the film made it clear that Toho wasn't expecting much from the film, but at the same time, a total well below even ¥1 billion seems disappointing.

>Thor: Ragnarok suffered a harsh drop in its fourth week following severe screen/showtime cuts, and dropped out of the Top 10; however, it has exceeded the ¥1 billion milestone, becoming the first film in the series to reach the mark and will outgross MCU own Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 from earlier this year.

It fluctuates all the time, but it has remained pretty consistent for the majority part of 2017 (since March). $1 has ranged from about ¥109-114 for most of the year, meaning ¥1 billion has equaled about $9 million, give or take $0.1 million or so.
