Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Charts Updated!
I wonder if Pirates can again do $100m in Japan though that seems unlikely with the current exchange rate.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Charts Updated!
$100 million will require a gross north of ¥11 billion which would put it above Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End -- the highest grossing film in the franchise. This is incredibly unlikely.
However, signs are very good for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales heading into the weekend, and while I'm expecting another drop in the market, I'm thinking it'll be minimal.

Yeah I thought so with the current exchange rate $100m would be too big of an ask. Would be interesting to see where it lands in terms of admissions.
Oh also didn't realize BatB entered all time #20 in Japan. I don't think it will reach $12B mark with Pirates releasing next week.

Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Actuals; Charts Updated!
No worries; it's going to do very well.
I'm checking some locations this morning, and many of them already have numerous half-full or better showings throughout all of Saturday. I'm estimating that it's sold about 25-30% of its available admissions at some popular and key locations for Saturday, 1.5 days out.
It's definitely ahead of Beauty and the Beast at the same point in time in pre-sales.
There's also a high chance that it'll be the widest release of all-time, which we'll know for sure in 8 or so hours. Unsurprisingly, since we're coming out of typically weak June, the film is occupying the biggest screens at every theater, and is averaging 13/14 showtimes (some locations have it playing 20-25+ times a day).

Re: Japan Box Office: Pirates 5 Debuts This Weekend
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales ends up being a mega release, as expected (borderline widest release ever):
In terms of seating, it only trails 2016's Alice Through the Looking Glass by ~11%.
In terms of showings, it sets a record beating Star Wars: The Force Awakens by ~10%.
The fifth Pirates film would have claimed the seating record, but Toho is giving Shinobi's Country an impressive release this weekend. Final theater/screen counts aren't available yet, but Pirates 5 appears to have set the theater count record as well, which in turn suggests the screen count record will be in play.
And as predicted, Beauty and the Beast was delivered a major blow, losing ~61% of its seating and ~39% of its showtimes compared to last week despite it still playing very well (second place at the box office). Such a drastic decline regularly happens to Disney films that have been in release for a long period of time (10+ weeks) when another major Disney film opens, no matter performance, so the decline was to be expected.
Also, I saw end date notices at some theaters dropping Beauty on July 6th (next Thursday), so it'll probably see another sharp decline next week before likely going limited/out of theaters the following week.

Any early prediction for Mary and the Witch's Flower and is it going to be a wide release or not?

Re: Japan Box Office: Pirates 5 Debuts This Weekend
It has a very wide range, so it's really a wait and see situation. And of course it'll be a wide release.
As for this weekend, I'm going to post hourly admission updates for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales because it's a ¥1 billion+ debut contender.

Re: Japan Box Office: Pirates 5 Sets Sail For ¥1 Billion Deb
Very, very good; it's selling almost 50% of its available seats. Just compare it to the six films below it -- the ¥1 billion+ openers since 2015 -- hour by hour. The numbers above are real hourly admissions from almost 70% of the market.
As of the 3PM update, its admissions are tracking:
63% ahead of Beauty and the Beast 14% ahead of Star Wars: The Force Awakens 08% ahead of Detective Conan: Darkest Nightmare 04% behind Detective Conan: Crimson Love Letter 05% behind One Piece Film Gold 30% behind Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan!
Granted, today is the 1st of the month so tickets are discounted, so its admissions are inflated and the percentages will be lower in terms of revenue, but it's very impressive nonetheless. Sunday will be noticeably weaker as a result, but a ¥1 billion+ debut is looking doable (at the very least, ¥900 million+ should be assured).
The best comparisons are the two Disney films, while the worst is Yo-Kai Watch since that skewed so young (strong morning/afternoon showings, dismal evening/night showings). I expect it'll follow a similar trajectory as Star Wars for the rest of the day.

Re: Japan Box Office: Pirates 5 Sets Sail For ¥1 Billion Deb
An incredible first day for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales - it's likely the biggest opening day (definitely in admissions) for an imported release since 2011's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2.
It's bound to see a noticeable drop on Sunday (though ticket sales look strong to me, likely from spillover) since Saturday was inflated due to being on the 1st of the month (discount day), but even a major decline is going to result in a great opening weekend.
I'm projecting a debut for Pirates 5 around ¥1.1/1.2 billion ($10/11 million) on ~800,000 admissions. This start would be on par with its predecessor (I'll post a Pirates of the Caribbean Box Office History later today).

Those admissions numbers are insane. Imagine if it keeps up the pace with a decent WoM? Corpse does this opening mean it will be able to cross $90m now in Japan?

Hi Corpse,
Do you have any early signs for Pokemon 20 which is now only two weeks away ? I would expect early sales to be noticeably stronger compared to last year if only because of the nostalgia factor. Can you confirm or disconfirm ?

Its opening is roughly on par with its predecessor (probably up slightly in admissions, but down slightly in revenue), and similar legs will get it ¥8 billion ($70 million+) or so. Weekend Estimates will be posted in an hour or so.
