Rogue One is enjoyable, but I don't think it's in the upper tier of Star Wars films. It has a saggy mid-section as a sense of aimlessness sets in. Characters run from planet to planet with varying video game-like objectives (Find this person! Find that thing! Find that person!), but there's no building sense of anticipation (or dread) that we're close to a goal.

The third act is great, though, and I suspect a lot of you will come out feeling more positively than I did (Darth Vader gets the type of scene you've been fantasizing about for decades). I liked the film, but I didn't love it.

I think the third act will save this from being looked down on.

The Vader scene is fan service in its purest sense. But, Jesus, I loved it. Of course I fucking loved it.

I did not love the uncanny valley Tarkin. At all.

I was bothered more by his clearly-not-Peter Cushing voice than the uncanny valley, haha.

I thought they hit the voice pretty well.

I heard it is dark and far from a rehash, which makes me happy

I am happy that they went with that ending which is one of the good things about the movie. The Vader scenes are going to get the biggest cheers from fans, also the joke "Really? I am blind" would do it for sure.

Sadly though the praise ends here. Edwards handles the visuals well but storytelling is lacking here which could easily be attributed to the screenplay and this being a spin-off that has a one-liner story stretched for 2+ hours. The first act is all muddy we are introduced to random characters and places in a haphazard manner. The middle is purely a search. The final act is the actual SW destruction porn that most fans would love but for me it just overstayed its welcome mostly because we are never invested in these set of generals and army of rebels.

Vader scenes though are really great in this and he is only in a couple of them. His voice though lacks the heaviness but its a non-factor. The older cast were visibly photoshoped in here, which will be a huge problem for these spin-offs going forward.

5/10

I figure rankings are inevitably coming, so here are mine:

The Empire Strikes Back
A New Hope
Revenge of the Sith
The Force Awakens
Rogue One
Return of the Jedi
Attack of the Clones
The Phantom Menace

Vader's scene leaked to YouTube. It's cool, but I was expecting "Achilles takes the beach" level of badassery.

That leaked cam is missing all of the build up to the moment.

That's only because of Vader's history.

Nothing compares to Batfleck going HAM in the warehouse.

I don't remember him pulling out a sandwich??? Though with that movie, I blocked a lot out.

What?

I meant the general and the princess and if they keep using these characters for these spin-offs. I hope you noticed how heavily they were CGi'ed.

they were *completely* CGI'ed. peter cushing died in 1994. and carrie fisher hasn't looked like that for even longer.

OK. My bad the "completely" CGI'ed characters.
