Post Disney developing live action James and the Giant Peach
In an attempt to replicate their recent success with The BFG, Disney is in talks with Sam Mendes to direct a live action version of another Raold Dahl novel, James and the Giant Peach.

Quote:
Sam Mendes in early talks to develop and direct James And The Giant Peach, a live-action project in the works at Disney with Nick Hornby penning the screenplay. We’re hearing the talks are in the very early stages.

Yet another needless remake given the fact that Henry Selick's 1996 stop motion version was already the perfect film adaptation.

I see no problem in making the film itself (The BFG will not be the biggest flop of the year [already at $153m against $140m budget and with a few markets left to open, notably Italy and Japan and a possible China]), but Mendes is better than this.

I'm not a fan of the original, but I remember liking the book, so maybe it was just the adaptation I didn't like?

Will probably bomb.

That goes without saying.

Wasn't the 90s stop-motion adaptation a flop?

It was, yes. It cost $38m and it didn't make even $35m from the three biggest markets back then. It definitely made a profit eventually. I remember it being solid on rentals in the UK. I think the stop-motion style wasn't that popular back then (well, it still isn't now).

The '96 James and the Giant Peach received critical raves @ 93% on RT, just like it's stop-motion descendant Kubo @ 96%.

Quality is the death knell for the BO run of kid's movies.
