>Shin Godzilla reclaims the #1 position atop the box office, its third non-consecutive week on top, and did so by only dropping 11% - an extraordinary hold coming out of the Obon Festival holidays, largely thanks to its incredible WOM thanks to it's strong critical and audience reception.

Hideaki Anno's (Evangelion) and Shinji Higuchi's reboot of the iconic franchise has effortlessly exceeded the ¥4 billion milestone (its expected finish upon opening), and is going to cruise past the ¥5 billion ($50 million) blockbuster milestone now, too, and is in excellent condition to even reach the ¥6 billion ($60 million) mark. And if it does exceed ¥6 billion, it'll very likely becoming the most-attended Godzilla film in 50 years.

>The Secret Life of Pets slips to second place, but is continuing to perform very well with a great second weekend hold. It's not going to quite match the success that was Minions, but it's on course for a total likely over the ¥4 billion ($40 million) milestone - making it the highest-grossing non-Disney/Pixar imported animated film in the market behind its studio predecessor.

>Ghostbusters debut in Japan, coming in third place selling 160,260 admissions over the weekend frame across 701 screens. And since opening on Friday, and after including last week's previews, its running total has reached 289,511 admissions. The debut is a bit underwhelming, though it's quite strong for an imported comedy featuring a female cast. The film is expected to finish around the ¥1.5 billion ($15 million) mark.

>Yell for the Blue Sky, directed by popular shojo manga director Takahiro Miki, is off to a respectable start, selling 163,736 admissions on 281 screens over the weekend. Legs for live-action shojo adaptations are generally strong, so this opening is more than enough to yield a total over ¥1 billion ($10 million), and gives it a slight chance at ¥1.5 billion ($15 million), as well.

>Finding Dory holds on better post the Obon holidays than estimates suggested, though it's still down more than it wants to be at this stage. It's fallen further behind Monsters University, trailing it by 11% now, and with Summer Vacation coming to an end in two weeks, it's losing any chance it may have had to make up ground.

I'm actually not confident that it'll reach ¥8 billion ($75 million) after this weekend, and it could find itself finishing below Zootopia (¥7.8 billion) as well. Japan will end up being its best international market, but it's finishing below expectations here for sure, which is worrying for a Pixar, which has begun to struggle a bit in the market, if the sequel to their most-successful film is under-performing.

Kinda disappointed with the One Piece opening and total. Its releasing here in Singapore this weekend along with Shin Godzilla. OP has a huge marketing campaign here while SG's marketing seems very muted.

One question outside of BO Corpse, do you know why Anime movies started making movies completely unrelated to the storyline? I thought having some tease or a connected arc would get more seats in theaters.

One Piece Film Gold isn't matching the performance of its predecessor, but it's performing perfectly fine. An opening above ¥1 billion is always a major success*, and it's the third-consecutive film in the franchise to do so (first domestic franchise to achieve this), and it'll eventually exceed the ¥5 billion blockbuster milestone.

*Here's how many films in each year from this decade that have opened above ¥1 billion:

2010: One (Alice in Wonderland)
2011: Two (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2; Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides)
2012: Two (Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo; One Piece Film Z)
2013: Zero.
2014: One (Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth)
2015: Two (Star Wars: The Force Awakens; Yo-Kai Watch: Great King Enma and the 5 Stories)
2016: Two (Detective Conan: The Darkest Nightmare; One Piece Film Gold)

Probably because seeing a new story on the big screen has appeal to fans as well. However, a lot of anime films do feature canon material. The last three One Piece films, for example (including Gold), have content that's considered canon. What anime franchises are you specifically referring to?

I saw OP:Gold yesterday and couldn't see much of Canon material aside from a reference or two to the team and Doflamingo (the team has separated in the main story even before Doflamingo arc started and aren't even close to meet each other, so I don't see how Gold could exist somewhere after that). I have seen Naruto, Bleach, Fairy Tail and OP films with some other random Anime movies, but most of them are separate movies even though the characters are same they are all standalone movies, OP:Gold is also perfectly watchable without the prequel Heart of Gold as well.

I also thought Baruto was helped last year being a continuation to Naruto's original story after it has finished.

I understand what you're saying. Remember that One Piece, and many others listed, are weekly anime tv series, so it's probably important to keep some separation between the tv series and the films; whether they're annual films like Detective Conan or Pokemon receive, or more traditional 3-4 year waits like with One Piece.

TV is still popular in Japan since demand, digital, streaming, etc.. is slow to catch on, so the same-day ratings are still incredibly important to the success of an anime and/or live-action broadcast. I imagine that having a theatrical release that's closely related to the tv show dilutes the product somewhat.

In box office related news for this weekend:

Makoto Shinkai's latest, Kimi no Na wa. (Your Name.), is looking at a breakout performance this weekend. Its Friday admissions so far are exceptional. I'm not surprised, as the film was quite anticipated and it felt unusual for it to not get an earlier release in the summer. However, while certain months are stronger than others, films can still deliver incredible openings/performances in down months if they're anticipated/well-received.

Makoto Shinka is one of Japan's most popular animated directors, and along with Mamoru Hosoda (who has already begun making a household name for himself, and his studio), is being regarded as Hayao Miyazaki's successor(s) as Japan's next big director. I'd strongly recommend catching up on Shinka's prior releases; they're great.

Hmm I get what you are saying there but then if you look at more of casual audience specially OS audience it would definitely increase the interest if they have a tease like for OP a tease for Zou in the movie before starting the arc would kinda be more interesting. Anyways I got my answer thanks for your response

Your Name., the latest critically acclaimed film from director Makoto Shinkai, is poised to deliver an incredible opening this weekend. The animated title enjoyed a huge start yesterday, likely earning over ¥300 million ($3 million+) ahead of the weekend, and its Saturday pre-sales and morning/afternoon ticket sales are very good.

Makoto Shinkai is being looked upon as one of two likely candidates to succeed Hayao Miyazaki as Japan's leading animation director. All of his prior films have been met with praise from critics and audiences alike, but none have been true box office successes to make Shinkai a mainstream, household name... however, that's about to change in a significant way if Your Name. comes anywhere near the weekend forecast. An opening this high would put the ¥5 billion ($50 million) blockbuster milestone very much in play, especially since audience scores are currently through the roof (90+% averages across the board).

Also, if it's able to debut above ¥667 million, it'll claim the record for highest-opening weekend for an original animated film not released by an established studio (such as Studio Ghibli and Pixar), besting last year's The Boy and the Beast, which happens to be directed by the other candidate being viewed as a candidate to succeed Hayao Miyazaki as Japan's leading animation director, Mamoru Hosoda.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Forecast (dir. Shinkai's Your Nam
As of noon, Your Name. is outpacing every non-¥1 billion opener (Star Wars; Yo-Kai Watch; Detective Conan; One Piece) from the past nine months. Makoto Shinkai's looking at his first box office blockbuster with his first wide theatrical release, and it's going to score the biggest debut for an original (non-Ghibli/Pixar) animated film, too.

Shinkai's earned a mightily impressive reputation with his critically-praised, award-winning, limited releases over the past 12 years, and audiences are coming out in droves to see his first wide release (many showtimes are half-capacity or better through 8PM nationwide). Funimation secured international distribution rights months ago in anticipation of this occurring.

I'll post a detailed afternoon update (~2PM) later.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Forecast (dir. Shinkai's 'Your Na
Your Name. continues to perform extraordinarily well as the day progresses, and it's built upon its leads over every non-¥1 billion opener over the past nine months. Here's just how well it's doing compared to 2016's other notable debuts (excluding the two ¥1 billion openers):

17% ahead of Finding Dory
52% ahead of The Secret Life of Pets
56% ahead of Shin Godzilla
69% ahead of Independence Day: Resurgence
78% ahead of Zootopia

It should continue to increase its lead over the three animated titles since it's not targeting kids/families like they were, so besting Finding Dory's debut is looking doable.

A debut of 500,000+ admissions, I'd say, is almost absolute certain at this point, and honestly, over 600,000 admissions for the weekend doesn't seem unrealistic either. It'll depend on its audience breakdown, but 600,000 admissions would most likely earn it an opening comfortably over ¥700 million ($7 million), if not closer to ¥800 million ($8 million).

Post Re: Japan Box Office: WKND Forecast (dir. Shinkai's 'Your Na
So there was an unfortunate router error in the system after 5PM, so the full admissions from Saturday are unknown at this time... However, based on the 2PM update and how everything was doing up until the error occurred:

Your Name. was continuing to do excellent numbers and likely exceeded 200,000 admissions at the usual locations. Sunday is also looking quite strong, so there's certainly potential for over 400,000 admissions from just the usual locations alone. That'd mean it'd have a good chance of reaching 600,000 admissions over the weekend, for a debut of ¥700-800 million ($7/8 million). Pretty insane.

>Shin Godzilla was holding extremely well as it has every single weekend, and based on its performance up to 5PM yesterday, a second place ranking with fifth weekend hold of 20% or better was looking likely. It's aiming for a ¥300 million+ ($3 million+) fifth weekend. Its biggest drop-to-date is only 21% (its third weekend).

>The Secret Life of Pets was also holding well, but was more inline with a typical 25/30% decline. This is the last weekend before school starts back, though, so it could improve a lot on Sunday, so a third weekend drop of 20-25% is possible. It'll probably come in around ¥275 million for its third weekend.

Black Widow Business was exceeding expectations quite handily yesterday, and is definitely going to make the Top 5 in its debut, possibly on track for a ¥200 million ($2 million) debut.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows is a big disappointment, and is barely going to crack the Top 10 in its debut with an opening likely below ¥100 million (sub-$1 million). And while the first film wasn't that successful in the market, it did manage a #1 debut (though over a much weaker weekend).

Image

Makoto Shinkai's (far-left) latest, and first wide release, 'Your Name.' is off to a blockbuster start at the box office before the weekend even finishes, earning ¥770 million ($7.6 million) with over 590,000 admissions after just two days in release (Friday and Saturday).

On Friday, it grossed ¥348 million ($3.4 million) on 270,000 admissions
On Saturday, it grossed ¥422 million ($4.2 million) on 320,000 admissions.

And Sunday is even bigger than Friday or Saturday, so once it's recorded, its opening weekend frame (Sat. and Sun.) could end up near ¥900 million ($9 million) with over 650,000 admissions, bringing its first three days in above ¥1.2 billion ($12 million) with over 900,000 admissions.

Toho is projecting a total of ¥6 billion ($60 million) before the weekend even concludes, but that's almost certainly low-balling given the outstanding reviews and audience reception. We're probably looking at possibly ¥7 or 8 billion ($70-80 million), or possibly more.

Source

This opening is so massive, that it easily shatters the record for biggest opening weekend for an original animated film, excluding Disney/Pixar and Studio Ghibli entries... but while we're talking about them, the opening here could be higher (admissions) than any Disney/Pixar film and non-Miyazaki Ghibli film as well!

Your Name. experiences a blockbuster opening weekend, eclipsing even the highest of expectations prior to the weekend.

Acclaimed director, Makoto Shinkai, is viewed as a candidate to succeed Hayao Miyazaki's in Japan as the country's top film director, and he delivered in every way imaginable with his first wide release this weekend.

Shinkai is no stranger to critically-acclaimed films; he's been releasing films since 2004, though only in limited release. But well-received, award-winning films are only half of the battle to achieving the title critics and audiences are bestowing upon him. And through the immense reputation he's built with his limited releases, he's hit it out of the park at the box office with his first wide release this weekend.

Your Name., based on weekend estimates (and only Sunday is an estimate, Toho was quick at releasing the numbers for Friday and Saturday), is without a doubt one of the biggest and most surprising opening weekends that I can remember. There's no precedent for an opening of this level for an original film, animated or not, that wasn't assisted by an already established director and/or studio at the box office.

Toho is projecting the film will reach a total of ¥6 billion ($60 million), a projection that's already almost 100% certain. When you factor in that it sold through nearly 50% of its weekend admissions (helping to boost the holdovers in the process via sellouts), and just how well-received it's been so far, I highly doubt it finishes below ¥7 billion ($70 million). And if audiences truly recognize Shinkai as Miyazaki's true successor, and this weekend is a strong indication that they have, then we could be looking at a potential run of much more than ¥7 billion ($70 million).

I'll provide some lists later today showcasing just how substantial this opening weekend really is.

What do you know? Your Name. came in well above estimates. You'd be hard pressed to find any film that had a more impressive opening weekend than it; in fact, I'm willing to call it the most impressive opening weekend ever (at least as far back as data goes - 1997/1998).

And we could be looking at an upcoming all-time performance from it as well.

I'll post the Weekend Actuals shortly.

>Your Name. experiences a blockbuster opening weekend, nearly an uber-blockbuster start, eclipsing even the highest of expectations prior to the weekend, delivering what I consider possibly the most impressive opening weekend of all-time in the market. There was zero precedent for this film to debut with such impressive results.

Acclaimed director Makoto Shinkai's first wide release sold a staggering 688,079 admissions over the weekend frame on 301 screens. And since opening on Friday, it sold an even more impressive 959,834 admissions after three days in release.

Shinkai is viewed as a candidate to succeed Hayao Miyazaki's in Japan as the country's top film director, and he delivered in every way imaginable with his first wide release this weekend. He is no stranger to critically-acclaimed films; he's been releasing acclaimed limited releases since 2004. But well-received, award-winning films are only half of the battle to achieving the title critics and audiences are bestowing upon him. And through the immense reputation he's built with his limited releases, he hit it out of the park at the box office this weekend with his first wide release this weekend.

The critically-acclaimed film shattered the August opening weekend record, and eclipsed the opening record for an original animated title from a non-established studio. And, it also came in above almost every Studio Ghibli film and Disney/Pixar film. In terms of admissions, it only trailed Miyazaki's last four films and Finding Nemo. And it achieved this feat on far fewer screens, too, on just 301 versus the typical 400/500+ that established studio releases receive.

Toho is projecting the film will reach a total of ¥6 billion ($60 million), a projection that's already almost 100% certain. However, when you factor in that it sold through nearly 50% of its weekend admissions (helping to boost the holdovers in the process via sellouts), and just how well-received it's been so far, I highly doubt it finishes below ¥7 billion ($70 million). And if audiences truly recognize Shinkai as Miyazaki's true successor, and this weekend is a strong indication that they have, then we could be looking at a potential run of much more than ¥7 billion ($70 million).

In holdover news...

>Shin-Godzilla experiences another incredible hold, and earned its best hold-to-date - barely dropping at all compared to last weekend. It has easily exceeded the ¥5 billion ($50 million) blockbuster milestone after just five weeks in release, and is also going to cruise right past the ¥6 billion ($60 million) mark as well - and when it does, it'll likely have sold enough admissions to have become the most-attended Godzilla film since 1966! There seems to be no slowing down for this WOM monster, so don't be surprised if it's still in the top 10 when we head into October.

>Black Widow Business managed a solid fourth place debut, selling 182,555 admissions across 318 screens over the weekend. Prior to going into the weekend, pre-sales were suggesting it may only sell just over 100,000 admissions, and it outperformed that figure decidedly well.

>Finding Dory continues to its struggle to post great/excellent holds, and not simply "good" holds. It's fallen further behind Monsters University after seven weeks in release, and is now trailing it by 17%. There's really no chance it'll make a recovery at this stage of its release, so it's going to finish just over the ¥7 billion ($70 million) milestone. That's an impressive result, sure, but fairly disappointing for Pixar and it's down a hefty 35% compared to its predecessor.

>One Piece Film Gold enjoys a healthy weekend hold in its sixth weekend, and is just shy of outgrossing 2009's One Piece Film Strong World (¥4.8 billion). It likely surpassed it on Monday, and should either be very, very close to the ¥5 billion ($50 million) blockbuster milestone after next weekend, or just over it. It's going to end up down around 25% compared to its predecessor, 2012's One Piece Film Z, though.

>Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows is a bomb, faily to even reach 100,000 admissions over the weekend frame. Although, it did crawl past that number since opening on Friday, selling 107,483 admissions after three days in relase on 542 screens. It's down a significant 53% compared to its predecessor.
