Post Re: Cell
An artist (John Cusack) is in an airport terminal when a mysterious signal turns every person on their cell phone into a violent, wild-eyed zombie. Fleeing, he unites with another survivor (Samuel L. Jackson) and sets out into a newly chaotic world to find his estranged son in New Hampshire. A Stephen King adaptation once intended to be filmed by Eli Roth, Cell is a disaster on every conceivable level. Is it frightening? No. But forget frightening. Is it suspenseful? No. But forget suspenseful. Is it at least diverting? No, not even this. The film is directed by Tod Williams, who made the well-regarded marital-strife drama The Door in the Floor twelve years ago and then returned six years later with the decent-but-inferior Paranormal Activity 2. He now returns after another six-year hiatus with this dud. (Based on this pattern, he will release the worst film in the history of the art form in 2022.) Williams displays an almost incredible inability to generate even an iota of disgust or dread or any other sensation we might expect from a tale of cataclysm via the living dead. The sleepy characters act as if the apocalypse is a bit of a nuisance; Cusack and Jackson do not embarrass themselves, but neither displays significant investment or verve, and this is just another in-and-out programmer on two impressive, but wildly uneven résumés. (The duo collaborated in a far more rewarding King adaptation, 1408, nine years ago.) The extras pretending to be zombies often provide unintentional comic relief as they gyrate and totter, at times stopping to spread their mouths wide and emit a dial-up modem sound. A subplot involving a more self-aware zombie capable of invading and influencing dreams unfolds incoherently. Unconvincing, Syfy-caliber computer-generated imagery is plentiful; one can almost count the pixels when two airplanes collide in an early scene. And the film's final fumble is a twist ending intended to be a punch to the gut à la The Sixth Sense or The Mist; the idea may be there, but the execution is so haphazard and unskillful, any potential impact is rendered null and void.

Saw the trailer for this in front of Lights Out. Looked just as bad as that review describes it.

It's amazing more consideration wasn't given to this one, since A. the zombie genre is still fairly hot, although perhaps a bit on a down trend, and B. cell phones are even more advanced and more a part of society than they were in 2006 when the novel was released.

I feel that technology has improved a lot since 2006 and whatever the plot is about feels outdated to me even in the trailer. It's like making an MSN Messenger related horror in 2016. Makes no sense.
