Re: A Hologram for the King
Tom Hanks is expectedly fantastic in this and delivers a soulful, likable performance that draws upon the best of his abilities. The movie around him is a solid piece of escapism, but feels hacked to death in the editing room - there are so many subplots that are either wrapped up unsatisfactorily or just dropped all together. The aforementioned 'hologram for the king' ends up being a complete afterthought in the grand scheme of things. Still though, it's enjoyable and crowd-pleasing, reminiscent of something like The Terminal in terms of Hanks's previous features. The romance between the doctor is brief but well played out. The movie is also visually stunning and has gorgeous cinematography, which one would expect from Tom Tykwer. I think it could have been something really fantastic with a bit of work done, but as it stands it's a solid crowdpleaser that I think older audiences in particular will probably really respond to. B

Although it was a surprise to see the live action remake of Anomalisa out soon soon, it turned out to be a pleasant surprise; much more upbeat than the original . *B+*

The movie wanders around and completely shifts focus in the second half without tying most of the loose ends but it is a good experience thanks to Hanks. Also surprisingly good is Alexander Black who matches Hanks and provides a good comic touch to the movie. Sarita Choudhury is decent here but she isn't provided with much in the film.

Re: A Hologram for the King
There is an interesting and satisfying movie hiding within the Dave Eggers adaptation A Hologram for the King, but it is undermined by unfocused storytelling. Tom Hanks is in his usual fine form—charismatic, nuanced, sympathetic—as an exhausted salesman haunted by his prior involvement with corporate outsourcing and troubled by his inability to pay his daughter's college tuition. The character travels to Saudi Arabia to propose a holographic conferencing system to the king and suspects the trip will either change his fortune or cement his inadequacy. I must say, there are elements of genuine fascination here. Around a quarter of the action unfolds at the king's proposed self-contained city in the desert, a type of chic-futuristic space promising thriving industry and luxurious living, but at present unfinished and desolate. It is a dynamic and surreal setting. And the king's conspicuous absence—no one can say when he will meet with the protagonist and his team (perhaps tomorrow, perhaps in five months, maybe never)—is a playful evocation of Waiting for Godot. But then the king does show his face, and the scene is...just wildly unspectacular. It is brief, even rushed. And this is indicative of the overall picture's problem: it is easily distracted and trips over itself as it introduces this character, drops another character, and changes theme and tone right and left. It even becomes a full-fledged romantic comedy in the final 15 minutes. It does not understand the concept of follow-through, and an A-list star's magnetism and individual moments of insight and wit cannot entirely redeem the whole.

Re: A Hologram for the King
I was not paying attention to the running time, and I was very surprised when this ended. It almost throws it hands up and says, "All right, montage time. The hero's swagger is mostly restored. Woo. Smile. Credits."
Such a bizarrely structured film. And it bugs me because Hanks is so strong here, and the ideas regarding corporate culture, ethics, masculinity, cultural confusion, etc. are sound. But almost none of it is utilized to its full potential.
