Not unusual for horror budgets to be low, but that is a great budget for The Shallows, and it will almost certainly be in the black from US alone.

That's good budget for IDR. It might not still make too much given the marketing and general buzz everywhere. Great for Shallows.

Reasonable budgets for Shallows and Independence Day Resurgence. Both should be in the black when all is said and done.
Free State of Jones is insane.

Doesn't seem insane to me. You're probably only saying that because its prospects (reviews) don't look good. But $50m for a historical epic involving lots of actors, non-green screen location shooting, which requires lots of planning etc. is not a lot. It doesn't look like it will easily make money, but I hope it does eventually.

Free State of Jones looks like a DTV movie to me, not sure why they spend so much on it.

It is also roughly 30 million less than what Cold Mountain cost 12 years ago. And Gary Ross' Seabiscuit cost an estimated 87 million. So a fairly conservative budget indeed considering it is a star-driven period war film.

That's expected the visuals do look good in the movie.

Was it really expected though?

150 million budget for a reboot of Ghostbusters just sounds idiotic, no matter how well it does.

That's still the standard blockbuster budget and while the trailers don't look funny enough do you think having male leads would have cost any lesser? No one is complaining about IDR costing $165m so I don't why Ghostbusters should look comparatively out-of-the-world bad. With that horrible OD I see Ghosbusters making more than IDR domestically and it has a good OS appeal as well.

I don't see what's so bad about that budget. Seems pretty standard to me. Will probably do about that domestically and overseas, so it will probably at least break even.

Damn. Did they think they had a guaranteed blockbuster here? How many original children's fantasy movies have been huge blockbusters? Besides Spielberg and the popularity of the book (which rarely translates to movie success), there was no reason to think this was a 140m guarantee.

Given the heavy graphics nature and Spielberg's name attached to a well known property I was sure BFG will be a big budget movie. Regardless its not going to do big numbers.

Including next weekend's openers BFG & TARZAN, the first half of the year has seen 16 (!) movies with budgets of more than $100m. In 2015 we had 11 at this point...
And in 2016 we had three movies with budgets of $200m+ so far, compared to one in 2015...

I really like how a film like The Purge easily makes a profit with just its domestic opening weekend alone.
