Only naive people would think that a boycott movement from people who weren't going to watch the film anyways would do anything substantial to a movie's gross. If people are boycotting the film, it's because the 2nd film is shit and has little to do with a person's stance. The boycotting campaign is just starting. And you forgot about Jackie Chan. He basically went from a box office star to a box office poison.

Re: HK 2/4 THU: Good Dinosaur #1 for now; Alvin 4 flops
The boycott is just starting? The real boycott started years ago when Wong Jing started to cater more toward the China market. People aren't going to boycott his movies because of what he said. That's silly. People will watch what they watch and it has nothing to do with the umbrella movement or democracy. People trying to market it as such shows how fucked up Hong Kong people are that they're pushing a movement as some sort of stand against the Chinese government when in reality, these people have not been supporting his movies for years and are just pretending that they're boycotting. This will have close to zero impact on FVTM3's box office and it is not an argument to explain why its total will go down. The reasons why it will go down in box office are that the 2nd film was terrible and so less people chose to watch it this time and the onslaught of openers on its opening week limited its box office potential. Anything other than these 2 reasons are inconsequential and not worthy of mentioning.
Please stop trying to bring politics into this thread. This is the Hong Kong box office thread, not the Hong Kong box office and politics thread. If you want to talk about politics, take it elsewhere. I'm done trying to sift through your posts when the majority of them are slighting, shaming or blaming governments or cheerleading democracy and contribute nothing to the discussion.

You easily jumped to conclusion without looking at precedents. Jackie Chan was boycotted by audience and you see how his films did at the box office. You are not stating the facts. From Vegas to Macau II (also directed by Wong Jing) was the #1 HK movie last Lunar New Year. I did not notice any conscious boycotting then. Also, Wong Jing, unlike other older-generation directors such as Tsui Hark or John Woo, did not move away from HK. His studio still produced movies targeting non-mainland Chinese, movies that would be inaccessible to China, such as Black Comedy and The Gigolo 1 & 2. The reasons for the boycott of Wong Jing were clear: his demeaning comments and bullying during the last year. When pro-democracy HK actors Anthony Wong and Chapman To and singers Denise Ho and Wong Yiu-Ming were blacklisted by the Chinese government, he joined in the bullying and kowtowed to the Communist Party by tweeting to his mainland Chinese followers, "I will unfriend these anti-China, trouble-making colleagues of mine.". But the fact was, Denise Ho and Wong Yiu-Ming did not even know him personally. When HK's property price has skyrocketed during the last decade, he appeared on a tv show and called all HK youth who could not afford to buy an apartment "trash". That's worse than Mitt Romney's 47%. There were a lot more outrageous public comments and smearing of the pro-democracy movement and ass-kissing the CCP by this scumbag director that I could list.

LW | TW | Movie | Last Thu. (USD) | Thu. (USD) | % chg | Theaters | Days | Total |
-- | 1 | The Good Dinosaur | -- | $107,242 | -- | 39 | 1 | $107,242 |

1 | 3 | Dirty Grandpa | $57,847 | $33,380 | -42.3% | 34 | 15 | $1,118,404 |
The Good Dinosaur is doing OK. It's slightly behind The Smurfs in gross but its Saturday/Sunday will be very strong and overtake Smurfs' weekend gross. It is the biggest animated CNY release in the past 7 years. Alvin and the Chipmunks 4 tried to go up against The Good Dinosaur and failed. It is going to make less than Alvin 3's OW by a big margin. The rest of the top 10 varies from the admissions top 10 4. House of Wolves (#4 in admissions) 5. Ip Man 3 (#8 in admissions, $7,513,587 total) 6. The Revenant (#5 in admissions) 7. The Big Short (#6 in admissions) 8. Ten Years (#7 in admissions) 9. Survivor (#10 in admissions) 10. Star Wars 7 (#9 in admissions, $10,480,397 total) The big news is that Ip Man 3 was in the top 5 and rose 3 places from its admissions ranking. Perhaps its admissions are not being counted properly. #4-#10 on Thursday won't factor that much into this weekend as all of them will see major cuts on Saturday. Pre-sales for Sunday, Monday, TuesdayFrom Vegas to Macau 3 is very close to selling out a fair number of shows on Sunday night and Monday. The Good Dinosaur is looking very good on Sunday afternoon and Monday afternoon though pre-sales are not quite as robust as FVTM3. The Monkey King is doing alright. Alvin 4 is empty at most places. On Monday, The Mermaid is looking great with midnights and 3 PM shows but not nearly as good at other times. On Tuesday, Deadpool is a bit slower than The Mermaid's Monday pre-sales so far. It is playing well in IMAX all day but only a couple of showtimes are barely half full on Tuesday vs. nearly 75-80% seats sold for about 50-60 showtimes or The Mermaid on Monday.

From Vegas to Macau 3 wins Saturday in admissions but loses to The Good Dinosaur in gross. The Monkey King had a decent Saturday but Alvin didn't see the same growth today.

All Chinese language films saw the biggest increases on Sunday. Powerful for From Vegas to Macau 3. Night shows for From Vegas to Macau 3 are nearly full so what today will come down to is how well From Vegas to Macau 3 does during the afternoon and how The Good Dinosaur does at night. Good for The Monkey King 2. It beat out The Good Dinosaur in the number of pre-sales added from Saturday. Weak for Alvin 4.

Re: HK 2/6 SAT: Macau 3 #1 in adm.; Mermaid Mon.; Deadpool T
From Vegas to Macau 3 is pulling away from The Good Dinosaur but it is not out of the woods yet. The Good Dinosaur can still come back at night.
Early Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday pre-sales
Monday
1. The Mermaid - 33,749 admissions (42% capacity filled) 2. From Vegas to Macau 3 - 32,568 (49% filled) 3. The Good Dinosaur - 15,295 (30% filled) 4. The Monkey King 2 - 12,545 (23% filled)
Tuesday
1. Deadpool - 25,770 admissions (32% capacity filled) 2. From Vegas to Macau 3 - 14,875 (31% filled) 3. The Mermaid - 12,566 (23% filled) 4. The Good Dinosaur - 9,600 (24% filled) 5. The Monkey King 2 - 4,931 (15% filled)
Wednesday
1. Deadpool - 13,926 admissions (19% capacity filled) 2. From Vegas to Macau 3 - 7,484 (16% filled) 3. The Good Dinosaur - 6,801 (18% filled) 4. The Mermaid - 5,656 (11% filled) 5. The Monkey King 2 - 3,103 (9% filled)
From these admissions, From Vegas to Macau 3's business is mainly contained to the holidays. Wednesday it has fallen behind The Good Dinosaur in % filled. Mermaid is really strong on Monday but it falls behind on Tuesday/Wednesday. Deadpool looks good on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Good Dinosaur maintains a presence on each of the 3 holidays. The Monkey King 2 follows The Mermaid's trajectory.

Excellent for From Vegas to Macau 3. It nearly matched From Vegas to Macau 2's entire sneaks with just its opening Sunday. Add in Macau 3's opening day numbers + Friday sneaks and it is close to $300,000 up on From Vegas to Macau 2 without any holidays added to its gross at the same point in time. This is not a comparison between Day 2's but about matching up the holidays with each other. From Vegas to Macau 2's sneaks - 34,752 From Vegas to Macau 3's 2-day opening weekend + sneaks - 60,375 ( +73.7%) The Good Dinosaur had a very disappointing increase. I expected at least a 50% increase with essentially another holiday on Sunday and night shows helped by the holiday Monday. Word of mouth does not seem to be that great for it with it coming in behind Alvin 4's score this weekend. The Monkey King 2 did pretty well to recover after the slow start on Friday evening. Slightly better for Alvin 4 though its Sunday was lower than Alvin 3's opening day.

Decent opening weekend for The Good Dinosaur, however, Sunday was disappointing. At this rate, 2.5m is still happening although 3m might be a stretch. Very good 2 day opening weekend for From Vegas to Macau 3. It's an encouraging sign when the top film increases the most on Sunday. The Monkey King 2 rallied from a low Friday sneaks opening and is making inroads on The Good Dinosaur with each day. Alvin 4 had a poor opening weekend. It will open with a 1/4 less than Alvin 3's opening weekend although that occurred during the holiday period. Still, the film has not even come close to reaching Alvin 3's OD admissions even with Sunday helped by the holiday. It will have to hope its strong user score of 4.4 will help in the coming days otherwise it might end up with a lower total than the 3rd Alvin film. Dirty Grandpa fell fairly hard with the new openers in play and its dailies will keep on shrinking but it should be able to grab onto 1.5m before leaving theaters.

Close battle at the top. The Mermaid will likely win since it has filled less seats than From Vegas to Macau 3. From Vegas to Macau 3 has filled more than half of the seats allocated to it today and will be hard pressed to sell the front row seats that are left. Weak increase for The Good Dinosaur. The Monkey King 2 is edging closer to The Good Dinosaur. Solid jump for Alvin 4 though it is still not great compared with Alvin 3. Tuesday pre-sales at Palace APM (taken at 10:30 PM)

Very good for Deadpool. The Mermaid has the big screen at Broadway/AMC theaters so Deadpool's admissions will be capped at almost all B/AMC locations. Decent for The Mermaid although its Tuesday pre-sales are lacking the same punch as its Monday pre-sales have done so far. Excellent for From Vegas to Macau 3. Not bad for The Monkey King. The Good Dinosaur is not doing as well as the expected top 3 of Deadpool/Mermaid/Macau 3. 2D combined is over 70% filled while 3D is only 1/3 filled. Overall, Deadpool is looking good for #1 from Tuesday-Friday right now but both The Mermaid/From Vegas to Macau 3 could see huge spikes toward the end of Monday.

Re: HK 2/8 MON: Big battle (Mermaid/Macau 3); Deadpool Tue.
2 PM Update: The Mermaid is well out in front of From Vegas to Macau 3 in admissions. Both Mermaid and From Vegas to Macau 3 are selling out a lot of shows. 3/4 new openers have already eclipsed their Sunday final admissions with only The Good Dinosaur left to do the deed.
Updated Early Tuesday, Wednesday pre-sales
Tuesday
1. Deadpool - 36,391 admissions (45% capacity filled) 2. From Vegas to Macau 3 - 21,492 (44% filled) 3. The Mermaid - 20,100 (36% filled) 4. The Good Dinosaur - 14,336 (35% filled)
Wednesday
1. Deadpool - 19,841 admissions (27% capacity filled) 2. From Vegas to Macau 3 - 11,883 (24% filled) 3. The Good Dinosaur - 10,653 (27% filled) 4. The Mermaid - 9,796 (18% filled)
Very good for Deadpool. From Vegas to Macau 3/The Mermaid trail off quite noticeably on Wednesday. The Good Dinosaur is pretty steady in pre-sales.

Very good for the top 3. The Mermaid has moved the most from yesterday, up more than 400 admissions. Deadpool gained about 150 and From Vegas to Macau 3 added nearly 100. From Vegas to Macau 3 has the highest percentage of the top 3 filled with 5 shows over 85% sold compared to 1 each for Deadpool, Mermaid and The Good Dinosaur. The Mermaid will see 2x more admissions than Deadpool or From Vegas to Macau 3 when tomorrow's walk-ins are included. Deadpool is playing very strongly at night and is the champ over The Mermaid but The Mermaid is well above Deadpool in the morning and early afternoon and is ahead in the late afternoon hours.

Behind them, The Monkey King is playing very well with or without 3D however the Good Dinosaur is struggling a bit with 3D. 2D showtimes are over 80% full while only 1 3D showtime is 70% full.

The Mermaid...wow. That is much stronger than Journey to the West: Conquering the Demon's OD. Mermaid's word of mouth is pretty good too with a 4.3/5. This could make over 3.5m total if word of mouth reaches out far enough. The Mermaid might have made the top 10 OD of all time. From Vegas to Macau 3 also did great.

From Vegas to Macau 3 is handily ahead of the 2nd's sneaks and the first day of the new year. Day 4 will be included because the 2nd film had CNY Day 4 on its OW (Sunday). Day 4 for FVTM3 will be much lower than Macau 2's. The Good Dinosaur only rose 3,500 admissions from Sunday. The Monkey King went up more than 5,500 admissions from Sunday and closed the distance from itself and The Good Dinosaur. Alvin 4 had a better increase but it still has not matched its OD admissions even with the holiday.

The Hobbit | 18,440 | +139.8% |
Mission Impossible 4 | 24,390 | +81.3% |
It does not beat out the most robust of blockbusters but it takes down everything else. What is especially encouraging about that number is that it has about 1/2 or 1/3 of the showtimes that the others had. Deadpool only has 1 or 2 screens max while the others got 4-5. Apart from Deadpool, all the Chinese language films fell by 20% on Tuesday. Animated releases were hardly affected at all as both The Good Dinosaur/Alvin 4 increased.

It is huge. Only 1 or 2 screens everywhere to make money and it is slapped with an equivalent to NC-17 rating (no admission under 18). Holiday or not, if this makes the top 10 OD, it will be the most impressive OD ever IMO.
2 PM Update: Deadpool has eclipsed 52,000 admissions. The Mermaid is above 35k. From Vegas to Macau 3 is sitting above 32k.
Deadpool might be headed for 60k admits while The Mermaid should be above 40k. From Vegas may get to 36k.

10 | The Martian* | $750,000 | $5,817,917 |
If this estimate turns out to be true, Deadpool will be only the 2nd film released in 2D to make the top 10 opening days of all time. Other factors that hindered Deadpool's potential opening day gross include not enough screens (theaters only placed this in 1 or 2 screens -- attendance rate was extremely high), the dreaded Category III rating (equivalent to a NC-17 rating in the US) and not all theaters were showing this. Though people will argue that it was released on a holiday, these 4 factors are huge in limiting gross. This is a truly impressive opening day, probably the most surprising given that it is not a sequel to a well known release either. Places that reported a sellout today for Deadpool: MCL Telford Pacific Place Palace IFC Palace APM Paris London New York Milano Tuen Mun (UA) Tuen Mun (Newport) Cityplaza The GRAND Kornhill Cinema City Yuen Long Kwai Fong Hollywood The ONE Tsuen Wan Kingswood Ginza Cyberport STAR Metroplex Other theaters may have recorded sellouts but these are the ones I was able to find. The Mermaid and From Vegas to Macau 3 saw huge dips on Day 2 of CNY with Deadpool snatching away screens and showtimes but these are still humongous results. Animated films were not affected by the 18+ Deadpool as both animated openers fell just 5% and 6%. The Monkey King 2 fell the hardest due to being the worst performer of the CNY of 3 Chinese films.

Re: HK 2/9 TUE: NC-17 Deadpool #8 OD of all time!
I already heard people say the movie is tame for a NC-17 movie. And to stroke people's curiosity, Fox (HK) has decided to screen a IIB (or PG-13) version Saturday and Sunday. The version will be 10 seconds shorter than the current III (NC-17) version.
Deadpool NC-17 (Uncut version) 107m 59s Deadpool PG-13 (Special treatment version) 107m 49s

To be fair, it opened on a holiday and had midnight showings which counted towards OD. Midnight showings alone had over 10,000 admissions.

Day 4 for FVTM3 will be much lower than Macau 2's. It should be mentioned From Vegas to Macau III had 70+ (+25%) more showings than FVtM II at the same point through Monday. With Deadpool opening on Tuesday, its showtimes were cut to the same level as the sequel (~270 showings).

i.hope wrote: To be fair, it opened on a holiday and had midnight showings which counted towards OD. Midnight showings alone had over 10,000 admissions. Ughh, can you stop putting a damper on its opening day. It is amazing. End of story. I'm going to address your two arguments below anyway. Midnights: First of all, most of the movies on that opening day list had midnights too. Second, there is no way that Deadpool made 10,000 admissions from midnights alone. You have to consider that some theaters did not participate in midnight showings then from the ones that did, some of them only showed one midnight showing. Some theaters did give it 2 showings and a few 3 or 4 but some theaters gave it small screens as well. Then there's the big issue that many people in HK do not like to watch movies at midnight. Midnights are becoming more of an occurrence but these are still only used for blockbusters and not for any major film. Even at a very generous 150 people per showing average at its very best, I only get around 8,000 admissions. No doubt not enough screens pushed some people to watch it at midnight but many just don't watch films at midnight like N.Americans do. Holiday: I've already mentioned about the holiday in my post but Deadpool's opening day being a holiday shouldn't make people less excited. This had many things going against it: 2D, not all theaters are showing it, original film, 1-2 screens maximum and Category III rating. The fact that it had 1 or 2 screens maximum plus the loss of children should counteract any holiday effect. Besides, holiday or not, this is an impressive number; one that should not be diminished by when it opened but celebrated that in this day and age that it is still possible for a film like this to post such an astounding result. ________________________________________ So what you're really saying is that with a quarter more screens, From Vegas to Macau 3 did a quarter better than its predecessor. I don't really see your point here. If you're saying that 2 did better than 3 in admissions per showing average, it didn't. Also, Days 3 and 4 will be better for From Vegas to Macau 2 anyway with Days 3 and 4 falling on Saturday/Sunday but 3 will come charging back on Days 5/6/7.

Over 10,000 attended midnights. This is what I got from Ryan, who has access to the data. It says the movie played in 33 theaters for 50 showings at midnight and recorded over 10,000 admissions. Per-showing-average was over 200. Deadpool is doing great, I don't disagree. I don't know about the saying many people in HK do not like to watch movies at midnight. Hong Kong is a night city. The streets are busy at night in districts like Mong Kok and Causeway Bay. Theaters open overnight on Christmas eve and the two new years' eves. As for From Vegas to Macau III, we will see the results soon. Its day two and day three are already falling behind the sequel with less competition than last year.

Re: HK 2/9 TUE: NC-17 Deadpool #8 OD of all time!
It's still impossible for 10,000 admissions to happen. He's saying that 1/6 of Deadpool's OD came from midnights and it is the best 2-fer punch of the entire day. Better than 3 & 5 PM, 5 PM and 7 PM, 7 PM and 9 PM. I've already mentioned the above factors of why midnights would not be the biggest combo of the day and what it boils down to is that midnights are simply not popular with people here. I've tracked many films with midnights even those with holidays on opening day and they are not popular at all. If he's saying that 10,000 admissions happened, that is about $130,000 in gross which is absurd given the amount of competition. Also, his opening day projection is too low. He's basically saying that Deadpool and From Vegas to Macau 3 are nearly identical in ratio when Deadpool has IMAX and Macau 3 does not.

Big drops for all the live action films with many going back to work on Thursday. Cartoons were not affected and increased. That is a strong hold for Deadpool considering Monday midnights inflated its drop a bit.

Oh my, you are arguing with data. Yes, it had a per-showing-average of 200 for midnights versus 190 for the rest of the day. Midnights are big on holidays. I lived there before. I know it. Here is a screencap of tonight's 11-ish showings. Most seats are already filled and tomorrow (Thursday) is NOT a bank holiday.

Re: HK 2/9 TUE: NC-17 Deadpool #8 OD of all time!
As the holidays are wrapping up, most releases see the number of shows drop by 20%. But Deadpool is unaffected. It has about 330 shows on Wednesday, the same as Tuesday. The theaters are adjusting based on its performance.
