Still feeling pretty solid about my A- grade. A very good movie for what it was, but nothing spectacular. But better than anything the MCU has to offer with the exception of possibly Guardians.

In teaser trailer #2, he says "You have that power too" at the end, making it sound like he's talking to a character in the new film and that gave me chills - I truthfully had forgotten that it was quoting Jedi verbatim and I thought this was new dialogue that echoed that. So though it's a little deceptive, perhaps it was simply meant as a teaser foreshadowing of who the girl is. In any case it's cool and I am very satisfied with the final product, and have renewed chills for what awaits in Episode 8.

The biggest question I have leaving the movie is who exactly is Snoke? Many of my friends think he is either Darth Plagueis the wise or even possibly the Emperor. I'm kinda hoping he is darth plagueis. What do you guys think?

Snoke definitely needs to be somebody damn huge in the galaxy in order to so deftly have an empire up and going since Jedi. The Plagueis theory makes more sense than anything - the writers will have their work cut out for them to make something more compelling. The filmmakers are saying it's not him, but what are they going to say if it is him? They obviously can't confirm it and spoil Ep. 8.

Plagueis is essentially the reason why Anakin turns to the darkside. In ep.3 Palpatine tells Anakin the tradgidy of darth plagueis the wise. A sith lord who could manipulate mitochlorians to create life or to keep himself or others from dying. Plagueis was Palpatine master and upon learning everything he knew from him, Palpatine killed him. (Or so he says).

axiom is right, even if Snoke is revealed as Plagueis - i doubt anyone other than die-hards would know or care.

Looking back at the book cover the darth plagueis novel, snoke looks very similar plagueis. If it's not him, I hope it is darth bane. Now that's a name only die-hard would know.

Snoke does bare a resemblance to a muun (those banking clan guys, and Plagueis's species), and if he's really Plagueis, it fits pretty well within the story and connects the dots. It just seems so... I don't know, lazy, predictable? This theory has been around for about 10 years now, so it's not really going to surprise anyone, especially with the theory resurfacing again thanks to the new film.

I'd be okay with Snoke being Plagueis, but I'm hoping he's a new character, perhaps of the force-wielder enigmatic species.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

I'm not a Star Wars fan. I've never really understood the hype and interest, so I couldn't appreciate and enjoy The Force Awakens on a fandom level (which perhaps makes my opinion more objective), but it was an entertaining film - the best Star Wars film ever, actually. JJ Abrams can be really proud of himself. He did a stellar job creating a love-child from the DNA of all the original instalments. It felt so Star Wars-y that one might honestly believe it was a secret, fourth, unreleased OT movie. Apart from Han Solo dying (which was a GREAT idea) the film was fairly safe, keeping within the confines of the universe while also adding some new things.

Harrison Ford slipped right back into the role of Han Solo, and he just felt right. That might have been my favourite thing about the new movie. Close competition, however, came from Adam Driver as Kylo Ren. The character, much like Guardians of the Galaxy's Ronan, was a fantastic and dark hench-villain, and I liked it (and he was also controlled by a superior, hardly-seen overlord). The new additions of Finn and Rey were fine too, and joined the Star Wars line-up of British actors nicely. I am torn on whether I think Oscar Isaac's Poe Cameron (was this name inspired by Con Air?) was a good addition or a bad one. He's a terrific actor, and he wasn't really in it much, so I guess he was ok. However, I am sure on Princess Leia, Chewbacca, R2-D2, C-3PO, and Domhnall Gleeson all being out of place. They just felt unneeded. Leia, a 65-year old woman; what would she be doing working for an army of resistance fighters? I feel that was purely fan pressure to include her, and Chewbacca, and the old droids. Talking of droids, what a cutie the BB8 is. Adorable. Loved it.

Was it just a remake of A New Hope? Well, yes. But does anyone watch a Star Wars film for narrative originality? Nope. It was all harmless fun, and it was non-stop adventure. It was good old-fashioned summer popcorn entertainment, just instead released in winter. It's light, relies heavily on nostalgia, and doesn't really propel the franchise thematically beyond 1977, but I will say it again, it was entertaining. The scene at the end with Luke was a tad fan-wanky (with the never-ending stare at one another), but it was probably needed to draw together the point of the entire film; find Luke.

This was my most enjoyable cinematic experience with Star Wars, and I have seen A New Hope, The Phantom Menace, and Attack of the Clones in cinemas. The Star Wars tradition of introducing great villains in the first of each set of films continues. Darth Maul, Darth Vader, and now Kylo Ren.

Agreed. A Star Wars film that I want to see again. This film is so much better than the PT in so many ways.

Just read through this thread and the only person I agree with every point on is David. He really seems to have his shit together.

But David liked it a good bit less than you.

Just one grade less. He wanted something new and creative whereas I knew it would largely be a fan servicing instalment. But his critique is still correct. It just doesn't affect my overall enjoyment as much as it does for him.
