The Reloaded wom-killed-it myth will never die. Well until no one remembers the movie.

It sure as fuck didn't help. For a movie to make $130+ million in four days (back in 2003) and then miss a $300 million total does not speak of amazing WoM.

Of course it wasn't amazing wom. For some anything less would have been a disappointment. It's exactly the holds I was predicting before release (155/320) and I was expecting fairly good wom. Its as far a fanboy a demo as you can get. Dark/R/Sequel/SciFi. Did Underworld have bad WOM? Why would a non-sequel like Underworld not hold better than MR (holidays/weekdays taken into account)?

Also, it held really well after the first two drops. And a lot of franchise films with good wom improve thier holds.

Would you say Attack of the Cloes had astounding WoM? It was fanboy-driven, it made $110 million in its first four days (same release date) and finished with $302 million.

Why are you bringing that up given TPM? Would you say TPM had good wom? Without families SW wouldn't hold nearly as well. Even if AOTC got only 25/100 from families that changes the multiplier completely. Oh, and SW is far more inspirational (or at least tries to be).

Did wom get worse with each of the prequels? There are so many other factors at play.

Ironically TDS uses the same argument to indict Reloaded that I use against the Ring.

So, in other words, if you argue that TDS is wrong, you agree that you are wrong on The Ring?

Because The Ring had a multiplier above 8 as a horror movie. That's all the fucking argument in the entire world that I need.

If it were that simple. I don't know of any other reason for the Ring's sequel to drop. First sequel; Ring was a sleeper w/o hype; and while it certainly had a good gross, it wasn't as maxed out (Scream sold about the same number of tickets with an R).

Maybe: 50% of the Ring's viewers loved it.
25% thought it was decent
25% disliked it.

It was just divided compared to other wom driven movies and far from unanimous. I'm not denying its run was driven by wom. The people who didn't like it didn't prevent wom from spreading much.

I think the main reason you are claiming this is because back then you predicted a $70+ million opening for The Ring Two, were so sure of it and then were left surprised when that didn't happen.

It dropped because to many many audiences it seemed like a second sequel. The Grudge was the film that did benefit from The Ring's success more than The Ring Two.

We all over predicted Ring Two. It was the classic "sequel to a WOM monster so it has to open to huge numbers" philosophy which has failed more often than not.

Yes, but to deny that The Ring had terrific terrific WoM is just silly, IMO.

So, I reconsidered the assumptions I made with that prediction.

Why would someone hold it against The Ring Two if they knew that The Grudge wasn't directly related?

Just because The Ring Two struggled, doesn't mean people "held anything" against it.

They did not hold it against it, but they have just seen enough of the Asian-style horror by then. The trend has passed.

People also tend to underestimate how much a seasonally appropriate release date can help. The Ring is a nice reminder of that. When you release your sequel on a different release date it feels like a major dump.

Also, The Ring was sort of a lightning strikes once phenom - not all sequels have the same demand. How good is My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 going to do for example? Like 20/80 maybe?

PA and Saw would seem to be proof positive that a seasonal date and releasing in 2003 would have done wonders for Ring 2. And on Asian horror as a trend, if it wasn't passe when Ring 2 released, it sure was afterwards. I can remember how toxic WOM felt around it.

Doesn't it usually fail with movies that are already brands (Avengers, Iron Man, Hunger Games, Star Trek, Bond)?
