Post Re: The Duke of Burgundy
An eerie, elegant, and hypnotic examination of a sadomasochistic relationship shared by an older lepidopterist (Sidse Babett Knudsen) and her student (Chiara D’Anna). On the surface, the educator seems to dominate her pupil, but their bond—defined as it by artificiality, regulation, role playing, and repetition—is complicated as their feelings deepen and evolve. This film is a profoundly cinematic confection, with any number of high-test art-house comparisons springing to mind: the fastidious detail of Wes Anderson, the lurid pop provocation of Ken Russell, the debauched aristocratic grief of Luchino Visconti, etc. Almost playing as a ghost story without ghosts, it is clearly set in a heightened reality—the entire town, it seems, is populated with fashionable, melancholy women consumed by the study of moths and butterflies, and there is nary a man or car or sign of mundane day-to-day life in sight—but the emotions and the arc of the heroine's struggle to shape the direction of their curious life together ring true due to a pair of dynamic and rigorous lead performances. Their grit and honesty almost perfectly meets the retro-chic-gloomy aesthetic halfway. Another fine touch is a gently hovering, porcelaneous score by Cat's Eyes, the dream-pop side project of Horrors vocalist Faris Badwan.
