Maze Runner 2 adds 3D to its repertoire this week but UA is the most intent of the 4 big theater chains to switch Maze Runner to 3D. Broadway/AMC will only give schedule it on 3D with 1 or 2 showings. The real surprise is that out of the 2 business district theaters, only 1 3D showtime will be shown on Thursday. Usually they will gladly run 3D for most of a film's run. Even Inside Out did not switch to 2D until its 5th week at those theaters. Maze Runner 2 will be shown on 2 screens almost everywhere. Pre-sales remain the best of all films on Thursday. Everest shuffles into theaters in 3D and 2D. 3D will mostly be used for the morning and 7 PM showtimes. Pre-sales are slow once again. American Ultra heads to theaters behind the expected top 2 in Maze Runner 2 and Everest. Scheduling is all over the place with some theaters behind the film with full day showtimes while others like MCL are only leaving this with 3 showtimes. Pre-sales are very slow. Guia in Love, The Merger and La Famille Bélier are the other openers on Thursday this week but won't be contending. The 2nd Attack on Titan film, End of the World, will be released on Saturday. Pre-sales are not bad so far. It will be interesting to see how the addition of Titan will affect both the new openers and holdovers this weekend. No Escape and Love Detective remains the big holdovers this week. At this stage, Love Detective has a better outlook than No Escape with more theaters showing this on Thursday. No Escape is gone from half of UA theaters. PK drops back down to 6 theaters with Everest kicking into IMAX this week. Besides those 3 holdovers, there will be a massive culling of the rest. Pixels and Hitman shrink to just 1 theater on Thursday and Mission Impossible does not fare much better with 2. Inside Out has longevity on its side as 10 theaters will keep it on weekdays for another week. Worthy of noting is that the one theater that is giving Inside Out a 7 PM showtime on Thursday is surprisingly beating out all other films' 7 PM showtimes at this moment.

Decent for Maze Runner 2. Judging from these admissions Thursday will be down by more than 50%. Mediocre for No Escape. Great for PK.

How does Scorch Trials stack up to the first film's OW?
Here in Oz it is flat with the first film.

Here in Oz it is flat with the first film. Its OW ($1.89m) is up about 30% from the first film ($1.45m). Its screen count is also up about 28% from the first film.

Here in Oz it is flat with the first film. Maze Runner 2 opening weekend actual - HK$14,881,802 [ $1,917,765], more than 200,000 admissions OW ( +32% from Maze Runner - HK$11,273,894 [$1,45,2827]) It's a great opening weekend even if it did not hit 2m OW. It will make it to 4m. MR2 should make more than the last Hunger Games movie here unless if the finale effect spurs a major increase.

Not good for Everest. Mediocre for Maze Runner 2. Awful for American Ultra. Very strong for PK despite the loss of the Airport IMAX theater. Iffy drops for No Escape/Love Detective. Man, these are some downright abysmal numbers. #3 did not even hit 500 admissions in pre-sales. Yikes.

Everest did not do that great. Judging from last weekend's previews, admissions increase on Saturday was below 50% which suggests families/weekend crowd are not interested in this type of movie. Maze Runner 2 had an iffy drop from opening day. Yes, there was some rush factor but reviews for the film are only decent so weekend drops will be mediocre. It will win Saturday/Sunday in admissions this weekend. American Ultra got high and never took off. Average for No Escape. Weekend hold this weekend will grow larger and larger due to theaters having to make room for Attack on Titan 2. Great hold for PK once again. Terrible for Love Detective. Meh for Three Cities. Boring opening for Guia in Love. Excellent hold for Boychoir.

Weak increase for Everest. Better for Maze Runner 2. It should squeak out an admissions win today. PK is doing very well. Ghastly for American Ultra. Not good for No Escape, Love Detective or A Tale of Three Cities. Superb hold for Boychoir.

Some have given Everest/Maze Runner 2 less showings this weekend to accommodate Attack on Titan 2 while others have increased showtimes, taking away from other holdovers/American Ultra. The addition of Attack on Titan 2 will push everyone from #3 on downward below 1 spot. Pre-sales for Attack on Titan 2 look alright for now. It certainly was not as brisk as the first film.

Well well, Everest jumps 74% with Saturday pre-sales. Bad hold for Maze Runner 2. Poor opening for Attack on Titan 2. It did not even beat Attack on Titan's opening day Thursday pre-sales. Excellent for PK. No Escape had a harsh drop. Due to many special screenings this weekend, some upcoming films have jumped right into the top 10 on Saturday. Our Times and Wong Ka Yan both make their debut. Boychoir seems to be slowing down. Awful hold for Love Detective.

Some of the numbers are different from Cinetel's because other places are reporting different placements/numbers on Thursday. I have tried my best to piece together Thursday's numbers. Not good for Everest. Maze Runner 2 dropped heavily. Not bad for No Escape though weekend drops will be larger. American Ultra flopped. Excellent hold for PK.
| Saturday | | | | September 19 |
Rank | Movie | LW | TW | WKD % chg | QD % chg |
1 | Everest | -- | 25,492 | -- | +78.5% |
2 | Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials | -- | 25,090 | -- | +67.4% |
3 | Attack on Titan: End of the World | -- | 11,875 | -- | -- |
4 | PK | -- | 3,867 | -- | +47.6% |
5 | No Escape | -- | 3,060 | -- | +26.9% |

9 | Inside Out | -- | 1,107 | -- | +200.8% |
10 | La Famille Bélier | -- | 864 | -- | +40.3% |
Surprising that Everest won in admissions on Saturday. Terrible for Attack on Titan 2. It lost to the first AOT film by nearly 2,000 admissions...and that was on a Thursday. Great for PK. Not so good for No Escape. Laughable increase for American Ultra. Inside Out rockets back into the top 10.
| Weekend Projections | | | September 17 |
Rank | Movie | TW | % chg | Total |
1 | Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials | $775,000 | -59.6% | $3,142,000 |
2 | Everest | $772,000 | +432.4% | $915,000 |
3 | Attack on Titan: End of the World | $212,000 | | $212,000 |

5 | No Escape | $109,000 | -57.6% | $1,500,000 |
Tough call this weekend as Maze Runner dropped quite hard and Everest is not doing very good either. Attack on Titan 2 is a massive failure. Wonderful for PK. Good total overall for No Escape.

Re: HK 9/17 PRO: Everest deadlocked w/ MR2; AOT2/AU flop
So it looks like Attack on Titan - Part 2 is going to be a bust everywhere, then. How much is its opening weekend down compared to the first film? In Japan, it's looking at a 40-50% drop-off.

In Japan, it's looking at a 40-50% drop-off. Well, if those projections hold, it would be down 68% from the opening weekend of the first one, but it's not a fair comparison since the 2nd film only had 2 days on its opening weekend compared with the traditional 4 that the first AOT film had. Did Attack on Titan open on a Saturday in Japan as well?

Everest might be starting to pull away slightly from Maze Runner 2. Not good for Maze Runner 2. Poor for Attack on Titan 2. Excellent hold for PK. No Escape was down by a hefty margin from last Sunday. Horrible for American Ultra. Boychoir is fading. Strong hold for Inside Out. Bad for Love Detective.

All domestic films open on Saturday, unless it's the week before a major holiday weekend (or period, like New Year or Obon), then there's sometimes the rare weekday opener(s).

Due to Sunday's higher than expected drops, the top 3 were all adjusted down. Maze Runner 2 wins over Everest with the traditional 4 day opening but Everest can be considered the winner if you add in its previews.

After a 2 week vacation, HK MPIA released last week's box office totals. Better for Maze Runner 2. Meh for Everest. Awful for Attack on Titan. No Escape fell hard. PK is doing great. Amazing to see Inside Out still in the top 10 after 9 weeks.

Solid hold for Everest. Mild starts for both Office/The Intern. Office's admissions seem to be limited to the morning only while Intern is doing better at night. Not good for Maze Runner 2. Ouch for Attack on Titan 2. Superb hold for PK. Hotel Transylvania 2 will begin sneaks this weekend. The Martian will open with previews on Wednesday. It's possible that we might see Martian get previews on the Monday holiday as well.

Pretty good start for The Intern. It is getting rave reviews with a huge score of 4.8. Decent hold for Everest. Ok start for Office. Another pretty big drop Maze Runner 2. Weak for Attack on Titan 2. Strong hold for PK. Thursday estimates1. Everest - $79,2902. The Intern - $76,7323. Office - $51,1554. Maze Runner 2 - $46,039/$3,491,336 5. Attack on Titan 2 - $319,719 6. PK

Intern is really turning it on. Great increase. Everest is chugging along while Office looks like it's lagging behind. Terrible hold for Maze Runner 2. Very good hold for PK. Windsor Cinema has officially re-opened under the MCL brand after UA's lease expired. First showings will begin on Saturday.

Intern is firing on all cylinders. It is looking at a Thu-Mon weekend figure of over $900,000. Everest posted a solid hold. Kind of weak for Office. Terrible hold for Maze Runner 2. PK is still doing very good business. Good for Our Times. Not all that good for Hotel Transylvania 2 but this will play much stronger on Sunday/Monday.

Really strong for Intern. Decent hold for Everest. Not good for Office. Steep declines for Maze Runner 2/Attack on Titan 2. Great hold for PK. Hotel Transylvania 2 did not do all that great with walk-ins. Perhaps Inside Out still playing at a handful of locations is affecting its previews.

Great for Intern and Everest. Maze Runner 2 had a much better hold today due to the Monday holiday. Office is slowing down at an alarming rate. Mega jump for Hotel Transylvania 2. Expect another bump on Monday. Awful for Attack on Titan 2. It was one of two to decrease on Sunday and it was off 65% from opening Sunday. Excellent for PK.

Other weekend estimates: 6. PK - $97,000 ( -25%)/$565,000 7. Hotel Transylvania 2 - $67,000 (sneak previews)Wow for The Intern. It is over performing in HK. Its 4-day weekend would be equivalent to 33m in USA alone. Reviews stand at an incredible 4.8/5. 5-day weekend will be over 1m. Everest held up great considering how Intern did this weekend. 2m will happen by Monday or Tuesday. Maze Runner 2 had a rough hold but it will pass 4m with ease by next weekend. Office was the major loser this week. It featured a star-studded cast but failed to connect with young audiences. I thought the trailer was a huge miss as it did not mention what the plot was about. Attack on Titan 2 had a terrible hold falling 44% from its 2-day opening weekend last week. The holiday Monday did not seem to help affairs as it fell on Sunday from Saturday. Outside the top 5, PK continues its great run. Also in the mix was Hotel Transylvania 2's special screenings. By Monday, it will have grossed over $100,000 in previews. Tomorrow will feature 5-day projections/estimates and perhaps an update on how The Martian is doing.

Strong increases for Intern/Hotel Transylvania 2/PK. At #11, is Inside Out. I saw a couple of sellouts for IO today. Pretty remarkable in its 11th week with Hotel T 2 out of the gate. There is a small chance this makes the top 10 today.
| 5-day Weekend Projections | | | September 24 |
Rank | Movie | TW | % chg | Total |
1 | The Intern | $1,070,000 | | $1,070,000 |
2 | Everest | $760,000 | -2.7% | $2,010,000 |

5 | PK | $140,000 | +7.7% | $608,000 |
Other 5-day projections: Hotel Transylvania 2 - $130,000 (sneak previews)Intern begins with a huge opening. Not many people saw this coming. It'll pass 2m by next weekend. Reviews are shaping up to be superb with it still marking a 4.8/5. Everest is holding up pretty well. 3m might happen in around 2 weeks time. Maze Runner 2 might not be holding all that well but it will join its predecessor as one of only 2 films to bank more than 4m. It will pass the first film by the end of this weekend. Office was not very busy this weekend. A lot of admissions came from older people and overall reception does not seem to be good. Attack on Titan 2 succumbed to the first film's bad word of mouth. This weekend turned out to be a disaster and it won't make even half of the first film. It won't even make the opening weekend of the first film. PK will close the gap and essentially tie Titan for #5 this weekend on Monday. Excellent hold to increase from last weekend. Hotel Transylvania 2 is doing pretty well in previews. It should double the first film which only got a theatrical release after the DVD/Blu-Ray came out...and it still grossed nearly 1m.

Intern really broke through and gained nearly 4,000 admissions from Sunday. The rest of the major players all took hits from Sunday. Hotel Transylvania 2 saw another big increase on Monday. Attack on Titan 2 increased which is slightly surprising since it fell hard on Sunday.

Other 5-day weekend estimates: 6. PK - $140,000 ( +7.7%)/$608,000 7. Hotel Transylvania 2 - $135,000 (sneak previews) Intern inches ever closer to 1.1m for the 5-day weekend. ___________________________________________________ The Martian seems to be doing quite well so far. Nearing half full for the 11 AM morning show already on Thursday at a few locations. Lots of places are holding back showtimes or have not released their Thursday schedules yet. Tomorrow should give us a better picture as to where everybody stands. Currently though, Martian looks to be on 2-3 screens, Intern gets 1 screen, Office gets 1 screen at Broadway/AMC. Hotel Transylvania 2 is getting mixed results so far. Most will schedule it on 3 showings though. 1 theater has it on full day showtimes while another has only given it 1 showtime.
