Re: Best Supporting Actress: who SHOULD win?
I'm rooting for Emma because it's Emma She is actually my favorite of this group though. Chastain was robbed. Dern is the least deserving (even though she's great in the movie) since she doesn't really do anything in Wild.

Re: Best Supporting Actress: who SHOULD win?
I find Dern very charming and poignant in Wild. Her presence haunts the film even when she is not in the scene. Granted, part of it may just be Laura Dern being Laura Dern. She is hard to resist.
Keira Knightley and Meryl Streep are the undeserving ones here. I believe this will go down as one of the most egregious nominate-Meryl-for-going-to-the-bathroom nominations alongside Music of the Heart and maybe Julie & Julia.

I'm rooting for Emma because obviously. Arquette should probably win, though.

Re: Best Supporting Actress: who SHOULD win?
I think this is a weak category in general. Dern has a small role in Wild but she has a couple of really great scenes and is pretty much the heart of the film.
Stone, Streep and Knightley were good but not really deserving of being in the competition.

Re: Best Supporting Actress: who SHOULD win?
I still find it sad neither of the momentous female players in Mr. Turner, Dorothy Atkinson and Marion Bailey, found any traction this awards season.

Re: Best Supporting Actress: who SHOULD win?
On a quasi-related note, I read an article recently comparing this year's true-story films to actual history, and I find one major deviation in The Imitation Game rather amusing: Joan, the character Knightley plays, was employed at Bletchley Park before Alan Turing, and the two previously knew each other at Cambridge. So the whole dynamic with her finishing the Turing-devised crossword puzzle in record time and having to defy her conservative parents to accept the job in espionage is complete fantasy. Which is fine because history is history and cinema is cinema, but I still found it interesting. In a way, the screenplay softens and devalues the real Joan just to give her a more direct empowerment arc.

David loves Mr. Turner everyone!
Meryl's performance was amazing. I would pick her for the win honestly.

Re: Best Supporting Actress: who SHOULD win?
The performances in this category:
1. Patricia Arquette 2. Emma Stone 3. Laura Dern 4. Keira Knightley 5. Meryl Streep
So...Arquette, easily.

Streep shouldn't really be nominated this year.

Easily Arquette. I love her performance and the change depicted both physically and her characters personal development and struggles in the film.

Arquette because she so convincingly aged 12 years in the span of one movie, even changing her hair multiple times to aid the illusion.

Steve wrote: Dr. Lecter wrote: Such a weak bunch, damn.... In Lecter's dream world, who's in this category? No, seriously, I doubt I can come up with even five worthy names, even though I have seen almost all of 2014 films. I would certainly nominate Carrie Coon for Gone Girl and Tilda Swinton for Snowpiercer and maybe Laura Dern for Wild, like she is already here.

Re: Best Supporting Actress: who SHOULD win?
Carrie Coon would've been a cool nomination here. Gone Girl missing both Screenplay and Score though is stupid.
