Post USC Scripter Award nominations
Quote:
“Gone Girl,” “The Imitation Game,” “Inherent Vice,” “The Theory of Everything” and “Wild’ have been nominated for the 27th USC Libraries Scripter Award.

The award, to be presented at a ceremony Jan. 31 at the Edward L. Doheny Jr. Memorial Library at USC, recognizes the screenwriters of an adaptation and the authors of the original material.

The nominees are:

“Gone Girl”: Gillian Flynn, screenwriter and author of the novel of the same name.

“The Imitation Game”: Graham Moore, screenwriter; Andrew Hodges, author of “Alan Turing: The Enigma.”

“Inherent Vice”: Paul Thomas Anderson, screenwriter; Thomas Pynchon, author of the novel of the same name

“The Theory of Everything”: Anthony McCarten, screenwriter; Jane Hawking, author of “Travelling to Infinity: My Life With Stephen”

“Wild”: Nick Hornby, screenwriter; Cheryl Strayed, author of the memoir “Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail.”

The Scripter selection committee chose the finalists from 97 adaptations. “12 Years a Slave” won last year’s Scripter.

Nothing really surprising, no?

No, not particularly. No American Sniper, but this may not be the right place to gauge a recent industry surge. More of an academic prize. It could still replace Inherent Vice or Wild in the Oscar lineup.

And, of course, the Academy will include Whiplash in this category.

Well, Inherent Vice really does not have a good shot anymore with Whiplash being ruled as Adapted, so that will go. It is Wild vs. American Sniper and I believe Hornby will prevail.

The most interesting question is whether Gillian Flynn will soon be an Oscar winner. If so, she will have won her Oscar for the novel itself. Having seen the film, it doesn't appear that it was that much of an effort to transfer it from a novel to a screenplay since it is very very true to the source and the best parts of it are right from the book.
