Tuesday (Emperor's Birthday) Mid-Day Report (02:30PM)
Usual Locations (~1/3 of the Market)

139,475 (-14%) - Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (NEW)
50,312 (+01%) - Big Hero 6 (NEW)

19,170 (-19%) - Ao Haru Ride (Week 2)
11,481 (+01%) - The Vancouver Asahi (NEW)
8,108 (-25%) - The Last: Naruto the Movie (Week 3)
7,492 (-10%) - The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (Week 2)
7,065 (-33%) - Aikatsu! The Movie (Week 2)
6,157 (-08%) - Parasyte Part 1 (Week 4)
5,957 (-03%) - Gone Girl (Week 2)
4,989 (-35%) - Kamen Rider x Kamen Rider Gaim & Drive: Full Throttle (Week 2)

*% increases/decreases compared to Sunday*

>Yo-Kai Watch is selling through ~71% of its available tickets at the usual locations today so far, which is incredible even if it's a holiday considering its record opening weekend.

If it maintains this pace, it'll probably set a Emperor's Day Record (I think this is a 100% lock) or simply the all-time weekday record. I can't think of anything that would have done more than 500,000 admissions on a weekday, which it's very likely to do, in the past even if it was an opening day... It would have required a holiday otherwise, and I don't see any film that could have done it.

>Big Hero 6 is very impressive, too. Weekday holidays are typically ~80% as strong as Sunday, so it keeping pace with Sunday so far today is very good. It's going to have a long run.

Early Tuesday predictions:

¥620 million ($5.4 million) / 560,000 - Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan!
¥295 million ($2.5 million) / 235,000 - Big Hero 6

Why would Big Hero come out on the same day as Yokai Watch? That seems like sabotage. Big Hero has a Japanese protagonist and takes place in a hybrid Japanese/American city. Seems like it could have made a lot more if it didn't open against the biggest movie ever...

But it's not Japanese. It's American. So the Japs will dislike it.

Yeah, the "Japs" didn't like fuckin' Frozen, for example. On the other side, the Ricains always receive Japanese animation with incredible box-offices (How did The wind is rising? 250M$ in the US, I think, and the record is 500M$ for Spirited away, 150M$ for Kaguya, 221 M$ for Ame and Yuki, etc.).

Your comment was stupid. Shame on you.

On the other side, I'm 100% sure that the Ricains want to destroy Japanese animation, now that Ghibli is dead. Well, sorry guys, but it won't happen!

Post Re: JP Box-Office: Weekend Ranking (Yo-Kai Watch; Big Hero 6
I think Algren just means that there are several examples of Japanese audiences rejecting Hollywood films that borrow or adapt familiar material (The Hunger Games, Dragon Ball and Pacific Rim are a few cases). However, Japanese interest in Hollywood films in general has certainly decreased in recent years, too.

None of this applies to Big Hero 6, though, because it's doing excellent. It looks well on its way to becoming Disney Animation's biggest film after Frozen, and it will probably outgross every Pixar film except for Finding Nemo, Toy Story 3, and the two Monsters Inc. films.

I don't think you can really expect any more from it.

Yeah I did mean that. But if it's doing well, then that's good.

8,206 (-23%) - Aikatsu! The Movie (Week 2)
5,882 (-25%) - Kamen Rider x Kamen Rider Gaim & Drive: Full Throttle (Week 2)

*% increases/decreases compared to Sunday*

>Yo-Kai Watch sold through ~56% of its available tickets at the usual locations on Tuesday. Once the evening showtimes began, business really died down, but this is the biggest weekday I can ever recall.

It's clear now its audience is definitely, overwhelmingly, young children, Elementary/Middle School aged kids. Its ticket sales in the morning/afternoon were gargantuan on Saturday/Sunday and on Tuesday (holiday) with no school, while it performed much better during the day/evening on Monday. This can be a cause of concern for its legs after New Year because Doraemon usually crashes after Spring Break; and Pokemon after Summer Vacation each year.

However... it achieves the biggest known Emperor's Day (beating Avatar's opening day on Emperor's Day in 2009), and potentially achieved the most-attended weekday ever. I need to continue research on the latter claim, but I still haven't found a film that looks to have earned a guaranteed weekday over 500,000 admissions in the past...

>Big Hero 6 was roughly dead even with Sunday, suggesting its audience is a bit older, with more High School students and young adults, keeping it active into the evening/night. This is a great sign for its inevitable strong legs.

Tuesday Estimates (Emperor's Day):

¥570 million ($4.8 million) / 530,000 - Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (Week 1)
¥300 million ($2.6 million) / 240,000 - Big Hero 6 (Week 1)

¥85 million ($730,000) / 71,000 - Ao Haru Ride (Week 2)
¥73 million ($620,000) / 59,000 - The Vancouver Asahi (Week 1)
¥60 million ($510,000) / 45,000 - The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (Week 2)
¥43 million ($365,000) / 34,000 - The Last: Naruto the Movie (Week 3)
¥40 million ($340,000) / 31,000 - Gone Girl (Week 2)
¥38 million ($325,000) / 30,000 - Parasyte Part 1 (Week 4)
¥23 million ($195,000) / 19,000 - Kamen Rider x Kamen Rider Gaim & Drive: Full Throttle (Week 2)
¥20 million ($170,000) / 17,000 - Aikatsu! The Movie (Week 2)

After 4-Days (Estimates):

¥2.45 billion ($20.9 million) / 2.24 million - Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan!
¥1.01 billion ($8.6 million) / 780,000 - Big Hero 6

Post Re: JP Box-Office: Emperor's Day Est. (Yo-Kai Watch; Big Her
>Yo-Kai Watch had its weakest day on Wednesday, though still pulled in around 200,000 admissions. It was actually tracking much higher earlier in the day, but business came to a screeching halt in the evening.

Its opening weekend demographic breakdown is also very telling:

49:51 (Male:Female)
49.2% - 0-10 year olds (Nursery School/Elementary School children)
44.6% - 30-50+ year olds (Parents/Grandparents)

Over 90% of its weekend audience was made up of parents/grandparents and their very young children. Only 6% of its weekend audience was represented by non-families.

This explains why it's barely selling any tickets after 6/7PM. So with parents and their children, basically its entire audience, having work/school until next week, its evening shows are dead. Christmas is celebrated in the gift exchange sense by some in Japan, but it's not a holiday so people still attend school/work until next week.

But for it to be doing the massive numbers it's earning with just very young children with their parents is very impressive, though it also limits its potential since there's only so many elementary school children in Japan.

>Big Hero 6 was very strong on Wednesday, suggesting it has great female appeal (females get half-off their tickets at cinemas every Wednesday). It only tailed Yo-Kai Watch by 20/25% for the day as it continues to catch up, quickly, in the daily race.

After 5-days (estimates):

¥2.66 billion ($22.7 million) / 2.44 million - Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan!
¥1.19 billion ($10.2 million) / 940,000 - Big Hero 6

Post Re: JP Box-Office: Emperor's Day Est. (Yo-Kai Watch; Big Her
After 7-days (estimates):

¥3.06 billion ($26.1 million) / 2.81 million - Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan!
¥1.73 billion ($14.8 million) / 1.38 million - Big Hero 6

About this weekend...I didn't have a chance to properly put together a weekend forecast, but the drops look a little rough ahead of New Year.

Yo-Kai Watch will repeat atop the box-office, but it'll probably drop 60/65% after its record opening weekend; and Big Hero 6 is looking down about 30% from last weekend based on Saturday estimates. Sunday does looks pretty good, so hopefully the drops improve a little bit. Ao Haru Ride performed exceedingly well over the past week and will probably see the best hold in the Top 10 with a 20/25% drop.

And the sole, wide, weekend opener, Princess Jellyfish, didn't do well on Saturday, missing the Top 5, and will probably barely break ¥50 million ($400-500,000) over the weekend.

Everything else looks headed for 40/45% or so weekend drops.

Overall, the final weekend in December isn't known for great holds, so this isn't unexpected. The first weekend of January, however, can see significant increases (sometimes over 50%) across the board. New Year (Winter Break), January 1st to January 12th, will provide nice numbers, being one of the three strongest periods for the box-office every year. It's just too bad that, excluding Yo-Kai Watch and Big Hero 6, and to a lesser extent, Ao Haru Ride, the rest of the Top 10 isn't too exciting.

Quote:
The first 2015 issue of Bungeishunjū's Weekly Bunshun magazine on Thursday featured an article on the return of singer Hikaru Utada. It quoted a record company source as saying that confidential talks are underway regarding her return to the music industry. The source added that it has been decided that she will sing the theme song for the final new Evangelion film "slated to open between fall and winter of next year." The source explained that Utada has one more album left on her contract with Universal Music Japan, so the company wants the Evangelion song to be the focus of the final album.

-ANN
.

Hikaru Utada is/was one of Japan's biggest artists, with over 35 million records sold (over 50 million worldwide). Her debut album, "First Love" (1999), also sold 7.7 million copies , making it Japan's highest-selling album of all-time (she also has the 4th best selling album of all-time in Japan). She still holds the record for fastest selling record worldwide, too, with 3.002 million copies sold in one week for "Distance" (2002).

She has released two previous songs for the new Evangelion film franchise. Her return has been on the minds of many for several years now. She went on hiatus shortly after the release of her 6th album in 2008.

So besides this exciting news of her possible comeback, this news nearly assures the final Evangelion film will indeed be released in November/December of 2015, which looks set to be a huge year for the box-office.

Post Re: JP Box-Office: Final Evangelion Release; Utada's Return
I should have updated this last week with Yo-Kai Watch's record opening, but since Evangelion 3.0 holds a spot on here, too, better now than to put it off again.

Opening days are very rarely reported in Japan, typically just the biggest openings or for when records are broken, so here are biggest opening days since 2008.

Weekend Estimates (12/27-28)

01 (01) ¥547 million ($4.7 million), -66%, ¥3.61 billion ($30.9 million), Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! (Toho) Week 2
02 (02) ¥454 million ($3.9 million), -24%, ¥2.05 billion ($17.1 million), Big Hero 6 (Disney) Week 2
03 (03) ¥120 million ($1.5 million), -31%, ¥960 million ($8.2 million), Ao Haru Ride (Toho) Week 3
04 (04) ¥85 million ($725,000), -46%, ¥400 million ($3.4 million), The Vancouver Asahi (Toho) Week 2
05 (05) ¥83 million ($710,000), -43%, ¥890 million ($7.6 million), The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (Warner Bros.) Week 3
06 (06) ¥66 million ($565,000), -42%, ¥1.49 billion ($12.8 million), The Last: Naruto the Movie (Toho) Week 4
07 (08) ¥58 million ($490,000), -28%, ¥1.45 billion ($12.5 million), Parasyte Part 1 (Toho) Week 5
08 (07) ¥56 million ($480,000), -38%, ¥600 million ($5.2 million), Gone Girl (Fox) Week 3
09 (--) ¥50 million ($425,000), 0, ¥50 million ($425,000), Princess Jellyfish (Asmik Ace) NEW
10 (09) ¥28 million ($240,000), -49%, ¥390 million ($3.4 million), Aikatsu! The Movie (Toei) Week 3

>Yo-Kai Watch: It's the Secret of Birth, Nyan! repeats atop the box-office, but it experiences a harsh second weekend drop. Its second weekend is, however, on par with the opening weekends for films in the Doraemon, Detective Conan, and formally, the Pokemon franchise, though.

The film remains hard to project a final total for since it's unprecedented in many ways, but it looks good for at least ¥7 billion ($60/65 million) to me. And with over 90% of its audience revealed as Nursery/Elementary School children (0-6 years old) and their parents, there's only so high it can go.

Its two week total is also greater than the totals for the majority of anime franchises (and a lot of other films, too). I'll have a list of the biggest totals after 2-weeks in release soon.

>Big Hero 6 held very, very well. The chances of it exceeding the ¥5 billion (~$45 million) milestone are very good. So despite opening with about 1/3 of Yo-Kai Watch last weekend, it won't finish too far behind it and could possible contend with it. And it looks good to outgross every Disney Animation film, besides Frozen, and all but 4 Pixar films, too.

>Princess Jellyfish got off to a very slow start. The live-action adaptation of the manga, where a son of a politician cross-dresses to avoid the political life and to be closer to his mother, helps a girl and her awkard female otaku roommates save their apartment building from redevelopment. Asmik Ace put a lot of marketing into this film for the holidays, so hopefully it goes on to have strong legs.

Drops weren't impressive this weekend, but with New Year (Winter Break) beginning this week, January 1st to January 12th, the box-office is about to see a boom.

Here's another chart I didn't update last week (busy week for me).

But last weekend earned itself the Biggest Fall/Winter Weekend and the 8th Biggest Overall Weekend (since at least 2001):

Biggest Weekends (Top 10) [2001-]

2011, 2012, and 2013 didn't have any weekend make the list, so for 2014 to have two (#2 and #8) is incredible.

Let's see if 2015 can deliver a Top 10 weekend now. Golden Week (late April) is crowded, the usual mid-July weekend looks promising, and December has the next Star Wars and Yo-Kai Watch (and possibly more unannounced blockbusters).

11 (09) ¥23 million ($195,000), -19%, ¥450 million ($3.8 million), Aikatsu! The Movie (Toei) Week 4

Note: Weekend Forecast % changes based on last Weekend's Estimates. New Year delays actual figures for a couple weeks,
so take these as very rough estimates.

>Big Hero 6 overtook Yo-Kai Watch in the daily race on Wednesday (Tuesday in gross), and has maintained a steady lead ever since. It was bound to happen eventually once schools start back, which will hit Yo-Kai Watch very hard, but doing so before the Winter Break is over is surprising.

And it's looking at possibly its best weekend to date, too, besting its opening weekend. It should be pretty close to the ¥4 billion milestone after this weekend, so it's going to reach at least ¥6 billion ($50 million) minimum and could make a run at ¥7 billion+ ($60 million+).

>Yo-Kai Watch is experiencing some severe frontloading, and even though it had a record opening weekend and should be near an incredible ¥5 billion after Sunday, it's clear the franchise is appealing exclusively to young children (94% of its opening weekend audience were children under 10 with their parents afterall). And since there aren't many children in Japan, and the number is decreasing every year, it's clear the franchise has its limit and this is probably it.

It should still be aiming for about ¥7 billion ($60 million), which is still a huge figure, especially when you consider that it'll have nearly 7 million admissions, too, since its avg. ticket price is incredibly low due to its young audience. Its admissions total won't be easy for any film this coming year to beat.

Besides the two leading New Year films, the rest of the top 10 is kinda uninteresting: The Vancouver Asahi is doing very well after its mediocre debut, and should see the biggest weekend increase after looking at Saturday numbers; The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies looks to be on track to surpass The Desolation of Smaug, but may fall short of An Unexpected Journey; Parasyte Part 1 is experiencing a late boost to its previously disappointing run, though it's a bit too late now; and Interstellar could reappear in the Top 10 this weekend.

Post Re: JP Box-Office: Best Selling Music
2014 - Best Selling Music (Artists, Album, Singles, DVDs/Blu Rays)

As expected, AKB48 and Arashi dominate the year in music once again.

The only non-Japanese/Korean artists with a spot on any Top 25 list was One Direction (19th Best Selling Album of 2014). A few South Korean groups also charted, being lead by a very, very impressive showing from Tohoshinki (TVXQ), who ranked as the 5th best selling act of 2014.

Also, the Frozen soundtrack was the 2nd biggest album of the year, selling almost 1 million copies. This also makes it the best selling movie soundtrack since Titanic.

12 (12) ¥22 million ($190,000), +02%, ¥550 million ($4.7 million), Kamen Rider x Kamen Rider Gaim & Drive: Full Throttle (Toei) Week 4

Note: Weekend Estimates % changes based on last Weekend's Estimates. New Year delays actual figures for a couple weeks, so take these as rough estimates.

>Big Hero 6 looks slightly ahead of its opening weekend admissions by about 5%, and may have delivered its best weekend to date as a result. It's going to double Wreck-It Ralph's total, having already outgrossed it by a significant amount, and it wont be long before it outgrosses most of Pixar's films (Ratatouille, Wall-E, Up, and The Incredibles are all coming up), too, and becomes Disney Animation's 2nd biggest film behind Frozen.

It may still take a couple weeks to do it, but it's likely to surpass Yo-Kai Watch (in gross at least) with a chance of reaching ¥7 billion ($60 million).

>Yo-Kai Watch... eh. It continues to drop fast, and not even New Year is benefiting it all that much. Of course, it doesn't have a wide audience with 94% of it being elementary kids, that of which it burned through opening weekend/week, but it should be holding up a little better than this.

I think it's just going to edge past ¥6 billion ($50 million) and maybe 6 million admissions. That's a great figure (especially the admissions), much higher than any Doraemon or Detective Conan film, and also bigger than every Pokemon film besides the first two, so that's a huge accomplishment... but it's kinda disappointing after its record opening weekend.

The franchise is also brand new, the first game launching in 2013 and the anime just last year, so let's see where it goes from here.

Post Re: JP Box-Office: Weekend Estimates (New Year)
Yeah, and The Hobbit number is a little higher than the estimates I posted, too. The weekend estimates were put together from last weekend's estimates (New Year delays numbers for a couple weeks), so hopefully everything goes up!
