Post Re: JP Box-Office: WKND Forecast (Hobbit, Ao Haru Ride, Aika
This weekend has some interesting releases, and all of them are doing great, but next weekend is looking too big to not discuss more.

So regarding the crazy Yokai Watch weekend sell outs a week early; I just finished checking 20 or so theaters for next Saturday and 17/20 are almost booked for Saturday with half of next Sunday's showtimes being over half-full already, too.

Some of the theaters have already posted notices on their websites regarding the film, too.

>Toho Cinemas Fuchu is warning customers that tickets won't be available at the door (only two showtimes remain below 50% full), and that parking space will be very limited over the weekend.

>Toho Cinemas Nishinomiya is also warning customers that tickets won't be available at the door and are asking customers to only bring one other person with them to the cinema on Saturday. They're almost booked for the weekend.

>Toho Cinemas Ebina has similar notices for customers, but they're asking those with advance tickets to check-in to the theaters 2 days in advance to help manage the crowds over the weekend.

And many of them are also noting that they'll begin opening the doors for customers with advance tickets at 7:30AM to begin seating to help manage the long lines. It's not uncommon for mega hyped films with a huge fanbase to have lines wrapped around a cinema for several blocks. People waited in line for over 2 hours just to get in the cinemas for Evangelion 3.0 and One Piece Film Z in 2012, and Yokai Watch is looking even bigger than them.

I think we really have a record breaking opening coming up next week. Over a million tickets have already been sold.

They should have waited for Hobbit and even Gone Girl to be released later. Gone Girl should have done better after Oscars IMO.

They're doing fine. The last Hobbit wasn't going to suddenly revive the franchise. The 82% dropoff of the first Hobbit film from The Return of the King made that evident. The Hobbit films are only making as much in total as The Lord of the Rings films grossed in 2/3 days.

And Gone Girl possibly opening above $1 million is a success. The genre isn't popular, and it'll easily beat Argo.

Yeah but generally a wait is preferred by audience and this film might get better reviews than the past two movies so it could have seen a healthy increase (much more than it is getting now).

Gone Girl might get some Oscars which could have increased its potential.

Miyazaki's films are the biggest in the country. He has 4 of the Top 10 films of All-Time (#1, #5, #6, #10). Frozen outgrossed all of them except for Spirited Away.

But are they big hits? The annual Doraemon or Pokemon films probably generate more profit than most of them due to the budgets.

Studio Ghibli films don't make much profit because they're the most expensive productions in Japan, and they have expensive TV exposure leading up to their release. TV is still very big in Japan, so marketing on the medium is extremely important to this day.

Their films since 2008 have each cost ¥3-5 billion (~$30-50 million) to produce (that's more than 5x the typical film budget in Japan), so it requires a significant box-office return to turn profit. Studio Ghibli uses traditional animation for all of their films (everything is still hand drawn), and with the amount of detail in their films (their panels/cels far exceed those of Disney's traditional animated films), it requires a full-time staff for 3-4 years at a time to complete. And Miyazaki himself takes on every single panel and is known to work several consecutive years without any vacation or extended breaks until he completes his work.

If Studio Ghibli decided to use CG for part of their films or even incorporate full on CGI, it'd be much, much cheaper, but they're not going to do that. Miyazaki said in the past that the studio would eventually stop film production, sooner rather than later, before they officially announced it earlier this year.

I honestly doubt they make a comeback, especially if audiences accept Mamoru Hosoda and Studio Chizu as their successors with The Boy and the Beast next July. If audiences haven't already. Hosoda and his studio's first official film, Wolf Children, earned more than Studio Ghibli's last two non-Miyazaki releases (The Tale of Princess Kaguya and Memories of Marnie).

Ah. Ghibli ends? That's the end of an era.

Are the newcomers using CGI to help keep their own budgets down? I've heard good things about their titles.

Nice weekend, and the Top 3 films are only separated by ~28,000 admissions based on estimates.

238,000 - The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
229,000 - Aikatsu! The Movie
210,000 - Ao Haru Ride
199,000 - The Last: Naruto the Movie
169,000 - Kamen Rider
151,000 - Gone Girl

>The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies looks to have delivered the best opening in the franchise based on estimates. If accurate, it's about a 6% increase over the opening weekend of The Desolation of Smaug from earlier this year, and 22% higher than An Unexpected Journey.

It didn't receive much of a conclusion film bump, but since The Desolation of Smaug opened on the 1st of the month this past March, its legs were very weak, so The Battle of the Five Armies should be able to outgross it (¥1.4 billion) and probably An Unexpected Journey (¥1.7 billion) as well. Hopefully it can reach ¥2 billion ($17-20 million).

>Ao Haru Ride opened higher than most of the recent teen romance films of the past year. These films always have great legs in December, approaching multipliers of 10, so this one has a good chance of exceeding the ¥2 billion ($20/22 million) milestone.

>Aikatsu! is a rough estimate since it's playing on 151 screens. And it's hard to gauge who exactly came out to see it over the weekend to determine an avg. ticket price. If it can be compared to the Pretty Cure films, then its avg. ticket price will be low, but sometimes these films attract an older male audience (otaku and/or pervs) that drive up the avg. ticket price substantially. I'm using the Pretty Cure films as the best comparison, but take its weekend estimate as a "guess" right now.

>The latest Kamen Rider performed about 15% behind last December's release, which would put it under the ¥200 million mark over the weekend. The franchise continues its downward spiral.

>Gone Girl did very well (I'd call it a slight overperformance) and may have hit the ¥200 million mark. It's below Kamen Rider in admissions, but its avg. ticket price should be much higher that the two are very close in the gross estimates.

Overall, this looks like very nice weekend with solid openings all around. It's a much needed boost to the box-office after the incredibly dull period of October/November.

And to continue the Yokai Watch updates for next weekend...

The film has sold over 1.1 million tickets with 6 days to go until release day according to Toho.

Every theater has it playing on their largest screens, but it's hard to find a single one that isn't already over 50% booked for Saturday and/or Sunday next week. And quite a few of them have all their morning and day showings sold out or nearly sold out (fewer than 20 seats remain on many 400, 500, 600+ seat auditoriums for the entire day/weekend).

It looks like the film is going to push the max capacity of attendance that a film can even do next weekend, which we figure is around the 2 million admissions mark (~90% of all showtimes on the largest screens sold out over a weekend). The only thing that may keep it from doing so are the late night showings (8PM or later), which don't have too many seats taken right now (10-15 or so at most cinemas at the moment).

The weekend admissions record is currently held by The Matrix Reloaded (1.49 million).

It's like reliving the Pokemon frenzy of 1998 according to those that experienced it.

I can see $2.5 million (although it looks a bit low), but the % increases over the past two films is hilarious. Who is responsible for such inaccurate reports??!

I guess they just want to look better by using random insane % increases then, but they make no sense whatsoever. But studio estimates (and/or Screen Daily) have been very off with numbers out of Japan in the past and rarely take local releases into account when assigning weekend rankings.

For one, how did it increase 95% over Desolation of Smaug when that film opened much higher than An Unexpected Journey did which they claim it bested by 35%?

Middle-Earth Box Office History
Opening Weekend ¥ ($) / Admissions [Screens] -> Total ¥ ($) / Admissions - Film

The Lord of the Rings:
¥910,000,000 ($6.9 million) / 618,000 [580] -> ¥9.17 billion ($70.9 million) / 6.70 million - The Fellowship of the Ring (Mar. 2002)
¥1,130,000,000 ($9.4 million) / 803,000 [643] -> ¥7.90 billion ($67.1 million) / 5.93 million - The Two Towers (Mar. 2003)
¥1,542,985,506 ($14.8 million) / 1,128,120 [729] -> ¥10.32 billion ($100.2 million) / 7.60 million - The Return of the King (Feb. 2004)

The Hobbit:
¥220,517,017 ($2.7 million) / 146,315 [878] -> ¥1.70 billion ($19.5 million) / 1.20 million - An Unexpected Journey (Dec. 2012)
¥313,266,250 ($3.1 million) / 244,577 [681] -> ¥1.40 billion ($13.6 million) / 1.08 million - The Desolation of Smaug (Feb. 2014)
¥332,000,000 ($2.9 million) / 238,000 [644] -> ¥?.?? ($??.?) / ?.?? - The Battle of the Five Armies (Dec. 2014) *Weekend Estimate*

Gone Girl was a Friday release, so that explains its $1.9 million. It earned about $300-350,00 on Friday based on estimates. That'd be the 3-day total, with its weekend being closer to $1.6 million that estimates have it at.

All the others were normal Saturday releases. Their Hobbit figures just looks really inaccurate.

No. The first two films opened on a Friday, while this one opened on Saturday. Maybe there's some mix up there then.

I could see Hobbit 3's opening day being 95% above Hobbit 2's opening day since its Saturday vs Friday, and Hobbit 2's Friday was particularly low since the next day (Saturday) was a discount day. Few went on Friday to see it.

The 35% increase over Hobbit 1 however is hard to explain.

That wouldn't explain their 95% increase over The Desolation of Smaug. As more info comes out, it's looking like it debuted less than that one in gross and admissions.

The Weekend Top 10 (Admissions) is available now, and it ranked 3rd. Gone Girl also didn't come in 2nd place as SD reported because it ranked 7th in admissions.

Weekend Top 10 (Admissions Only):

01. Ao Haru Ride (NEW)
02. The Last: Naruto the Movie (Week 2)
03. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (NEW)
04. Kamen Rider (NEW)
05. Aikatsu! (NEW)
06. Parasyte Part 1 (Week 3)
07. Gone Girl (NEW)
08. Fury (Week 3)
09. Interstellar (Week 4)
10. Miracle: Devil Claus' Magic and Love (Week 4)

I'll have more in the morning.

Corpse will Christmas and New Year help legs? I mean I know this isn't the biggest time of the year in Japan.

It is a big time of the year. :P

Christmas doesn't help so much, but New Year Week is huge for the box-office. Legs for films released from this point until then typically have great legs (7, 8+ multipliers).

I don't have time to post the Weekend Ranking this morning, so it'll have to wait until later today.

New Year (late Dec./early Jan.), Golden Week (late Apr./early May), and Obon Week (second week of Aug.) are the three biggest weeks of the year.

Films released just before these weeks are the ones you see with the 8, 9, 10+ multipliers each year.

Of the three, Obon is probably the strongest for the box-office since bigger films are generally released in July/August than in April/December.

Ghibli could release another film years down the road, but as of today they've closed their film production department.

Mamoru Hosoda has used CG in his films, and while I don't believe any budgets have been reported, they're definitely much, much cheaper than Studio Ghibli's films. Hosoda also casts a lot of unknowns to voice his films, which should help keep costs down too.

It should be noted though that Hosoda and Studio Chizu are just now becoming household names in Japan, so their budgets are likely to increase as a result as they receive more exposure.
