Post Re: $100+ million movies of 2014
Mockingjay flies past 100 million in 3 days, not 2.
$100 Million movies of 2014
Rank - Movie - Number of days to reach the mark - Date on which they reached the mark
1. Ride Along - 23 - February 8
2. The LEGO Movie - 9 - February 15
3. 300: Rise of an Empire - 24 - March 30
4. Divergent - 14 - April 3
5. Mr. Peabody and Sherman - 30 - April 5
6. Captain America: The Winter Soldier - 4 - April 7
7. Rio 2 - 22 - May 2
8. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - 5 - May 6
9. Noah - 48 - May 14
10. Godzilla (2014) - 4 - May 19
11. Neighbors - 15 - May 23
12. X-Men: Days of Future Past - 4 - May 26
13. Maleficent - 8 - June 6
14. 22 Jump Street - 9 - June 21
15. The Fault in Our Stars -18 - June 23
16. How To Train Your Dragon 2 - 12 - June 24
17. Transformers: Age of Extinction - 3 - June 29
18. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - 7 - July 17
19. Guardians of the Galaxy- 4 - August 4
20. Lucy- 19 - August 12
21. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles- 9 -August 16
22. Edge of Tomorrow- 84 -August 28
23. Gone Girl- 16 - October 18
24. Big Hero 6- 9 - November 15
25. The Maze Runner- 59 - November 16
26. Interstellar- 12 - November 18
27. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1- 3 - November 23

Despite following two well received predecessors, a mass marketing campaign, pent up demand for something enormous to see, and having the Hunger Games in the title, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 opened 35 million lower than Catching Fire. That is basically what Catching Fire opened to in 2 days. It was a much more preciptious drop than those for the Harry Potter and Twilight franchises, despite far better reviews than the Twilight sequel. Hopefully the series will rebound with the final film.

Upcoming Films [ The Equalizer, The Penguins of Madagascar

I won't say Dumb and Dumber To is definitely out yet. It's unlikely, but it could rebound over thanksgiving.

28. The Equalizer- 66 - November 30

The Equalizer is Denzel Washington's 3rd biggest hit to date. After a decent opening, The Equalizer had an oddly front loaded run, especially considering its strong hold in its second weekend against Gone Girl and Annabelle. Loss of IMAX may have hurt it a little bit, but it is puzzling why this was not able to get higher at the box office.

Upcoming Films Exodus:Gods and Kings, The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies
Leaving the List Dumb and Dumber To, Horrible Bosses 2

The Penguins of Madagascar are likely to make it, but it won't be until late December at the earliest.

Didn't realize Sony finally gave Equalizer the necessary push to get past $100m. The legs for this one were pretty weak.

D&D2 is not a guarantee even with a big opening. Horrible Bosses 2 is also not a lock for $100m, the first one had good WOM but it also had the novelty factor which this one does not have. If you look at how comedy sequels perform then generally then do drop which could lead to HB2 missing $100m. So you are not being conservative there :P

In that list if you take out one/two movies we can easily slip from 35 to 33. So there is a good chance 2014 can miss the 35 movies mark but I do agree there is a good chance we see a new record or a touchdown of 35 movies again.

You were right Jack Sparrow. ;)

With HB2 and D&D To both failing to reach 100m - 33-35 films seems about right.

^ December is generally a surprise month and we've always have one or two big surprises. November did still surge and the openings were big but not big enough as the last few years.

Yeah but the year in general is again in need of breakouts.

Okay.

The Interview will certainly not reach this mark now. Exodus is unlikely and Penguins is near impossible. Hobbit, NATM and Into the Woods still appear to be locks, but that only gets us to 31. Annie, Unbroken, Selma and American Sniper could all make it, but we would still only match the record.

My prediction is that Annie, Unbroken and one of the two wide expanders next year will get there, which will give us 34 films, which should tie 2009's second place record.

The Hobbit hobbles to 100 million in one week, faster than its predecessor.

16. How To Train Your Dragon 2 - 12 - June 24
17. Transformers: Age of Extinction - 3 - June 29

19. Guardians of the Galaxy- 4 - August 4
20. Lucy- 19 - August 12
21. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles- 9 -August 16
22. Edge of Tomorrow- 84 -August 28
23. Gone Girl- 16 - October 18
24. Big Hero 6- 9 - November 15
25. The Maze Runner- 59 - November 16
26. Interstellar- 12 - November 18
27. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1- 3 - November 23
28. The Equalizer- 66 - November 30
29. The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies- 7 - December 23

The Hobbit the Battle of the Five Armies managed to gross more in its first seven days than the Desolation of Smaug, and is 11 million ahead of its pace. Due to Christmas still being down the line for Smaug through the same point, that gap is unlikely to widen significantly, but it is still a decent performance that could have just as easily done less than its predecessor
Upcoming Films Exodus: Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, Annie, Into the Woods
Leaving the List Exodus: Gods and Kings, The Penguins of Madagascar

I think Unbroken and Selma will also make 100 million, which will bring this list to 34 films for the year, which will still tie for second place with 2009.

Don't forget The Interview. That might make $100m.

So NATM3, ITW, Unbroken AS, TIG and Selma will likely all do it. That would be record equalling 35 movies. If The Interview would have stayed we could have seen a new record.
