Lucy uses her brainpower to get past 100 million.

$100 Million movies of 2014
Rank - Movie - Number of days to reach the mark - Date on which they reached the mark
1. Ride Along - 23 - February 8
2. The LEGO Movie - 9 - February 15
3. 300: Rise of an Empire - 24 - March 30
4. Divergent - 14 - April 3
5. Mr. Peabody and Sherman - 30 - April 5
6. Captain America: The Winter Soldier - 4 - April 7
7. Rio 2 - 22 - May 2
8. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - 5 - May 6
9. Noah - 48 - May 14
10. Godzilla (2014) - 4 - May 19
11. Neighbors - 15 - May 23
12. X-Men: Days of Future Past - 4 - May 26
13. Maleficent - 8 - June 6
14. 22 Jump Street - 9 - June 21
15. The Fault in Our Stars -18 - June 23
16. How To Train Your Dragon 2 - 12 - June 24
17. Transformers: Age of Extinction - 3 - June 29
18. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - 7 - July 17
19. Guardians of the Galaxy- 4 - August 4
20. Lucy- 19 - August 12

Lucy opened far higher than expected and then held on well for a film so dividedly received. The fact that it will outgross Salt, which starred Angelina Jolie, is absolutely insane.

Upcoming Films Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Edge of Tomorrow

Leaving the List Into the Storm

Ninja Turtles shred their way past 100 million.

$100 Million movies of 2014

1. Ride Along - 23 - February 8
2. The LEGO Movie - 9 - February 15

10. Godzilla (2014) - 4 - May 19
11. Neighbors - 15 - May 23
12. X-Men: Days of Future Past - 4 - May 26

19. Guardians of the Galaxy- 4 - August 4
20. Lucy- 19 - August 12
21. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles- 9 -August 16

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles becomes a much needed franchise starter for Paramount, blazing past anyone's reasonable expectations. While it probably won't be a 200 million hit, 180 million looks like a reasonable goal

Upcoming films on this list Edge of Tomorrow, The Equalizer

Leaving this list Let's Be Cops, The Expendables 3

Edge of Tomorrow will be the last film of the summer to join this list this weekend. Hopefully Warner Bros. will report its number soon.

Edge of tomorrow finally goes over the edge of 100 million

$100 Million movies of 2014
Rank - Movie - Number of days to reach the mark - Date on which they reached the mark
1. Ride Along - 23 - February 8
2. The LEGO Movie - 9 - February 15

9. Noah - 48 - May 14
10. Godzilla (2014) - 4 - May 19
11. Neighbors - 15 - May 23
12. X-Men: Days of Future Past - 4 - May 26
13. Maleficent - 8 - June 6
14. 22 Jump Street - 9 - June 21

21. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles- 9 -August 16
22. Edge of Tomorrow- 84 -August 28

After an underwhelming opening, Edge of Tomorrow wound up holding well throughout it s run and ending with over 100 million. It is tom Cruise's first original 100 million movie in nearly ten years. If it weren't for that budget, I wouldn't have been surprised by a sequel.

Upcoming Movies- I think the Equalizer has a good chance. Gone Girl is certain though.

2004 was his last original $100m grosser with Collateral. So that is exactly 10 years. War of the Worlds is not an original movie by any means.

I am glad it reached that milestone, though. Well deserved.

Looks like Equalizer is pretty much a lock unless it has a HUGE second weekend drop.

The Maze runner also has a chance, but it is not guaranteed. I'd say it is about a 50% chance.

In the post-summer marketplace, The Equalizer opening to just $34m is definitely not a lock for $100m.

Equalizer and Maze Runner are solid chances but yeah the poor Sep/Oct weekdays do hamper a film's legs so certainly no locks.

I guess its Gone Girl next followed by Big Hero, Interstellar, Catching Fire, Penguins and HB2. Add in Hobbit, Exodus and Museum from December and that locks in around 31 $100m grossers for the year. There will then likely be a few surprise performers and awards films that catch on for this year to make a run at the 35 film record from 2013 but it will be tight.

22. Edge of Tomorrow- 84 -August 28
23. Gone Girl- 16 - October 18

After a very solid opening, Gone Girl became the film everyone was talking about and had stellar holds in its first two weekends. With no real competition in the next couple of weeks and a likely handful of Oscar nominations, 150 million seems like a reasonable total at this point.

Upcoming Films The Maze Runner, The Equalizer
Leaving the List Annabelle

Moviegoers are satisfied with Big Hero 6's care enough to push it to 100 million in 9 days. The Maze Runner navigates its way into the 100 million club.

23. Gone Girl- 16 - October 18
24. Big Hero 6- 9 - November 15
25. The Maze Runner- 59 - November 16

While it couldn't match Frozen, Big Hero 6 is still the second fastest grossing Disney animated film ever. While it likely won't match the legs of The Lion King, it is likely it will out gross Tangled and Aladdin to become the 3rd biggest Disney Animation film ever at the box office (though obviously way lower when adjusting for inflation.) The Maze Runner defied all odds: it broke out in the sea of YA adaptations, even more impressive when you think about the non-popularity of the source material. It also held far better than any of the Hunger Games, Twilight or Harry Potter pictures outside of the first two. It is a real hit and a new franchise in the making for Fox.

Upcoming Films Interstellar, The Equalizer

Leaving the List The Judge, Fury

Note- The estimates are so close, this post may need to be adjusted to correctly signify the number of days for both new additions.

The Maze Runner is probably one of the biggest box office stories of the year. I'd never have thought it would make $100m. It totally looked like another City of Bones or Beautiful Creatures.

The Maze Runner numbers are too close for it to be sure it will get $100m on Sunday that's the reason you should always wait till actuals.

2014 is on pace to match 30+ movies above $100m mark but it is not yet certain if it will get to the 35 movies record of last year.

With Interstellar and Equaliser it will be @ 27.

Then add in : Catching Fire, Dumb and Dumber 2, Horrible Bosses 2, Penguins and it should be at 31 by the end of November.

December should bring on Hobbit, Exodus, one of NATM3/Annie, one of Into the Woods/Unbroken/The Interview) + at least one other Oscar hopefuls/ January expander.

Conservatively we are looking at at-least 35-37 titles.

D&D2 is not a guarantee even with a big opening. Horrible Bosses 2 is also not a lock for $100m, the first one had good WOM but it also had the novelty factor which this one does not have. If you look at how comedy sequels perform then generally then do drop which could lead to HB2 missing $100m. So you are not being conservative there :P

In that list if you take out one/two movies we can easily slip from 35 to 33. So there is a good chance 2014 can miss the 35 movies mark but I do agree there is a good chance we see a new record or a touchdown of 35 movies again.

Films I think will definitely get there.
Interstellar
Penguins
Exodus
Hobbit
NATM
Into the Woods
Films that are likely
Dumb and Dumber To
Horrible Bosses 2
Annie
Unbroken
The Interview
Long shots
Selma
American Sniper

One or two of these will definitely miss, so it will be close nonetheless.
