Fire with Fire

Despite it's terrible Steven Seagal-esque title, this is actually no worse than most of the movies that go to cinemas, so I have no idea why this didn't either. I mean, it's cast is pretty well known; Bruce Willis, Josh Duhamel (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen), Rosario Dawson, Vinnie Jones, 50 Cent, Julian McMahon (Nip/Tuck), and B.A. Baracus from The A-Team film adaptation. Besides Bruce, they're not huge names, but all together they should make this viable enough to play in cinemas. Much worse has played in cinemas and with less star power too. Vincent D'Onofrio is also in it as the crime boss, David Hagan. It's a fine story, but it falls victim to a generic finale (well, pretty much it's all generic but the finale could have rescued it if it were a little more original).

Curtis Jackson (50 Cent), as he's now known, produced it and gave himself a little cameo. On the whole the acting is bad and the lead star is kind of boring. Bruce is a cop investigating in Palm Beach while most of the action happens elsewhere in Palm Beach or in New Orleans, so he's technically 5th or 6th billed in terms of screen time, but he obviously takes 2nd billing because of his relative star power. This is probably the only reason it didn't get released in cinemas; not enough Bruce to warrant it being a "Bruce Willis movie".

I'm working my way through Bruce Willis' DTV movies. Only Lay the Favourite and Catch .44 remaining.

It's an ok film, but really nothing special. The idea behind the movie is more likeable than anything in the movie itself, which was pretty much a waste of my time. There's one good shot in the movie and it's a drawing of the supposed "Tall Man". Jessica Biel tried her best, bless her, but she's just not interesting enough to draw you in.

Not a bad film, but not a great one either. The start is good, and the middle, but the ending is a let down. But I do enjoy these types of movies, especially if they are filmed well, but this is just a generic thriller - no wonder it went straight to DVD. But I love Costner. I just really enjoy watching him in movies. He's great here. The daughter too, Ivana Baquero, you might know her from Pan's Labyrinth, she is probably the most photogenic girl in any movie. She's gorgeous, and will grow up to be a true beauty. I hope she doesn't stray too far from good movies, but it looks like she might be heading for smutty stuff by the looks of her upcoming resume. She's in a film called The Red Virgin. That can't be good.

Anyway, this movie needed more money shots. Most of the finale is shot underground and so there is no light, and it's not suspenseful to make up for it. The creatures don't get shown, well, once or twice, but it's not enough, and the movie ends suddenly without knowing what happened. I don't think it's a horror, more of a supernatural thriller, needless to say that it doesn't scare (or thrill really). Probably best to watch this movie if you're a fan of Kevin Costner, if not, then there's not much here for you.

I'd seen the DVD cover on some sites, but it didn't interest me until I saw I could view it for free on pps. I like watching movies that aren't blockbusters or Oscar contenders or movies that have had any type of general theatrical release. You can find some real gems.

I think it's anti-musical folks and people who felt better caliber of films deserved BP that year. Maybe so, but it was still a wonderful musical adaptation with excellent performances and Singing.

Angel of Death - A

I caught this on Crackle yesterday. It was playing in 8 minute segments which was a bit annoying because Crackle sticks stupid ads you can't avoid and their dumb intro.

As for the film, I thought it was pretty interesting with excellent action sequences. The A is mainly for the action sequences and the lead.

Ricky Gervais Live: Animals

Not a movie, but I watched Ricky Gervais' first stand-up show this evening, and it was funny as hell. I've seen it so many times, but it's still incredibly witty, and I can't control myself, I just roll around in fits of laughter. The man is a comical genious.

An engrossing film that keeps the suspense and mood/fear of the IRA throughout. Unlike most mafia movies made in the USA, Shadow Dancer keeps alive the idea that at any moment you could be struck down by the feared Irish militant group. There are no "rules" per say, and you feel it here. It really gives you a taster of what it's like to live in Northern Ireland in the mid-90s.

The choice of shots here is exceptional and I absolutely adored the cinematography. It's the sort of movie that you can tell is an independently produced film, but the fine-tuned attention to detail from the director and editors can be seen a mile away. The music is also extremely important here in keeping the suspense, so well done to whomever did the music. It's a riveting film that never takes its foot off the gas [although it never reaches fifth gear].

Everybody gives satisfactory performances, and the film could have done with some thrilling moments of action to make it a really good thriller, but overall I enjoyed my time watching it, and Clive Owen is just so watchable that it makes it a pleasure to watch it anyway.

Being only the second US film to be filmed on location in Russia (Red Heat was the first), The Russia House becomes the movie that Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy wanted to be. Connery has an energy about him that Gary Oldman just couldn't match - probably due to the fact that he underplayed the character. The Russia House is not energetic, but it's an intelligent operetta of boardroom espionage, and I enjoyed it a hell of a lot more than Tinker.

There were definitely some better films up for the gold that year.

Anyway, I just watched another music-centric film:

Quadrophenia - First time seeing it, and I really liked it. The band's music/imagery is really well-implemented into the film, never overbearing or crowding out the central dramedy. Also gotta love young Timothy Spall and Sting's Louie Louie dance. A-

Enemies Closer

Van Damme is at least watchable, but the whole feel of this movie is low budget. Some of the violence (gore) is commendable for such a crap story and film. Once again, Kristopher Van Varenberg can only get work due to his father's influence, and he again is absolutely terrible. Perhaps the Van Damme household should give up on trying to make him a star, or even an actor, because he's not got any desire or talent and is truly awful to watch. The same goes for their daughter, Bianca, but perhaps she could have a failing career in porn instead of sponging off her dad.

Enemies Closer needs a named protagonist, not some moronic TV actor (Tom Everett Scott) who we're told has "military training", and this somehow means he can do EVERYTHING including making traps in the forest and diving (things which I'm pretty sure soldiers in Afghanistan are not trained to do). It's the generalisations like this that make films shit nowadays, and this is no exception.

Maybe I'm being generous, but..

Bad Asses

A pretty bad film. I really wish Danny Trejo would stop this career re-extension he's on, and just quit gracefully. His films are just awful. They are not semi-cool anymore like they were back within the first 10 minutes of Machete. Danny Glover is pretty mediocre here too. The story is crap; basically a revenge story, but it's wasted. There is an opportunity for some good scenes, but the pacing and unwillingness to push the boat out like Rodriguez does means we get a stock-filled feature that nobody will care about.

Oh yeah, and 70-year old Trejo becoming 47-year old stunner Jacqueline Obradors' boyfriend is just wrong. But what's weirder is 67-year old Glover being an object of attraction for the perfect, bikini-clad supermodel, Sarah Dumont (who is about 25-years old). It's just stupid.

13 Sins

While the plot is illogical and makes no sense, I had a lot of fun with this film. The acting isn't great, and there is nothing technically impressive, but it's just great to watch and see the decisions being made (also whether you'd make the same ones). The ending is the most stupid thing ever. I mean, you have $5.7m and a cleared record, why would you shoot Ron Perlman and lose it all....just to somehow "put things right" in your mind or try and fix the world, or even to avenge the death of your mum, brother, and father. It still make no sense...they're already dead, you might as well take the millions and enjoy it with the love of your life and live happily ever after. Now, his family members and all the people he was responsible for killing, they all died for nothing, no gain at all.

For a low-budget thriller, it's well made and the story is interesting, that's all I expect.

In A World... Not sure how most would describe this movie but to me it is essentially a romantic comedy. Everything revolving around the protagonist was strong and fun. However, a subplot involving her sister was not needed and jarring when it played out. Also it probes subtracted scree time from the charismatic lead. Excited to see what Lake Bell does next. (Is it just me, or did this review sound like Leonard Maltin?)

I would have preferred if the characters had been more normal and relatable. Maureen was probably the most normal character.

Gleefully stupid, well made, probably the second best in the series behind Tokyo Drift.

I watch this every few years. It's one of those great 90s thrillers cut from the same cloth as Single White Female or Sliver or Sleeping with the Enemy. It's just a real thriller, with a great twist, and solid performances by all. I always forget that it also stars a young Gwyneth Paltrow.
