 Re: Germany Box-Office Thread
And guess what, most of these suprise blockbusters are in 2D...
Compare the ten biggest movies of the last three years:
3 of the Top Ten 2014 in Germany are in 3D compared to 7 in the USA 3 of the Top Ten 2013 in Germany are in 3D compared to 8 in the USA 3 of the Top Ten 2012 in Germany are in 3D compared to 5 in the USA
Since 2010 only 9 of the 26 blockbusters (3m admissions) were 3D movies..

 Re: Germany Box-Office Thread
I guess the studios still dont care because the 3D premium makes up for the missing admissions.

A heatwave is crippling German box office, most movies will drop around 70 % and this weekend will be the worst in 2 years...

 Re: Germany Box-Office Thread
I don't get German people/audiences. I mean I understand how this works. Like, right now, when I ask friends to go see a movie the response is usually: "Nah, it's so nice outside, let's do something outside".
Now I get that completely in years when after 5 months of cool weather and rain, there are finally some wonderful weekends (I think it was like this in 2010 and 2012). But this year, the weather has been pretty nice all along. We had warm/sunny stretches every single month and yet every time the sun is out and it is hot, people treat it like it's the last time ever.

Yeah, I gotta say I was always perplexed by the whole "nice weather = bad box office" effect that many European posters would talk about. Coming from an American perspective that feels like such a foreign concept... which I guess would be the case by definition lol.

It's totally understandable for me. When the weather is nice, you don't want to sit inside and watch a film. When the weather is nice, you want to go and enjoy it.

So if the weather is nice for most of the time, you just don't go to films?

I'm not "general audience". My particular pastime is to stay in and watch a good movie. But I understand that most other people do not think that way. The point is that in Europe, especially the UK, the weather is not nice for most of the time, so people like to enjoy it when it arrives.

In Asia, it's always hot so it's nice to go watch a movie. On rainy days, I'm not sure if attendance increases or not, there are a decent amount of people who stay in because the traffic is terrible.

 Re: Germany Box-Office Thread
The US gets a lot more hot/sunny weather than a lot of Europe too, so it makes sense that it doesn't have as big an effect there. Here, if it's around 75 degrees or higher, people seem hellbent on doing All The Things outside.
Films had good drops here last weekend (even X-Men), but with the weather we've had over the past few days I expect the numbers to take a nosedive.

Long periods of nice weather just mean that people are enjoying the great outdoors from longer than other years. Humans are outdoorsy people. They're not made to sit in and watch films. Watching films, much like playing games, are for when going outside isn't an option.

 Re: Germany Box-Office Thread
Mark and Lecter, I wonder if you could clarify something for me. On IMDB, it states that Rambo III was released on 14th July, 1988 in West Germany. However, on the box office page, it states that it made:
DEM 6,685,239 (West Germany) (27 July 1988) (382 Screens)
This is the gross for the 21-27 week, plus the total gross on the 27th. So, was it released on 14th or 21st July?

 Re: Germany Box-Office Thread
Thanks for your reply. So it was released on 21st July? Can you just confirm that I've read your site correctly, is 14th July (as stated on IMDB) incorrect?
Could it perhaps have had a preview weekend on 14th July? I'm just trying to get to the bottom of why IMDB states it as had opened on 14th July..

 Re: Germany Box-Office Thread
It's funny...I tried to get to the bottom of this and I have found several German websites stating a July 14th release and several others a July 21st release. I'd trust Mark over everything, though.

 Re: Germany Box-Office Thread
Up to the mid-90s it was quiet common that major movies had previews the weekend before - always Friday and/or Saturday late shows (between 10pm-12pm). But I do not remember if Rambo III had any - and if R3 had any, the first preview would have been on Friday the 15th... (not July 14th) And sometimes IMDB and other sources list the premiere date not the release date... (But I do not remember if there was a German premiere)

mark66 wrote: http://www.insidekino.com/DTop10/DTopJuli1988.htm I absolutely adore this page, but do you have it for other months besides Nov '87-Feb '89? I mean, German is not too hard to understand, but I find your site quite hard to navigate. I don't even know how to get to that section if I landed on the homepage.

It's ok, I found it eventually. I see there are many missing months until around 1992.

 Re: Germany Box-Office Thread
Isn't there anywhere that has these admissions listed as Deutsche Mark? I know that DEM grosses were recorded for films in the 80s and 90s, but I only see admissions listed on insidekino.de..

Continental Europe prefers admissions - it's the Anglo-American countries who believe in "money"... ;-)
