 Re: Godzilla (2014)
The way the Hiroshima reference plays out is particularly bad.
Ken Watanabe: Want to see my fancy watch apropos of nothing? David Strathairn: Good sir, this watch has stopped! Ken Watanabe: Yes! It stopped on... August 6th, 1945. David Strathairn: *shits himself* HIROSHIMA!
One can sense the writers are so proud of themselves, assured they have dealt with the political and social dimension of Godzilla's place in culture.

so basically, support Godzilla if you support cock blocking and baby killing. I certainly support baby killing.

Baby killing jokes are actually the best jokes. So if you don't support baby killing, you're against humor and happiness.

If you don't support baby killing you also can't give women orgasms.
Do you really want to be that guy who doesn't want to kill babies, can't give a girl an orgasm, and doesn't like GODZILLA?
Don't be that guy.

 Re: Godzilla (2014)
This was pretty great. I don't get the Godzilla isn't in it enough complaints. So he's not in it the entire movie but the teasing is done so well that the final payoff is glorious and insane. The story was solid enough for what was occurring and I enjoyed that it centered on those affected as the events were occurring instead of constantly having to refer to media coverage. I do wish the female cast was utilized a bit more here.

Yes, more of Elizabeth Olsen would've been appreciated.

 Re: Godzilla (2014)
Whole lotta dumb in this thread. How the hell hasn't Spielberg's name come up outside of Dil, and David mentioning War of the Worlds? Godzilla makes me think Edwards is the heir apparent to Spielberg and not J.J.. He's clearly a big fan, and he too made one hell of an entertaining film. AND, those complaining about there not being enough Godzilla in Godzilla, you must think Jaws is the most boring fucking piece of shit ever made. You only see him head on for what, five minutes? The rest is just some fucking fin? Fucking cocktease. The only thing Godzilla needed was a little more Cranston. Edwards could've had more Cranston and then done the Spielberg father abandonment issue thing. Godzilla's the best disaster film since Independence Day. If the characters had been fleshed out a little bit more, this could've been a classic. As it stands, it'll just have to settle for being pretty damn good. And anyone who thinks the 98 version even stands close to this one, do yourself a favor and go back and watch it. Just try to get through the first 45 minutes. (A)And even though I'm a fan of Man of Steel, I like how Edwards pretty much put Godzilla in the same place as Superman by the end of the film. What's it say on the TV at the end, "King of the Monsters...City's Hero?"? Then they both go off and hide.

On the other hand, Godzilla without Godzilla is nothing.

 Re: Godzilla (2014)
LOL,
Jaws wasn't shown because of budget restraints and technical reasons. And they worked around it, and it worked amazingly because it had never been seen before.
Godzilla is shown, then not, then not, then not. Then wait.. Nope door closes, then not, then not, then yes this is awesome Then not Then he jumps in the sea The End because of lazy screenwriting? A 160 million budget being too small, when the director made a more effective monster movie on a shoe string budget.
Godzilla without Godzilla is ATJ and Elizabeth Olsen awing at the screen like they've never seen a camera before.

 Re: Godzilla (2014)
GODZILLA
#1. 1998 Godzilla isn't even Godzilla so strike that from your memories.
Godzilla was my most anticipated film this summer and it unfortunately kind of let me down but gave me satisfaction as well. We know that it will get a sequel which will hopefully correct the major issue in this film. In this film, what hurts it most is the overabundance of human characters where an attempt to build some emotional connection is forced upon us. I did enjoy Cranston and Binoche and could have tolerated ATJ alot more if it were left at that. Instead we get this family dynamic with Olsen and child which was flat, boring and a waste of time for her (acting wise) and the viewer. It was such a distraction and break in the flow of the film everytime it cut to one of them. Watanabe was okay but the other female of note Hawkins was a total waste as well. It's like they hired these actors for the sake of filling space. Like there was a quota that had to be met. Now what did work and fantastically so was anything involving Godzilla and the MUTOS. Godzilla was fully realized here and the sound was perfect. I like how he's just this lumbering beast come out of nowhere to set balance to the earth out of instinct. He's this ancient protector of sorts and the earth is his domain. The action between the creatures was exciting and the EMP power of the MUTOS was a cool touch as well. After the first viewing I kind of felt there wasn't enough Godzilla and too much teasing and cutting away from action early on but maybe they had just the right amount. If you have an hour of Godzilla fighting that would get old fast but for the amount given in the film I was greatly satisfied. I look forward to #2 and hope they can reign in the human character count and keep it more focused on 1-2 characters plus Godzilla next time.
Grade - B
